View Full Version : What will we see from Hunter as a starter

- Don’t see a big difference in offense in terms of strategy. Except for greenish light Free got from 3. Missing overall offensive production.
- Hunter is a great finisher at the rim this year. Not sure he’ll be as effective 5-8 feet away.
- Free better defensive rebounder. Could be a push on offensive side.
- Better at the line.
- Better defender.
Just a few thoughts.

If he can stay out of foul trouble. Definitely a better overall defender. Gotta stay in his role, although I expect the oppo to treat him like we did with the guy from UConn- Jackson. Just drop down and pack low and make him prove he can shoot past 15 feet

As long as you surround him with capable shooters, it's not a huge concern.
We wouldn't beat UConn again using that strategy.
Hunter just needs to continue to play his game and he will be fine.

Agreed.
The key will to play Hunter and Claude together as least amount of mins as possible imo. Hard to run an effective offense when 2 out of 5 defenders don't need to guard their man at or outside the 3 point line.

The offense has been rather stagnant when those two are on the floor together.

My biggest concern is what happens when Nunge is off the floor. A lineup of Hunter and 4 guards is going to be at a serious disadvantage against most other schools when it comes to rebounding and defense. Edwards or Miles are going to need to step up big time at that point and give X something on the boards, especially defensive rebounding. Otherwise teams are going to play volleyball and rack up some serious offensive rebounding numbers during those periods.

Even before Free's injury X's guards have been beaten over & over again. How many times in the last 6-8 games have we seen opposing players make it to the basket unguarded? Hunter needs to stay out of foul trouble; that means not trying to "help out" on these drives. Sean will have his hands full in February!

Yeah Colby is going to really need to help with rebounding, which he is more than capable. If Nunge is out the other team has to adjust as well. So for example could go with Boum, Kunkel, Claude, Jones and Hunter and the opposing team wouldn’t want to stay big at that point. It will get figured out.

Avoid the stupid ticky tack fouls will be really important We need 30+ minutes out of him.
Stick to what you are good at and dont try to do too much.
Better D will be a positive move in the +/- direction for the team
If he can score 10-12 and grab 8 rebounds thats huge

Xavier needs to come out in the make shots offense and get out to a big lead.
From there, they need to avoid taking fucked up shots the rest of the game.
If we can manage to score more points than PC tonight, I like our chances to pull out a W.

How many of you said “Hunter just faked that cramp” I think I may have been the only one. He missed 5 free throws in a row I believe. He then gets fouled at crunch time and ends up worth a cramp. I’m going Alex Jones here and calling it fake cramp. What do you think?

I said to Mother Cooley XU’81, “I can see the charley horse.”
She replied, “I saw it, too.”
Who am I supposed to believe? OTR or my lyin’ eyes?

I didn’t know you could see cramps. My buddy who set close to the floor said he could see a bulge in his calf. Is that true? You can see cramps? I know you can hear them once a month from the wives.

You can see a charlie horse.
Hunter was great at everything that did not involve shooting outside 2 feet from the basket.

Props to Hunter...again.
I'll forgive the free throws because of his defensive performance. Not to mention 7 offensive boards. Literally the difference between winning and losing.
Let's not say "he's come so far from last year" - it wasn't his fault. He can play.

You’ve never had a calf muscle cramp up? C’mon man. Hurts like hell, and yes the muscles just pop out and are so tense that it is easy to see.

Defensive play was UNbelievable against Hopkins. Only 3 made FGs in 45 minutes!

Why Nuts is not, or never has been, a Major College Basketball Coach after his stellar career as a Student Manager, is a question that only the Gods can know!

My arm cramped up on that 3 pointer from the corner at the buzzer just as the guy let it go for Providence I am sure glad he missed otherwise that pain would have been for naught.

Does anybody else think that Hunter has a shot at the NBA? His improvement in most of his game has been nothing short of amazing.
It's been a couple of years, but it seems to me that Hunter 2.0 is playing better than Naji - and he's having a decent career in the NBA. At this point, there's a good chance that Colby, Nunge and Free will/could be gone next year, which means Hunter will likely be a starter (assuming he comes back), and could very well be "the man" in the front court. With another year under Miller's tutelage, Hunter could progress into Hunter 3.0.
Thoughts?

In no way is he playing better than Naji. I wasn’t a huge Naji fan but acknowledged he showed incredible flashes. At this point, I feel bad Steele was his coach. I didn’t think he had the bball IQ nor the handles to play in the nba. IQ could’ve been on Steele, too. Credit to him- but he was far more gifted and athletic than hunter.

He's not tall enough to suck at shooting and play in the NBA.
Does anyone have a count for who we have in the NBA now? I like that our count should go up with Sean developing these guys and recruiting “his” guys.

Current guys?
Naji and Sumner
Would be great for Xavier for Colby to be a 1st round pick and/or stick in the league.

During that same period Larry Sykes and Michael Hawkins had cups of coffee in the league.

But if Olsingledigit is right, there would have been a window around 1999-2002 where Xavier had Hill, Strong, Grant, Williams and Posey all in the NBA at the same time. So it looks like 5 would have been the most Xavier players at one time.

I had to look it up, but Reggie was under contract with the Hawks for 18 days in training camp. Butler scored 182 points and grabbed 173 rebounds in 4 years at X.

Yeah, I would have never known he sniffed the NBA. That is pretty amazing.
