I am surprised that nobody has mentioned this quote in Nov 7 article
""Me personally, I've never been to no (NCAA) Tournament, I've never been past the first round in the Big East Tournament and quite frankly, I'm not going out my senior year like that," forward Zach Freemantle said last week."
This is incredible but true, and as a Conn resident i remember beating UConn at Charleston Nov 2019 SC led by Carter, Bryce Moore and Zach(Naj hit a half court shot) and 3 + yrs later nothing. Hard to beleive and lets hope Zach gets his wish

That's a direct quote? He said that to the Enquirer? He has never been to "no NCAA Tournament"?
Well, I feel good that this is his year. But, if something very unexpected happens and X doesn't make the dance, at least Free leaves Xavier a well-spoken individual.

If I remember correctly, Free came here because of our success. Think he said (paraphrasing) he was proud to go a school that was a number 1 seed. Let’s get him to the dance and more!

Have you listened to him much? He is pretty hard to listen to.

That needs to change, really feel for the guys that committed on the heels of a really successful end of tenure with Mack and how we've not been to the tournament in so long, it's honestly made March Madness not as fun (though still fun for a degenerate gambler). I'm much more confident however that Miller will fix that issue.

coming from the NY Tri State area his alliteration is quite common for Caucasian basketball players who compete in high level summer league, AAU, etc. I have know a few (some lawyers) who sound like Slip Mahoney from Bowery Boys (go to youtube). I dont know if Midwest guys are the same but i have some friends/former teammates who sound like they have marbles in their mouth but have had good careers (mostly Education and Legal..never math oriented). I am rooting hard for Zach and i want to see 26 min a game and 14 6 and better defense. I was roasted for suggesting he look at films of Tyler Hansborough and channel him. His soph stats were almost identical.

You should feel honored. It is a right of passage to be roasted on this board.

Yeah, I’d suggest any PF/C to channel hansborough. One of the most successful college players of all time..

Are you sure you mean alliteration? Maybe elocution? yes you are right. I put into google "manner of speaking" and came up with alteration which was not correct.. However if you (like me ) are from NYC area and listen to O'Koren, Legler and local guys like Vin Parise and Joe Desantis (Fairfield star) you will hear the same kind of elocutiion..it is kind of an act

I was thinking he meant "illiteration" (which isn't a word, but would be funny) instead of alliteration.

That's on Steele. Look at Tandy. Dude stuck it out for this season. He is gonna light it up. Steele wasted that young man's talent and so many others. He will go down as a real dark spot in this programs history.

If it happens (or when it happens) it’s going to be in large part to Free playing like he is capable of playing on offense and playing much better on defense. As he goes, so goes the team. Zach and this team will have a very good season, IF THE DEFENSE CAN GET BETTER.

Zach is the early X team MVP( I know it is early!). He looks so fluid and confident on offense.
We have seen worse on his defense. 100% Freemantle is needed for X to succeed.

i notice zach guarded their best player last night (Bannen) and did a reasonably good job. He may have been on the 3 pt shooting big(Thomas) for a while and did not close but did OK. I also notice that when he missed 2 FT he seemed angry with himself which he may not have displayed last year. I also notice his release was quicker and he showed more variety so he will hit 10 ft quick release face up jumpers rather than relying on the jump hook. All in all an nice improvement..maybe my Tyler Hansborough analogy will come true (which was roasted before).

When he is on he is super good. He is always very hard on himself. He has great touch around the basket with strong moves. He is a good rebounder.
Hope his defense is not as poor as past years.
Maybe he is having a Christian Laettner type of year.

i took heat for comparing him to a poor mans's Hansborough.. Laettner is the best college player i every saw (and i saw Kareem , Walton, Thompson etc). Then again i thought Don May was better than Bill Bradley

Won’t say that he was the “best” college BB player I ever saw, but Walton was possibly the most dominate player. Only other one that I can think of that dominated a game like he did was Maravich. Pistol Pete could take over any game with his scoring and play making. But then, I never saw the Big O when he was in college, only as a pro.

A little over dramatic don't you think?
Prior to Bob Staak, there were several X basketball coaches that did not fare too well (much worse than Steele)
Imagine losing more games than winning for 20 years.
At least Steele's teams were NIT bound or in the mix for last at-large spot for NCAA tourney.
Other X teams were flat out horrible.
Between 1968-1980 X had a record of 110-195. They averaged 9 wins and 16 losses each year

If we were to ask the articulate Freemantle about the description of Steele by STAMINA0721 as a "dark spot on the program's history", I'm pretty confident that Free would label it hyperbole (as you seem to be). But I think STAMINA is on the right track. Let's start at Staack, the first coach in Xavier Basketball's Modern Era. None of the coaches preceding Staak had the talent that Steele had over his four-year tenure. Steele handled Tandy badly as he did Scruggs, Stanley, Wilcher, et al. Making the NIT is no accomplishment whatsoever. Steele, like some of the Xavier teams you reference in your post, was flat out horrible. I stand shoulder to shoulder with STAMINA, on his description of Steele as a "dark spot".

As much of an oxymoron "Modern History" is, I suppose if you apply it here, I would have to agree.
