Sorry, hit the wrong key in the "thread."
It should be the 18th, not the 15th. Maybe a mod can fix for me; can't do it in editing.
Also, not quite sure what IU's mascot really is. I don't think they are either.

Indiana has a great front court, is a great defensive team, a good rebounding team, is a poor shooting team outside the paint, a really poor shooting team from outside, and doesn't know what to do when they see a zone or pack line. Xavier, despite not looking like world beaters in some of their early season buy games, is potentially a really bad match up for IU. I also don't think Xavier will play with their food tonight the way they have in some of the earlier games.
I've guessed wrong many times, and I'll continue to guess wrong in the future. But this IS NOT a good match-up for Indiana. Xavier can win, and it may not exactly be down to the wire either.

Of course X can win. Won't be easy, but certainly a winnable game.
Everyone leave at 3:30pm and get nice and lubed up beforehand - I will do my part, will you???

This is pretty awesome. This did not happen in the Atlantic 10. Indiana is the biggest all-time program to play at Xavier, right?

Growing up in Indy as a young lad, I was a big IU fan (don’t worry fully recovered except my 80 plus Mom still buys me IU crap for Christmas tho). Back in day they were known as the Bison. When Branch took over, they became the Hurrin’ Hoosiers because the style of play.
Obviously this was in reference to the state name. Ironically, the word is a derivative of “how are ya all.” Hoosiers have a big mumbling problem. Go outside of Indy and you’ll get a big dose.
Edit: but to your point 99% of fans don’t know either.

Cincinnati is probably #2 in that conversation after tonight. Ohio State maybe, but it's one of those two (or UConn?). Until Kentucky, Dook, Kansas, UCLA, North Carolina or maybe Louisville come to visit, IU is the pretty clear #1 to date.

It’ll be great to play them at Cintas. Honestly, I don’t feel in awe of them and I don’t think any other X fan should either. Our program has arrived and is one of the top 25 in the country (The Travis project maybe hurt X a little). While IU deserves to be considered one of the 10 all-time great basketball programs, we have played some other teams at home considered pretty close to them: Nova, OSU, Georgetown, UCONN, Cincinnati, St. John’s.
Indiana has been trending down over the past 20 years (as have Georgetown and St. John’s), while teams like Nova and X have been trending up. A win by X today would help close the gap between our two programs a little bit more - but not as much as it would if X reached a few Final Fours and won a few NCAA Championships this decade.

Nova is a bigger deal than uc imo. I know locally uc means more, but nationally no one thinks uc is relevant in basketball

Of course. Gonzaga is a much bigger deal than UC, too, but historically speaking UC is the better program.

Okay, MAYBE??? But nobody who is actually playing in this game would say that because the last time Indiana did anything that was even remotely impressive, it was before any of them were even born. I think they had one year where they got a #1 seed, but other than that they've missed the NCAA Tournament as often as they've made it, they've only gotten a protected seed that one time, and other than their crazy run to the national title game in 2002 they haven't been past the Sweet Sixteen since....(checks notes)....1993. That's THIRTY YEARS!!!!!
Based on all that, I would say no. They're not the biggest program that has ever been to Cintas. In fact we get two or three in there every year just from the Big East alone.
EDIT: Chris Reynolds is the current NCAA Tournament Selection Committee Chairman. He is the AD at Bradley. The last time Indiana was actually Final Four caliber good, he was on the team. He is now in his 50s.
I know Indiana fans think that they're a nationally relevant and accomplished program in the present day world, but they're not. No one else thinks that! Archie Miller coached there and never came close to matching what he accomplished at Dayton. I rest my case!!! Let's not join the IU fans in their incorrect assumption that they are actually important. Let's just kick their ass!!!!

For those at the game tonight, be polite to the IU fans. Show some respect to them and to their team. Say that we have played against Purdue before, and while they’re not quite as good as Purdue and haven’t done as well in the tournament for the past 20 years, you’re still glad they’re here. Not as big as if it were Purdue, or Michigan, or Illinois, or Wisconsin, or Michigan State, or other teams in the Big Ten that are actually relevant, but settling for them isn’t all that bad.
Be nice. Show some class.

