View Full Version : Colby's Ankle?

Any updates on his ankle and status for tomorrow? Anyone with any inside info?
Feel like this deserves its own thread. He is so important to this team and it would suck not to have our roster at full strength going into such a big game.

I have not seen anything. Even if he plays, it's an ankle. Those take time.

Saw the tweet from Miller showing a pic of everyone. He is obviously hiding Jones' brace/foot to keep IU guessing.

I dont bet on games, but I'm genuinely interested in the current line, and seeing how much it moves once the decision on Colby is made.
How do they set the line in a situation like this. Is it just assumed he's playing? Or is it assumed he's not. Or do they set it somewhere in between?

Unfortunately, early results expose our lack of any proven depth. However, out of our 3 big time stars, Jones can be replaced production wise. Jack and Zach.....not so much. I am more than comfortable with Kunk picking up the slack for Jones and the 2 Frosh look outstanding IMO. If CoJo doesn't play.....hello opportunity!

I’d be shocked if he played. I just think if it was bad enough to get an X-ray it is probably a week+absence. Straight up guess though and Hope I’m shocked come Friday!

I disagree - sure, guys can pick up his offensive production, but Colby is the most important cog in the wheel. BY FAR our most well rounded contributor and someone we will miss drastically on the defensive end. He's a swiss army knife and while he's a guard, he plays big enough to supplement our big men as well, especially with his rebounding.
There's no other player like him on the roster, and his importance is far deeper than his offensive stat line.

I am not saying he will play, but I feel like in big time athletics they image everything.
The boot doesn't scare me either necessarily as they were probably doing all they could to take any weight or pressure off to get it as good as possible as quickly as possible.

Miller's presser just showcased on YouTube. He said we will know Colby's status tomorrow pregame shoot around. His foot/ankle has made progress and he is staying off teh foot.
Put me in the camp of "rest Colby" . We need him in BE and Portland torney. .
By the way does anyone remember back when Drew Lavender injured his ankle and Miller was "quite upset" that Lavender was not playing/ Maybe he needed to toughen it out in Miller's mind.

Yep. He's our best and most important player. The only evidence you really need is to point to how the team looked without him against Fairfield. It was a S show for the entire first half and a lot of the second. Yeah Kunkel and KyKy can pick up some scoring slack, but they don't have the other aspects of their game as you mentioned above, and the freshmen are freshmen.
Im excited to be in attendance tomorrow and hope we can get a W, but without Colby I don't love your chances.

Also disagree.
This is where you will see the competitiveness and mindset of Miller. If you can play, you play. If you can play with pain, you play. It's a sprained ankle, as long as you can tolerate the pain, go for it.
I'd be very surprised if we didn't see Colby tomorrow night based on Miller's comments, and I love it.

I don’t know what Miller said, and I know nothing about his actual condition. I’d hate to play him if it means it will delay a full recovery and hurt us down the road. I want our best shot at winning, and that would certainly include having our best player, but at what cost?
I’ll just do the only thing I can, which is trust the Doc’s, trainers and the player to do what’s best both for the near and long term. This isn’t the Super Bowl or a Final Four. I hope he’s well enough to play without further injury.

Here is hoping we get a strong "Screw you" effort within the game plan from Hunter. Only does what he is supposed to do, but does it perfectly for another 11/9 outing or something similar. I will take that.

Agree with this assessment. His versatile skill set, and calm veteran on-court composure are valuable to this team-----especially so before a wild sellout crowd like we will see tomorrow night.
That said, I hope I never see "Colby Jones" and "Swiss army knife" in the same post for the rest of this season. I swear if I see it again, I'm going to puke.

Colby is the jack of all trades, and much like a swiss army knife (S.A.K.), he does everything very well. Just as I dont leave home without my SAK, I dont want my Muskies on the court without theirs.

this is my thought too. Maybe a Hunder "revenge start" may motivate his as he has a similar but inferiour skill set with Miiles and even Edwards/Tucker for 5 minutes each depending on Ohio S lineup

Don’t equate X-rays with severity. From someone who’s had dozens of ankle and knee injuries, the first thing they do is take an X-ray regardless.

Well, didn’t he also say Jones won’t play if he can’t get a full practice in? I don’t know if shoot around will count in millers eyes. Talk about over analyzing coach speak….I’m just glad we can be happy about Xavier basketball again.

Nope... A home win against Indiana means more than a 3 games in 3 days tournament. Play for the now... Dont look to the next day until this one is done.

Absolutely how I see it.
While it was nice to see Kunkel step up and fill in for Jones, there is no question that Colby just makes everything better. He is like butter with corn. You might be able to get away without him, but boy is it better when he’s added.

Also in true Steele fashion, the team was 6-32 from 3. Im sure the shots will start falling soon according to him. I know Miami has turned into a crap program but they are going to regret hiring him. The guy is so far out of his league in the college game. It’s clear just by listening to him, he doesn’t know the game.

His very first line was "I was embarrassed by our performance tonight" - and then went on to say how bad his team was and "they have to figure it out". Same ole, same ole. Never takes accountability for what he sees as his team not performing. One of the most un-accountable coaches I've ever heard in my life. Coach - IT'S YOUR TEAM!!!

I went over to the Miami (OH) message board and they still love and believe 100% in him. I feel sorry for them because what they don't know is there is going to be 15-20 more of these this year and his script will get old real quick. I guess you gotta learn the hard way.
They 150% believe he is their savior.

Yep.
He became a pretty good recruiter at X under previous coaches, but never really learned how to be a good coach and so he’s had to fake it and hope he gets enough talent to make up for his coaching deficiencies. It just didn’t work at this level. You have to be able to do both to be successful.
Edit: Ha… now just seeing Bleedblue had responded with a similar remark. Steele is a solid recruiter not a solid coach.

I apparently didn't hear that first part. I was listening to later in the presser where he was praising his team and players and stating, "But we have to play 40 minutes, not 20."
Someone sent me his presser after they lost to Evansville at home. He started by saying how well his team played and that he was proud that "they competed".
Evansville won 6 games last year.
My top secret inside sources tell me that last year there was a very "country club atmosphere" with the team. And we saw the results.

On some level it would be funny to see what the attendant does if they see the designation (i.e. B/C4) but see a Fairfield logo instead of the IU logo. What's not quite as funny would be suddenly having to pay $20 to park in that lot if you forget your pass.
