Figure it's time to fire up this thread for the upcoming season as well. The baseball team opens up the following weekend with a 4-game series at Oregon starting on Friday the 17th.
Season tickets are going for $35 this year; there's also a complimentary admission game when they play against Northern Illinois at Prasco Park on Friday, March 31 at 5 PM. The Musketeers were picked to finish 3rd in the Big East behind UConn and Creighton; Georgetown was picked 4th.
I believe this is also the final year that the Big East Tournament is committed to Prasco Park; not sure what their future plans are after this season. I imagine UConn is going to make a push to have that tournament played in Hartford at some point.

No real Southern swing. 12 games on the Left Coast which should be fun time in SoCal.
And Wofford goes to Hayden field.

They originally had a West Coast trip scheduled in 2020 until Covid interrupted those plans.
The road starts at UC-Santa Barbara with a single game at Cal Poly and finishes with a series at Saint Mary's.
As for Wofford, I'd expect most Xavier fans to be preoccupied with another team that weekend.

I get the sense that Xavier's pitching is still going to be an issue this year.

Their pitching at Oregon was decent at times, but the bats failed them during the 4-game sweep.
Not surprised they're losing home run derby games at this stage.

It appears our pitching is a dumpster fire again.
There are 18 pitchers listed on the roster. 9 of them are Seniors or Grads.
Can they really be this bad on the mound?
Edit. Luke Bell got shelled, and Bosacker gave up 3 runs in one inning.
Need a quality closer. Hope we can find one.

Pretty good day for Xavier's midweek pitchers. Beat NKU 5-3, and they're obviously capable of being explosive. 4 game win streak for the good guys as they get back on the plane to the Left Coast. UC Santa Barbara for three this weekend, then one at Cal Poly followed by 4 at St. Mary's the following weekend. Sounds like a fun spring break!

A question for Band and Go since you guys follow this team more than anyone.
Are most of these kids on this team Billy O recruits or are there some left over from Googins?
This is a pretty damn good team and if Billy is recruiting them, we are set for a good long time.

I follow the scores but not the roster movements, etc. that closely. But Googs has been gone since before Covid (he was from the before time!), so you can safely assume this is Billy O's team.

Baseball America has Xavier as the 2nd team out in its latest NCAA Tournament projection. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2023-ncaa-tournament-projected-field-of-64-42623/
I think it's pretty safe to say that Xavier has NEVER been in the at-large discussion for the NCAA Baseball Tournament before.

If there are still Googins recruits in Year 6 of the Billy O'Conner regime, there's going to be quite a different discussion.
But as far as the at-large talk, it's the first time in the modern Xavier era that they'd be in the at-large discussion. (There was a season back in the 60s where they were invited but turned it down because of a final exam conflict.)
Now the new Big East did get 2 teams back in 2017 in the field; Xavier won the auto bid and St. John's got an at-large that year.

Also:

3-0 vs. Wofford (#3 seed in the South Carolina regional)
1-2 vs. UC-Santa Barbara (#3 seed in the Stanford regional)
0-1 vs. Louisville (#3 seed in the Indiana regional)

Another tough loss today 3-2. Literally 3 breaks that all went the Pirates way:
1) Line drive in the 8th innings lands a couple inches fair and scores the go-ahead run on an RBI double;
2) Deep fly by DeMartino that was caught by the CF robbing him of a home run (would have put X up 4-3);
3) Line drive caught by the 3rd baseman in the 9th that would have tied the game.
Xavier has only had 5 hits in the first 2 games against the Pirates. Not good.

They did salvage this weekend with an 8-7 win. After a grand slam by Jared Cushing in the 3rd inning to give X a 5-2 lead, both teams were tied on 3 separate occasions. Turns out Xavier and Seton Hall were the only teams not to be affected by weather this weekend. UConn won 2 games at Villanova but couldn't get a third one in today because of rain. Georgetown split a pair of games with St. John's; they also couldn't get in a game today in DC. (Games will not be made up).
Butler and Creighton had a pair of rain delays today, but Creighton did win in extra innings to get the 3-game sweep. Going into next weekend where Xavier travels to Creighton, here are the standings:
Creighton 9-3 (+2.0 GA)
UConn 8-3 (+1.5 GA)
Xavier 8-4 (+1.0 GA)
Seton Hall 7-5 (0.0 GB)
Georgetown 7-7 (-1.0 GB)
Villanova 5-9 (-3.0 GB)
St. John's 3-8 (-3.5 GB)

5-1 win today; Xavier finishes road play in the Big East at 8-1. Seton Hall finished a sweep of Creighton today, so the Pirates are now a game ahead of the Jays for the #3 seed next week. In fact, the only reason Creighton would make the field as of today is because Georgetown couldn't get their 3rd game with St. John's in b/c of a rainout.
We'll know later today whether or not Xavier will be a half game behind UConn or 1.5 GB; they're leading Butler 8-7 in the 6th. Creighton finishes at home against UConn, so there's still a chance X could get the Big East regular season championship.

Garrett Schultz returned to the lineup today after missing 6 weeks with an injury relating to a line drive against Miami. He went 2-4 with a walk, so having his bat back in the lineup only makes the offense even more potent.

I think they're just short of that. RPI is VERY respectable, but I don't think a Big East team gets an at-large bid with Xavier's profile. They're so close that they may be two wins over UC away from getting in, which would hurt.
3-13 against Quad 1 opponents doesn't help.

It seems as if Billy lined up his pitching to be the best rotation for the Big East games. I know they need games to stay sharp between weekends, but I’m not a fan of sorta big Non Con games after the League season starts. I think they really don’t help, but I could be wrong.

