Mike Peake (the player who ended up fatally shooting a New Mexico student in self-defense) has been suspended indefinitely by the university. But judging by this article, this whole situation might be the worst thing I've read since the Baylor/Dave Bliss fiasco back in the early 2000s. It certainly explains why investigators pulled over the team bus at a rest stop while the team bus was headed back to NMSU's campus in the middle of the night.

This whole story is crazy.

The cliffnotes version is as follows...

-Fight breaks out at the New Mexico v New Mexico State football game, and several NMSU basketball players are involved.

-Students from New Mexico who were in the fight try and lure New Mexico State player out of his hotel room when they were in town for the basketball game. Their way of doing this is by having a 17 year old girl reach out and saying she wanted to have sex with him. The plan is to ambush him and give him a revenge beating, and one of the students has a gun.

-The NMSU player leaves a room, but also brings a gun.

-An altercation occurs, the player is shot in the leg by an New Mexico student. He then returns fire and kills the student.

-The other students flea the scene. The player calls his teammates who somehow get a car, and he hides his gun and phone in the car.

-An assistant coach and administrator get involved, and help hide the gun. No one is cooperating with police, and the bus actually tried to leave town and go back to campus as the police were wanting to interview players and coaches. They actually pulled them over at a rest stop and searched the bus.

-They found the gun in the hotel room of one of the assistant coaches.


Both basketball games were cancelled this year.

This rivalry may be getting a little too heated.