Great college basketball game - on the losing end, but not much to complain about. Obviously, we need some beef, but hopefully that comes with some recruiting cycles. Feel good about this team. Was a little bit of the ref show tonight.

I completely agree. I was disappointed in how many IU fans were there. Don’t know how many season ticket holders gave them up but man I was surprised. On another note while unhappy with losing lots of positives to take away. I thought Miller coached his ass off tonight. He got minutes out of Miles tonight in a big time game. Yeah we missed a shot to win should Kunk have passed it to Freemantle, I don’t know, but I like the way this group plays, season should fun.

Great college basketball game - on the losing end, but not much to complain about. Obviously, we need some beef, but hopefully that comes with some recruiting cycles. Feel good about this team. Was a little bit of the ref show tonight.
Just one question - how in THEE FUCK is that much red given the opportunity to come into our arena?
Oh - and Jackson-Davis is a STUD. Not sure how he had ZERO fouls however.
Easy. Lots of people sold their tickets for big bucks, and IU fans were buying.

IU is a terrific basketball team, one of the best to come to Cintas IMHO. As Sean said in the post-game, their #23 is going to be unstoppable for a lot of teams. That said, our guards need to get better at keeping opposing guards in front of them on defense. That will come. And when Kraft and Claude graduate from being freshmen, we are going to win games like tonight. Miller coached a great game, and the grit this team showed is very impressive. Down 7-8 with under 5, to having a shot to win shows the character and toughness of this team.

Overall a lot of positives, I thought the offense had clear intention. I actually think we beat them 7/10 times….Nunge and Colby played somewhat poor IMO. The key, as Sean said, was the start of the 2nd half. And Nunge missed some key easy looks to start the half. Maybe he was too spent playing Defense? This team showed great fight though- and unlike the OSU hype last year, that will for sure be one of the best teams we play all year.

sorry, but if Kunkel passes to Free, we probably win. He was open under the basket.
And he may have been blocked or fouled without a call.
Kunks happened to miss a good shot. I like this team’s chances going forward.
Best part, those who shot 3s are supposed to shoot 3s.

Attended the game; it was exciting although like others here, I was disappointed by the number of Indiana fans who accessed very good seats. I know money rules the day but it seems real Xavier fans would want to be at the game rather than make a buck on a ticket. Makes you wonder whether some of these season ticket holders are more into an event rather than being true Xavier fans.
Anyway, a terrific college game. X played toe to toe with a very good Hoosier squad and I think this game bodes well for the rest of the season.

Amazing game.
Hats off to the student section, they left it all on the floor.
Nunge, Jones, Kunk, Boum played fantastic games. Was totally awed by Freemantle, his growth/improvement from last year to this is amazing. He's diving, talking to other players, actually leading on the floor. He is doing exactly what you expect from a very talented senior.
Negatives??
Too many Hoosier fans in our house. Very sad that so many of our "fans" sold out and missed a classic.
And then the asshole sitting next to me, supposedly a Xavier Fan, throwing a fit anytime someone missed a shot or got scored on, calling our men show boats, and the worst, he called Nunge a pansy. I'm not a violent man, had to hold back. Can't understand why anyone would pay that kind of money and just spend 2 hours complaining and criticizing.
It was one hell of a game.

There are “fans” like that everywhere, I’m afraid. I have to be careful where I go after one of my teams loses.
I missed most of the game with company, but have it recorded. It sounds like we fought like hell and were still standing at the end. I don’t like losing, but I DO like what we look like now vs a year ago.

First of all, great game and great effort overall by the boys in blue tonight. Hell of an atmosphere and was glad to be able to witness it firsthand. It’s a damn joy to have miller back at the helm, and I’m excited for the future of the program.
However, two things:
1. Fuck off to all the season ticket holders that allowed that much red in the arena. There is zero excuse for that. Give your tickets up and let a real fan take them. Seriously F off to all of you.
2. Nunge’s defense was absolutely atrocious tonight. He gave Trayce the baseline about ten damn times tonight and his effort on that end was very questionable. I mean how many open layups you gonna give the guy? At least hack the shit out of him once or twice to make him hesitate once or twice to go to the rim.
Anyways, this is a tourney team. They certainly have a glaring weakness defensively in the interior, but they are good enough with millers teaching to make it back there. The future is bright.

