View Full Version : Boum Goes The Dynamite

Ten games in, Souley Boum has entered the pantheon of all-time great transfers to Xavier. All credit to Sean Miller for bringing him to Victory Parkway.
It is hard to imagine what this season would look like without him. His play has been instrumental in so many games so far. It instills a ton of confidence to have his poise and execution at the helm for the rest of the season.

What AMeX said.
The only other transfer that I can think of that had such a major impact was Malcolm Bernard, and his leadership really didn’t display itself until later in the season.
Souley has fit in seamlessly, but that’s what a real coach who knows how to build a team does. How many point guards were in the portal this year? Hundreds I’d guess, but Sean picked the Cherry from the pits. Not only is Souley a great talent, but he’s fearless, a vocal leader and built for the big moments.
What an incredible addition!

yes and he really owns it. I can tell from his mostly very good performances but also from his reaction when things dont go his way. Desmond should shadow this man..it could make his career. Funny he seems a little metholdical in the dribble but gets where he wants to go with strong hand. I wish KyKy would snap out of it..a solid 5-7 min would mean the world to Kunkel-just protect the ball, work to get open, an occasional pull from 3 or drive, and get back and stay in front for 5-7. Kraft is a different player but maybe an option

Yes, but Jordan wasn’t a Leader. A difference maker on sheer talent? Yes. But remember his first 10 games were rough and Mack had to do some aggressive counseling early in that season. Malcolm was a solid quiet leader early on.

Sean said that he's had his eye on Souley ever since he played against Arizona when Sean was their coach. So he knew exactly what he was getting. Seems to be working out well for both Xavier and Souley.

Yeah,
Bernard isn't even close to top 10......he is one guy that has turned into somewhat of a tall tale. Nate Johnson blows him out of the water.
But c'mon guys........STAN KIMBROUGH is at the VERY TOP for just about every reason possible.

I’ll take lavender and his teardrop over any of our transfers every day of the week. Boum could surpass him though with a run in the tourney… Crawford was just dripping with talent but a bit of a head case.
As semaj said though, x has been really good in the transfer market.
I’ll add philmore and Travis Taylor to the list just as recent impact transfers.

He’s 6’3 so that’s decent size for a 1 but my thought is there are probably about 80 guys just like him. Hell of a college player and glad he’s on x though, and he should make some good money in Europe!
Xavier
12-11-2022, 07:40 PM
I’d take Crawford every day over every transfer we’ve had. No one could single-handedly take over a game like he could. One of the best pure talents to come through Xavier.
*let me rephrase. Crawford had the highest ceiling of any transfer in each game. He could be the best player on the court no matter who X played. As for boum being drafted I agree there are a ton of similar guys….but sometimes the difference between the guy that makes it and doesn’t is opportunity. If someone gave him a shot I could see it, but he will have no issue making a living and career off bball either way.

Drafted? NO
NBA material? Depends on whose system he ultimately gets tied in with and what their roster makeup is. He’s no slam dunk and it’s a long shot for 99% of the college players out there.
But I’m really glad he’s playing for X this year!

Very rare to have a career 2000 point scorer transfer into your program.
He has been exactly what we needed from a transfer PG, couldn't have asked for a better fit.
I would like to see him cut down on the cheap fouls, but I think he can make that happen.

Meh. Bernard rightfully is remembered in higher regards than Johnson. Neither were that great (I do feel for Johnson….he deserved to go the ncaa tournament) but didn’t Bernard have a big locker room speech to spark the elite 8 run?. He had some really important moments in that sweet 16 game too. We went down 7 and with like 2 minutes left he drained a 3. It gave us hope….his impact on Xavier, and it’s history, is way bigger than Johnson.
I’d rather have Johnson skill set but there’s no denying who meant more to Xavier’s program.

Malcolm Bernard was kind of a slightly-poorer-man's Remy Abell. A fairly low-usage 3-and-D wing. If Xavier had had one of those the season they were the #1 seed, they might have made it to the Final 4. Without a player like that, the perimeter D was porous.

