View Full Version : What Place Will Xavier End Up In The Big East 2022-23?

You've seen Xavier play. You've seen, heard or read about the other teams in the Big East. You've seen Sean Miller change the team dynamic.

So where do you think they'll finish?

Pick from the 1st to 11th.

I think anywhere from 2-5 is realistic. I think 3-4 is most likely. I will say 3rd.

What he said. If I have to pick, I’ll say 5th.

I went with 3rd.

But would not be surprised with anywhere from 2-6. Team can score but we have 3 glaring issues IMHO.

1. Lack of physical/athletic post players
2. At times our defense just doesn't care about defending
3. Bench development has been virtually nil. Need 3-4 guys to step up and contribute consistently

I’m thinking at best 4th for the reasons you mentioned. Defense is brutal which will probably cost us a couple games we shouldn’t lose along with our weakness in the post.. Would be nice to see Claude continue to grow so Baum can get most of the 2 minutes.

I agree with these. Although I would say we need 2-3 bench guys to step up consistently. A lot of the best teams don't typically go much deeper than 8 anyway. I think if Hunter and Claude can step up consistently off the bench X will be in good shape depth wise.

Occasional contributions from Miles, KyKy, and Craft would be a bonus.

CR8ON-my dark horse 1st place. They lost 2 tough road games in AZ and ASU by a bucket, and they feasted on roast road-kill Hawgs. They are good defenders. As much as I like Boum, they picked up Baylor Scheierman, Summit POY, in portal. I believe they are better-built to win BE.

UCONN-probably most will pick as 1st. A "dangerous" team. Looking at Fla. Gators, X beat them by 7 at home, UConn by 21 on road.

NOVA- They're back. Lost by a bucket at MI State after being down 10 at halftime. They playing well in Dec. beating Oklahoma and pounding Penn and BC.

XU or MARQ, MARQ or XU 4th and 5th. I think it could go either way. MARQ destroyed Baylor and played Purdue tough. That is as impressive as X beating WVa and 1st half UC.

BUTLER, HALL, PROV, ST.J, DEPAUL, GTOWN can battle for the lower tier.

Xavier played FL on neutral court. But yeah, I agree with your overall point that UConn beating them on the road by that much was more impressive than X beating them by only 7 on neutral court.

UCONN is top 6 nationally in both offensive (6th) and defensive (4th) efficiency. They have limited holes, are athletic, are physical, and can beat you in the paint and on the perimeter. IMO, they are significantly better than Creighton (who has lost 5 in a row and has holes) and a bona fide national title contender. They are without a doubt the BE front-runner.

They may be ranked 3 or 4 or whatever they are, but their metrics have them at #1.

They have a freshman 7 footer off the bench that is better than anything X has in their frontcourt. They are really effing good.

Me too. However, then I remember that everything Steele did (or didn't do) led to our reunion with Miller (imo the best coach in Xavier basketball history) and then I feel ok again.

We need to make the Tournament, and I don't think 11-9 in this Big East gets that done. So let's do 12-8 or 13-7 please.

20-0 would be fine, too.

Fourth or fifth in the BE. If that doesn't get us in the NCAA we can blame a lack of defense, a v. weak bench + (at least) two wasted scholly's under the

We really need to make the tournament next year.

There is a legit chance that our top 5 guys from this year are not back next year.

Anything can happen with the portal and Miller as coach but not sure I would be confident that next year will be better.

I will go with fourth place. UConn, obviously, at the top. Until they actually are not, assume Villanova will be near the top. Creighton laid an egg in the non-conference, but all their talent comes together for the conference run.

Lack of depth and defensive deficiencies let two or three winnable games slip away, keeping Xavier from challenging for the top spot.

But I hope the offensive production and clutch players in the starting five is enough to keep pulling off close wins and roadkills.

Xavier is going to have the toughest homestand this week with Creighton and Marquette; they should hold serve but far from a gimme. Meanwhile, Providence gets the midweek bye before beginning a road trip to both Creighton and Marquette. If Xavier sweeps this homestand, there's a decent chance the Musketeers will be on top of the Big East standings for the foreseeable future.

Tough week, but thankfully both games at home. I expect a conference home loss at some point. Creighton is the preseason #1, has the firepower, and can really use a huge win for their resume. Xavier is flying high and maybe overlooks them with their seven losses.

Definitely surprised that UConn was the first of the Big 5 to blink with a home loss. Both Marquette and suddenly UConn have pivotal weeks; the Golden Eagles host Providence and go to Seton Hall. UConn also goes to The Hall and hosts Butler next weekend. Keep in mind Providence already has a win at Seton Hall.

I think Marquette now has the inside track for #1 with road games at Georgetown and DePaul still to come; Xavier can change that with one or two big roadkills this week. UConn did look fantastic today, but that was just as much a byproduct of Butler than it was UConn.

Getting the UConn sweep was huge, but it will be just as vital this week to hold serve against Providence and St. John's. Do not want to be in a must-win situation at Providence late in the season.

Villanova could be a spoiler this week with trips to Marquette and Creighton, but I wouldn't hold my breath based on what I saw today.

UConn has the biggest week with a home game against Marquette and a roadie to Creighton to follow. Seton Hall could get closer to the NCAA bubble should they beat Creighton at home and potentially get a road win at Villanova.

Assuming UConn holds serve against Marquette, Xavier could take sole possession of 1st place with a Friday win at Butler.

Two big games coming up this week to determine who gets to the top - Xavier/Marquette is the big one on Wednesday, but Creighton/Providence on Tuesday night is going to be significant as well. Not very often that the league gets a 1/2 AND a 3/4 matchup in the same week.

So, when we beat Marquette, will there be more of a "That makes up for Butler" mentality, or increased anger/frustration "think where we would be if only beat Buthole and/or if we can beat the Warriors..."

...gladly willing to accept that challenge..

...and my impending reflection session (in hopes that self-imposed sanctions forestall the jack-booted thugs)

Marquette at Creighton is the big one this week. If Marquette wins this, they'll be in the driver's seat for the #1 seed.

Providence also has to go to UConn on Wednesday; Villanova is the potential spoiler with a game at Xavier and at home against Creighton. However, the Wildcats have not beaten anyone in the Top 5 yet.

BE double round robin format makes for interesting tie-breaker procedures. I think it is only used for SEED in tourney. Wouldn't the tied schools be co-champions in regular season and share bragging rights?

Correct.

With Marquette looking like the apparent Big East winner, Xavier would now have an edge over Creighton in a head-to-head tiebreaker by virtue of a 1-1 record against Marquette should they tie in the standings.