Yes, X isn't in the top 25 now but we know what we saw. This won't be a team that collapses in BE play. Sean Miller has these guys bought in and this team is gonna be deadly come tournament time. We have the pieces now. The issue is they didn't win under Steele. Miller will get them to realize what it takes and we could be looking at something more special than the Lionel Chalmers 10-9 team that went on THE RUN

i was in an Indiana section is seems so quite a few sold. Jackson-Davis could play in a phone booth with his moves, he is like an athletic Ethan Happ.. Xavier Johnson hurt us bad and the only guard who can match up with these guards is Claude and (maybe) a healthy Colby as a guard. This has to be resolved as Boum, Kunk, and Kyky dont really have the size to match up man to man with big guards. Zach has played a "poor man's Hansbourgh) so far and Nunge was winded guarding Jackson -Davis which i think may have resulted in some misses on his part. Damn what a game

Miles and Hunter contributed 11 minutes of relief, but no offense.
I'm still hopeful Edwards develops. Something just doesn't seem right there.
If Colby can develop a 3 (a little late, I know) that would really help.

Watched on TV. Great effort by all. Takeaways: we were slower than each IU player at every position, except Boum; we looked "pushed around" under the basket too many times; offensive movement much improved; Muskies looked as focused as could be; FT misses really hurt. There is real upward potential for this squad. On to Portland!

Probably a little tough on nunge, but he got out worked last night. I can understand guys just being better, but it wasn’t just about that last night.
One glaring thing that was apparent in person last night is that we still look like Jv compared to varsity in terms of strength. I’m sure miller is working on that, and it’s not his fault, it’s been a problem for 4 or 5 years now. Look tjd is really good, but he’s not THAT good. If he was, he’d be in the league already.

Damn I wanted X to win that one. When Xavier held a 9pt lead in the first half and IU could do nothing outside the paint, I figured X had them, and that they just needed to make an adjustment to pack it in the lane.
And I still say IU overvalues themselves by more than just about anyone else in the nation. The gap between how good the fans think the program is and how good it actually is is perhaps the largest in all the nation, which is a big reason I really wanted X to win this one. But, tip of the hat to IU. They got a really nice road win.

Yeah Brew,
With that 9 pt lead, X could not match their intensity to maintain the lead, let alone build on it. However, it was the same case late, when IU had the lead and couldn't match our intensity. I personally think had Boum not lost his footing on that possession arrow....X gets the Dub.

We do need his distribution skills and driving to the hoop skills, but this could be the same type of player as Goodin. Smart but not much of a shooter/scorer. He is young and we will wait patiently on young Craft too.
Boum, Kunkle and Tandy look like their experience is paying dividends.

It really was a game that could have gone either way, but when a) your FT shooting is only in the 60s and you're allowing IU to shoot 60% from the field in the 2nd half, that's not a good recipe. That said, even if Xavier had a lead in the closing seconds, you could have bet the farm that Jackson-Davis would have had the last shot and likely end up hitting it.
Now it's time to beat Florida and be assured of two prime opponents afterwards.

When you consider where West Virginia finished last year, it's not hard to see why Huggins reshuffled the deck. I just hope it's either Gonzaga or Purdue in the final game.
Playing Oregon State and/or Portland State would anchor the schedule down considerably. No upside and potential disaster with losses to either one.

Whoa there XUKeith. Agree that there is plenty of room for improvement in his jump shot. But Des is four games, just FOUR, into his collegiate career. As far as comparing him to THE HEADCASE formally known as "Q", Des is already, even in his minimally brief career, a far greater asset than Goodin. In his junior and senior years Q became a human bricklayer, a drama queen and a huge liability at the point. Q would have never gotten away with the crap Steele allowed under Miller......ever.

