Not that uncommon. EVERY game that UC plays in a December, except the last one on Dec 31, is a HOME game for them. Other than the tourney they were in and the one game at NKU, they have played nothing but home games all year too. A close game wouldn’t surprise me either. X has played nothing but close games against their better competition. And UC is not a terrible team. They have some talent. But X has a HUGE advantage in the front court over UC and I expect that to be the difference in this game. If Nunge can stay out of foul trouble then X should dominate the paint area. UC has several pretty bad big bodies that they can throw at X, and they will all foul on a regular basis. Nunge and Free will have to keep their cool and not retaliate when they are hacked or pushed. It will be a man’s game down low and generally the refs call these games very tight. X can’t have their bigs getting into foul trouble early. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if either Hunter, Miles, or Edwards end up playing and contributing quite a bit.

I wish I could be as excited about this game and that this rivalry can get back to being what it once was.

Unfortunately. it just doesn’t feel like there are all the key reasons to get pumped up about beating them as we once had.

• We are now clearly more talented and expected to win.

• Their current coach is not as controversial or annoying as past coaches and therefor not as easy to dislike as those previous coaches.

• They no longer have a roster of players who are getting into trouble with the law or in trouble at school.

• They just don’t feel like that same villainous “Evil Empire” that needs to be taken down in order to restore the balance of power.

It feels like the Star Wars saga without Darth Vader: The bad guys just aren’t as interesting.

Somehow the WVU game felt much more interesting. I miss that feeling.

That is a pretty amazing stat to me in what we usually think of as a throw the records out type of close hard fought games always series.

I actually prosecuted Art Long and Danny Fortson during the jury trial before Judge Mike Allen. Long's behavior was utterly stupid but proving his intent to harm the horse was, for the lack of a better term, a long shot. Had he actually punched the horse instead of merely slapping it then intent arguably could have been inferred. Fortson was drunk and basically pestered the officers when he was advised not to so behave. He wasn't charged with obstructing official business but rather disorderly conduct while being intoxicated. Even though there had been a motion to suppress weeks earlier where one officer testified as to Fortson's admission that he had drank too much (I had advised the officer to review the transcript before trial); during the jury trial, the officer failed to mention the statement even when I asked him if Fortson had made any statements. (For the non-lawyers out there, I could not lead my own witness with any questions like "Didn't the defendant state to you...; and the officer's testimony as to a mere odor of alcohol wasn't enough to show his behavior was caused by alcohol.).

Without the statutory element of intoxication being proven beyond a reasonable doubt, Fortson's acquittal was all but assured. (I knew it was a problem but I was somewhat surprised by a few jurors who actually want to convict just on the conduct and the odor of alcohol.) In any case, it was another sad reflection of UC basketball and its reputation. I am not sure whether Fortson would have received any jail time but Judge Allen as a former police officer was none too happy as to what was alleged.

Gee, if only I could have put the horse on the stand to testify because I had Mr. Ed ready and available to testify as a character witness.

The week leading up to the handshake game, after a film session and before the team took the floor for practice, I once heard Pete Gillen exclaim "I hate them, they're motherfuckers" when speaking about UC. He knew very well how to escalate the hate. During the game, Gillen would also be heard telling Huggins to "sit down you fucking cry-baby". Huggs didn't like the trash talk from our Irish ginger coach, and wouldn't shake Pete's hand afterwards.

For what it's worth, I believe with all of my heart JP Macura would have kicked Mic Cronin's ass, had he gotten the chance to square up.

Remember the reasons we hate UC and put that emotion on full display.

I have to admit, I didn’t fully get the hate while I was still at X. I mean, I knew it was a big thing, but never really crossed paths with many UC fans. My sister married a UC grad, and he was OK.

BUT THEN, I started paying more attention on recent trips back. One trip after a game at Cintas (not vs UC) we decided to go to Arthur’s for dinner post-game. We had our X gear on, and a few seats down the bar was a UC guy and his wife. He’s hammered! Clearly regulars, and he started giving us shit. We were just minding our own business and ignored him for a while. That seemed to irritate him and he escalated things. We appealed to the bartender and she wasn’t quick to come down hard on a regular. It had a chance to get physical and we told her “if you don’t call the police, we will.” That got his wife’s attention and they were out the door pronto to stumble home.

I’ve been around a while, and I can tell you I’ve witnessed very few fights in my life. Grown ups just don’t go down that road and avoid situations where getting physical is even a possibility. (I’ve hit one person in my life, we were in middle school and he threw a basketball at my head from about 5 feet away.) This guy was batshit CRAZY because we were in the same establishment (and not exactly a dive) wearing some X gear, while minding our own business.

I have only been to one Shootout at UC. David West's senior year when he made Jason Maxiell his bitch. That was a great shootout!

I will be out of town for this one so again won't be making a trip to CCC.

Last week, however, I was in the frozen food section of the Oakley Kroger and I heard some guy in a UC hat who was pushing a shopping cart and dribbling a basketball say, "No, that's gotta go," over and over. It took a few seconds for me to realize that he wasn't critiquing the selection of frozen garlic bread, he was commenting on my Xavier hat. I didn't talk much shit back to him though, I let the current circumstances speak for me.

For those who are thinking about it though, it's easily the cheapest shootout since the dee Davis game in 2015. Tickets have been around 70-80 on stubhub the last few days. Only time I went to Clifton for a Shootout was when we lost in 16-17. UC fan behind me was as nice as could be during the first half when X had the lead. As soon as that changed he kept screaming at me saying how much money he makes in a year and how much tail he got while playing soccer at UC. One of my all-time favorite Xavier games (that I attended) was at Cincinnati in the 2008-09 season, Xavier won by 10, Frease (as a Freshmen) head-butted Yancey in a stack for a sideline out of bounds play, and there were about 6 technicals issued that night (and Derrick Brown, I think, was ejected). Game was great. Place was intense, game was hard-fought, CJ had a big game, and Deonta Vaughn was awesome for them. That was back when the game was really good, both teams were good (we lost to Pitt in Boston in the S16 that year), and intensity in and around the game was high level. Hope it gets back to that.

That whole Clifton Community team was a fake. They were built up by a fawning media but some of us saw through that ruse and called the upset on the old message boards. They played in the overblown Convict USA conference and couldn’t even get by a weak ass St. Louis team in the first round of their League Tournament after Martin got hurt. They were absolutely NOT winning any national Championship.
That team was one of Thuggins biggest media Snow jobs, and every Cincy media hack ate it up.

I was also watching the recently-posted YouTube video of the 2000-01 Shootout. It's remarkable just how much of a nonfactor Little was b/c of an early technical and subsequent foul trouble. David West singlehandedly got their entire front line in foul trouble during that game.

Hell, back in 1997-98 if it weren't for football players filling in for an injured UC squad, Xavier might have beaten them by 30-40. They ended up settling for a 20-point win.

That whole Clifton Community team was a fake. They were built up by a fawning media but some of us saw through that ruse and called the upset on the old message boards. They played in the overblown Convict USA conference and couldn’t even get by a weak ass St. Louis team in the first round of their League Tournament after Martin got hurt. They were absolutely NOT winning any national Championship.
That team was one of Thuggins biggest media Snow jobs, and every Cincy media hack ate it up.

When KMart broke his leg in the CUSA tournament, I was in 7th grade and was in math class when it happened. I was talking with friends how awesome it was (this was the peak of my UC hate) and my math teacher who was a UC fan scolded me that I should never be happy about someone getting hurt.