Macolm will always be one of my favorites for the way he picked his team up off their asses midseason with his speech and got them back on track so they could get to the NCAA tournament. He didn’t stop there. He then became the lightning bolt that the helped propel the team to an elite eight. He peaked at the perfect time both on and off the court. He wasn’t going to let them lose that sweet 16 game against Arizona and Sean. For those reasons, Bernard goes down as one of the baddest players to ever wear an X uniform. Hail to Malcom Bernard. I love Nate, his shooting stretches where he went ice cold were really weird, but I absolutely LOVED watching him go off against Oklahoma. The injury problem also didn't help, I think Nate could have been really good here, and still was productive but some circumstances he had to deal with also didn't let him flourish.

Boum! His stat line against Georgetown is one of the best ever for Xavier. 28 points (11-18, 6-9 three), 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 turnover, 4 steals. He hit all of those shots, but missed his one & one free throw, could have hit 30.

I doubt we see frequent lines like last night. He played 39 minutes too. He did almost everything . Few TOs, and solid rebounding while stealing 4 is extremely impressive. We need more vs SH.

The other day, I showed the video of that Sweet 16 game to my son and tried to point out that “The guy coaching the team playing against X in this video was once Xavier’s coach before that guy coaching X’s team in this video was X’s coach and the assitant coach on X’s bench in the video then became the next X head coach after that X head coach in the video left… and then that next X head coach was the one who was fired earlier this year so that X could go out and hire a new head coach they really wanted… who was the guy coaching the other team in the video who again was once X’s head coach so technically, he is not a new X head coach but rather a past head coach rehired to be the next head coach.”
It was fun watching him try to follow. He was like, “Wait, what?”

I've had Souley Souley Souley Boum stuck in my head all season. I knew it was a Steely Dan song and the actual lyrics were "Voulez voulez voulez vous," but I don't speak German so I didn't know how to spell it. I finally admitted defeat in figuring out what song it is and googled it. Pearl of the Quarter. We haven't had a Xavier theme song on this board since Toto invited everyone to "Meet Tu Holloway."

Maybe, but who will spell him? Tandy appears to have a witches hex on him. Claude is becoming more trustworthy, but he still takes f'ed up shots and freshman mistakes.
A three minute rest each half would go a long way. Maybe you just have to trust Tandy or Claude for a short span, even with a dip in performance, for the greater overall arc of the game and season. Maybe those minutes go to Hunter and you run with a three big lineup for a while.

In the last 15 games, we are 13-2.
In the DePaul loss, after a tough Marquette game, Souley had 4. Then a below average of 10 vs. Georgetown.
Back at it against UConn with 21...then only 2 vs Creighton.
Is it possible that averaging probably 37 minutes a game in BE play is taking a toll?

Agreed, Jerome should get more minutes either going 2 or 3 bigs!
I think KyKy, when he is on his game could give 2-4 minutes to rest Souley. It's a choice between not having Boum fresher in crunch time or Tandy's inconsistencies.

It’s beautiful to watch how Boum lets the game and the defense he sees determine whether he will be more of a facilitator or scorer. Part of that mindset likely leads him to be able to score more in the second half. When the opposing defense starts to become comfortable in the game with Boum pass so much, Boum then starts making his move as a scorer.
Unfortunately, he’s looked like he’s been missing that next gear in the second half lately- and I wonder if some of you are right about him being exhausted from playing too many minutes. I hate not having him on the floor, but he is going to have trouble providing a spark if his energy is depleted. I also think the bigs -getting into foul trouble early on Saturday - threw a wrench in the flow of the offense.
Saturday’s game was just strange. As soon as Nunge got that bogus foul, the entire team just looked deflated and off. It will help that the fellas get to play the next two games at home. We got to get back to dictating our tempo and way of play.

Just one of those games on the schedule that every team has to face. We’re fine.

It was not pretty, but it got closed.
Boum needs to refocus his shot, like a batter shortening his swing toward the end of the season. Not sure if it is fatigue or the numbers just reverting to their averages after a fantastic start. Every player wants to drill the quick three, but keep the ball moving if he is not feeling it.
Now get the man some electrolytes and a nap.

Miller Quote:
"You play him and then you kind of follow him afterwards," Miller told CBS Sports. "And I always had high regard for him as a player. And in particular, the way we're playing. We want guards that can score. It doesn't mean they don't pass, but we're not trying for, like, pure [point guard play]. We want guys that can shoot and he really fit that."
Somewhere, Dwon Odom is nodding in silent agreement....