Could see it on the replay on TV. The Indiana player bumped him in the legs with his leg. Should have been a foul. But then again there was A LOT of contact throughout the game that wasn’t called, especially down low. The calls (or lack of calls) was pretty much even and no reason to blame the loss on just that one missed call.

Both of you are right. He is a dominant college player and will be this year. He won’t be a lottery pick. As for the Boum foul, he appeared to be slipping a little before the contact from Indiana player. IMO a good non call when player is already losing control first….i never saw a replay on that out of bound play a few seconds earlier. Was it a clear foul from Colby when we were pressing and he got his 5th foul?

The worst foul call last night was the clean tie up that Kunk had and they called him for a foul. Cost us two points at the foul line.
Just a great College Basketball game, just like when we played St. Joes at Cintas in 2004. Two fine teams going at it. Somebody has to win and the bounce went Indiana's way. I'm fine with Kunk taking the last shot. He's gonna win a game for us later on this year.
I'm sure that Jack isn't used to get jumped over so he doesn't box out much. Free played great. Boum's 4 fouls hurt.
We're gonna be fine. Our biggest Big East competition is Creighton and Jack will school Kalkbrenner again just like last year and Boom will shut down Nebhardt. We can at least split with UConn. Let's get at least a couple of wins in Portland then school West Virginia and BeelzeBob.

Agree about Claude. I thought he looked pretty good last night. Not the best looking stats (1-4) but he showed a lot of toughness and his one bucket was impressive. It looks like Sean will be able to lean on him more than I had anticipated.
As for Nunge, he did not play his best game by a long stretch. It didn’t help that he went up against possibly one of the best players in the country- still Nunge is supposed to be All-BE. It must have been a bit of a rude awakening for him to not be able to stop Jackson-Davis—like—at all.
I trust Nunge will bounce back from that rough night with his assignment and his poor decisions on offense in the second half at critical moments that helped cause momentum to swing IU’s way in the game. He wasn’t the only one who made mistakes, but he just didn’t look like the same smart decision maker we all know him to be. I think he was a little rattled and it threw him off a bit. Like I mentioned- I trust he will bounce back and be as good as ever. In fact, I pity the player whose assignment is to guard Jack in the next game. I think he’s going to make their life miserable.
Maybe X needs to make it so season ticket holders can not sell their seats to non-X fans or risk the possibility of having to give back the rest of their season tickets.

I was wondering why Miller didn’t make a bigger issue out of him getting bumped. I think he could not see it from where he was standing. The guys calling the game as well as the refs simply weren’t paying attention or thought it was incidental contact… except for the fact that a player actually fell down because of it :sign-wtf:. Bad no-call.

Xavier wins that game with one less mistake and there were plenty of mistakes to correct. You have to be confident in Miller improving the team as the season progresses. A work-in-progress Xavier went toe to toe with the Big Ten favorite and conference POY/All-American. Jackson-Davis and Xavier Johnson together make IU look like a Final Four team.
Can Jack Nunge jump? His numbers would double if he jumped. Missing the point-blank shots was an issue against Fairfield and it bit us against Indiana. Nunge looked dead tired. Was he out driving a Lyft all night? Get the man some electrolytes and a Snickers.

tall players like Nunge (or Yao or Rik Smits) have such high centers of gravity and so much mass to move that they are not good jumpers..many other examples. Taco Fall, ..even Embid does not look to jump much. Someone i respect (cant remember) pointed out that for rebounding any size over 6'9" is wasted compared to jumping and quickness

Interesting to contrast Miller's comments after the IU game to Steele's after Miami lost yesterday to the same IU team, but by 30 points.
"We've got to grow up,'' Steele said. ''We've got a very inexperienced group. We're trying to figure out what wins at college basketball. This ain't high school anymore. This has been a pattern we've had up until this point. We go through these lulls where all of a sudden they go on a big run. Give Indiana credit, they made us pay.''
It didn't help that Miami took half their shots (34 of them) from 3, and made only 10, a percentage and volume consistent with their other games this season. Thank God we made the coaching change.