Winning the Big East regular season crown would be a huge ace in the hole on their profile. Having a nice road record will help, but their record against Q1 is going to be a minus.

Xavier is in a much better position to win the conference tournament this year; the starting pitching is much improved. Depending on the matchups in the opening round, they have two aces in Ethan Bosacker (RHP) and Brent Alazaus (LHP). They are both capable of long outings which is huge in a conference tournament setting. Luke Hoskins has evolved into a nice #3 starter and already has wins in the bag against teams like Creighton and St. John's (along with Ohio State in the noncon). Luke Bell is the #4 starter that can go long if need be.
UConn has the best overall offensive lineup in the Big East, but their pitching has been very questionable of late. They've got a couple of studs in their bullpen, but they're in trouble if they have to burn them early in the tournament.
Seton Hall is the one team I get nervous about matching up with, but they are not unbeatable.

I don’t know, man. A 4.63 ERA for Hoskins and a 7.00 plus run ERA for Bell doesn’t make me very comfortable. Especially how UConn can mash.

Clay Schwaner looked like he was struggling early in the bottom of the 9th as well, but UConn was foolish enough to try to steal off of him and ended up short-circuiting any chance they had of putting together a rally. If you're talking about the top two guys in the bullpen, Justin Loer only faced 2 batters on Wednesday and Jonathan Kelly faced 1 batter last night. They are ready in case either Hoskins or Bell has to leave the game early.
And as for UConn, keep in mind they were fortunate to get by Georgetown in their opener. They can rake but their pitching has a lot of question marks right now. Their best pitcher from last year is unavailable due to injury and even last night a reliever had to leave the game in the midst of a 3-0 count. They are more than capable of winning 3 straight games but it's not going to be easy.

Last night COULD have been a bullpen game - Hoskins was getting a little "just in case" work in from the 2nd through the 4th inning; Jonathan Kelly was keeping warm from the 5th inning on until he was finally called in the bottom of the 8th.
That said, the odds of Hoskins at least getting into the 5th or 6th inning are a lot higher than Luke Bell; he's been more relegated to weekday starter of late. Would love to see Georgetown pull the upset today; I can't imagine they have pitching depth to get 3 wins in 2 days.

"Xavier all of a sudden is now on the right side of the bubble as a projected three-seed and while a Big East championship would clinch an NCAA Tournament berth for the Musketeers, they can feel pretty good about their resume thanks to their 36 wins, top-50 RPI and a non-conference strength of schedule of 57."

I would leave nothing to chance tomorrow. I just feel fortunate that UConn used their one-time ace against Georgetown instead of against Xavier.

I just have a feeling that this will be a “bullpen game” not named a bullpen game.
Unfortunately Xavier’s pitching is proving out my fears. 3 pitchers. Down 5-3 after 6.
C’mon bats, get hot.

Was there ever a doubt? Housinger showed why he was MVP for the tournament.
Could have also had Alazaus named co-MVP; he helped keep the UConn bats quiet at the beginning when Xavier was getting handcuffed at the plate by UConn's bullpen lefty.

And now we wait to see if Xavier gets to go to the Lexington regional (where they've already played UK this year) or travel elsewhere.
UConn will likely go up north to the BC/Brighton regional.

Here were some notable points during today's doubleheader (btw Big East, how did today's games not end up on FS2?):
Game 1:
UConn got runs in each of the first 3 innings, but Xavier was able to get Nick Boyle out of the bullpen to induce a double play in the 4th inning when UConn loaded the bases and threatened to blow the game open early. X tied it in the 5th, but UConn would get runners at 2nd and 3rd the following inning and scored 2 runs on a botched pickoff attempt by DuPrey throwing towards 3rd base. Ben Huber (aka Albino Rhino) hit a solo homerun an inning later and pretty much sealed that game.
Game 2:
Xavier got a 1st-inning run but was running in quicksand when UConn brought Garrett Coe out of the bullpen. Coe was the same guy that shut down X in last year's championship game as well; he outlasted Alazaus before exiting in the 8th inning. Xavier managed to get a run across in the 7th and had the bases loaded with 1 out, but Andrew Walker lined out to the pitcher and led to a 1-4 double play. UConn hit back-to-back doubles in the 7th to take the 3-2 lead going into the 9th.
From there, their closer promptly hit Hendrickson and walked Stephenson - that led to Housinger's 2-run triple in the top of the 9th. A DuPrey sac fly extended the lead to 5-3 and Xavier tacked on two more runs after Willis and the following two UConn pitchers lost their command.
Justin Loer had one tough inning in the 7th, but he otherwise slammed the door and Xavier wins their 4th Big East title in 10 years. UConn had multiple opportunities to break the game open, but couldn't get many hits with runners in scoring position. They did hit 2 homeruns today, but both were bases-empty deals.

D1 Baseball (which projected Xavier OUT with a loss to UConn in the late game) indeed has the Muskies traveling to Lexington as a #3 seed. Kentucky is rated 13th of the 16 hosts, so it's a good draw. Geographically, there's also a chance Xavier gets sent to Terre Haute, where Indiana State might be host 16 of 16. That would be the dream.

Pretty amazing 9th inning comeback. John Fanta called Jack Housinger “Mr. Xavier”.

We could end up seeing the Trees in Lexington should they not get selected as a regional host. They did win the Missouri Valley auto-bid, so that chance is still alive for them.
And Go, what happened to Louisville this year? Noticed they didn't even qualify for the 12-team ACC Tournament.

Indiana State will get to host a regional; the other non-Power 5 host will be Coastal Carolina.
As for UConn, their road got harder by virtue of Boston College not getting to host a regional.

If I'm reading the XU Sport page correctly, after the men finish baseball, there is a dry period until August for any sports.
Hope the men can keep it going for a while !