If I would had posted this in any further detail, some would accuse me of having an "ax to grind" or "making a stupid argument".
My comment on your post is- regardless of Boum's scoring numbers, it's good enough....and here's why.
He is putting together the most complete season by a Xavier PG...ever. We're talking Tu numbers here.
Souley is a mere 57 assists off Holloway's 174....good chance he exceeds that. However, Boum has turned it over only 41 times so far, and to reach Tu's 110 would be totally out of character. Both men have impressive FT & 3 ball percentages, but BFS has a clear lead in both. Now points scored. Holloway- 631 in 34 games....Boum sits at 374 in 23. If he comes close here....you decide.
If everything continues roughly in the same trajectory for Souley, a reasonable argument could be made that he is the finest PG to ever suit up for X. Again here's why....CONFERENCE PLAY.
71 assists- 16 turnovers....SIXTEEN. He had a ridiculous 9:1 ratio Wednesday, along with 20 pts....basically won the game. An absolute sick 45-51 from the line in the 12 BE games....that won several more games. ALL this in the Big East, not the A10.
AND...He's never been a true " PG".

Hell yeah! I see that last, much criticized shot against the hall, as more of an "I'm still here" exclamation considering recent less-than-stellar performances and end-game fails.

Boum at the next level is confusing to me. Just by watching I think boum would have a better chance to succeed in NBA than Jones. I get jones has the measurables and tools to mold into something (IE great potential in NBA eyes)…..maybe Boum looks really fast but compared to nba guys he wouldn’t be/add his size and it makes it really tough.
Regardless, I hope we get a special run from Boum in March.

someone made an analogy to Chauncey Billips and not a bad one. Billups in league a number of years before he found his role. Not a dunker or a big framed driver, but ran the team and made the big shot. Not everyone is a high flyer. There may be a role of Boum at next level

I love boum but billups was a top five draft pick, 3 inches taller and a very very good defender.
Boum is a hell of a college player and can make a lot of money in Europe. Maybe he can make a roster or get a cup of coffee in the nba. Not saying he can’t make it, but there are a whole lot of boum type players out there… for him the biggest thing would be even getting an opportunity.

So the BE POY is back to 17.0 PPG, behind only Sanogo at 17.2 PPG. Let's erase all doubt and get him the scoring title on Saturday.

And this before he's done!
I posted a statistical comparison earlier in this thread.....Boum vs Holloway's best year. Here is where it stands after that epic 33 last night.
Points- Holloway 631 Boum 511
Assists- Holloway174 Boum 136
TOs- Holloway 110 Boum 61
Tu played in 34 games Souley has played in all 30 so far. Not going to surpass Holloway's scoring/assist numbers in 4 games, but I think odds are we will play 5 more. Needs to average roughly 24 and 7 in 5.....if he plays in 6 it gets very interesting. Again, these are BE numbers not A10.

What are we thinking about the POY race? Who's it between?
I feel like Kolek might get it. Boum is certainly up there. Who else?

Kolek is a lock for POY. He might not be at the top in PPG but he is the key to the offense and that team.

If you use "best player on the league champions" template....Kolek gets it. League scoring champ on the 2nd place team? I like Souley's chances and he's far more dynamic. Keep in mind that Bryce Hopkins will finish 2nd in rebounds, to go along with a very possible scoring title. That is going to be hard to beat.
Now to be clear on the BE scoring title. I believe it is total points in conference games only.
Hopkins 330
Boum 324
Hawkins 322
Sanogo 304
Going to come down to the last buzzer on Saturday, for sure!

Souley Boum Named To The Associated Press All-America Team (https://goxavier.com/news/2023/3/14/mens-basketball-souley-boum-named-to-the-associated-press-all-america-team.aspx)
Xavier University graduate student Souley Boum has been named as an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American. Boum is Xavier's 21st All-American, including the 12th player to receive AP All-America honors. Trevon Bluiett, 2018 AP Second Team All-American, is the last Musketeer to earn AP All-America honors.
These were not the only honors for Boum today. Boum was chosen as a First Team All-District 5 selection by the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) and USBWA (United States Basketball Writers Association).
Boum, who was selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team by the league coaches and by Associated Press, earned Third Team All-America honors from The Field of 68, Stadium and College Hoops Today.
Boum, who was named earlier this month as the AP BIG EAST Newcomer of the Year, is second in the BIG EAST in scoring at 16.5 ppg. Boum, who has scored in double figures in a team-high 30 of XU's 34 games, has led the team or tied for team-high scoring honors in 16 games.
