Thanks to these awesome new transfer rules, we now have THIS situation:
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/34678118/boise-state-broncos-qb-hank-bachmeier-enter-transfer-portal
Now, I'm not entirely certain but my interpretation of this is that this kid may transfer MIDSEASON and play on 2 different teams.
Wow, what progress.

D'Eriq King's situation was pretty similar at Houston. He shut 'er down after 4 games to redshirt. At the time, the claim was that he was going to play at Houston the next year, but he transferred to Miami (for what turned out to be the Covid year; looks like he played part of 2021 with Miami, too).

Not likely. In order for this to happen he'd have to find a school who's semester or quarter hasn't started yet, which I GUESS could happen, but probably won't. Each NCAA school has a predetermined census date. It's usually a week or two after the start of classes, and it's usually the day after the last day students can add or drop classes. If a player not enrolled by that census date, they're not eligible at that school for that semester.
If it were basketball, or any other winter sport, then he'd be eligible when the fall semester ended IF he had already graduated. Football is also the only sport with the four game redshirt rule.

The drop date. That brings back memories. Everyone knew that date better than they knew their girlfriends' birthdays. Hell, we knew that date better than we knew our girlfriends' names. Some guys would combine the two and know when to break up with what's-her-name before her birthday so they wouldn't have to buy her anything. 400 level college dating.

Your explanation doesnt add up to me. You may be right of course, but it doesn't align with the kid's decision.
He had 3 full seasons played for BSU. He played 4 games in year 4. By rule, since he entered the portal, he has 2 more years of eligibility. So if he cant play this year for another team, he will sit out and will have 2 years AFTER this year. So in theory, he will have played in parts of SIX years.
he wants to get into the NFL and cited that fact in his statement. So, in his mind he should waste all of the remaining current year and then play 2 more years elsewhere. He's got a 3 year plan to make the NFL after ALREADY playing for 3 years?
Why not just finish the year at Boise St and then he would have one year of eligibility left to transfer and play elsewhere.
Again, the whole write up seemed odd to me as if he may suit up elsewhere this year, and if you say thats not possible then fine I wont doubt that one bit. But it does raise alot of questions about WHY this guy did this....

The normal rule is five years to play four seasons. With the COVID waiver, it’s six years to play five seasons because they essentially just said the COVID year doesn’t count. He could still play two more seasons after this year if he wants to and if someone will take him, but he almost assuredly can’t play for another school this year.

I'll accept your explanation as fact. I guess now I pivot to WHY he made the decision he did.
2 scenarios:
1) Play out this year as the starter at BSU, then transfer and play a final year at a higher profile school and hope you get an NFL look as a 23-24 year old QB
2) Enter the portal now, be in limbo for 6-9 months, catch on with a higher profile school and play TWO years there and hope it parlays into an NFL look as a 24-25 year old.
The first option seems like the best, most efficient, way to shoot for his goals. If he really thinks he has a legit chance at the NFL, then his mindset should NOT be that he needs 2 additional years to get ready. He's literally 30 months away from his goal.
Or, he just just loves being a student and wants to dot that for a few more years...

Now THAT I don't know. On the surface it doesn't seem like a good idea. AT ALL!
I don't think he's considered to be an NFL prospect either. Maybe he does just want to stay in school as long as he can. Who knows?

The article doesn't say that he plans to play this season. It specifically says "one of the most coveted quarterbacks in the NCAA transfer portal this offseason"
My interpretation is he is leaving now, will transfer to a new school before the start of the new quarter/semester, and will begin learning the new offense/system before next season. There is nothing to say he will stay the full 2 years. Nothing in that article says he wants to play immediately nor does it say he will use both years of eligibility he has left.

Who knows?? I don't know what's going on inside his head. He hadn't been having a good season, and his last game was particular subpar, and it was against a subpar team. Maybe he just decided "This isn't working. I want to hit the reset button and get the year over."
I was just responding to the initial post by stating that he isn't likely to play for another team this season. And by "isn't likely" I mean that doing so is damn near impossible as best I can tell. The reasons as to why he's doing what he's doing are a mystery to me. And, to be completely honest, I really don't care. He can do as he likes for whatever reasons he likes, and I hope it works out for him.

I'll restate the fact that there are some interpretation challenges here. He started the portal process on Sept 27th and was expected to be listed officially in the portal the next day. It goes on to say that he will be "immediately eligible."
So in isolation, that sure seems to suggest that maybe he's trying to suit up with a new school this year.
But yeah, it also says "this offseason", and of course the hoops that exist for enrolling etc (census date).
Weird situation. If he really is limited by this census date stuff, then would he just finish the semester at Boise State? Can he commit to a new school for second semester? Or, is there a portal "commitment window" that he has to wait for. If so, does he stay at BSU for a whole year, or does he just transfer into a new school and pay for it in hopes of getting a FB scholly for next year?
Bizarre!
What are the odds that within the next 2 weeks he does a 180 and comes back? I'm leaning that way.

It doesn't seem that bizarre to me. Clearly things haven't worked out at Boise (they fired the offensive coordinator this week, too), and he's just preserving his two years of eligibility. He doesn't HAVE to use them, but better to save them just in case if Boise clearly isn't the right answer for him.
Also, in the era of NIL, that extra year is more valuable than it would have been in years past. If he finds the right situation, he can get a good NIL deal and essentially be a professional college player for a year. May be a quite lucrative way to spend two years if he's realized the NFL isn't in his future.

I can see how it's confusing. Especially since the transfer rules are brand new, and the transfer rules allowing players who have already graduated to immediately enter the portal are literally just a few days old.
The portal has nothing to do with eligibility. It is merely permission to contact. Under the old rules, if a player wanted to transfer, their current school had to grant "permission to contact," meaning they could tell you which schools a player was and was not allowed to talk to, and where a player was allowed to transfer to and receive a scholarship right away. If a school did not grant this permission, it meant a player could not transfer there to play or receive a scholarship unless they paid for it themselves for an entire year. The transfer portal did away with all of that. It is basically blanket permission to contact. Players who enter the portal can be contacted by any NCAA school and transfer to any NCAA school without penalty so long as they're academically eligible.
Last year all players could enter the portal at any time, which meant they could talk to other schools at any time, even if it was in the middle of the season. This year, they have instituted "transfer windows." Essentially, players cannot go into the portal unless it is during a transfer window, which is basically the sixty day period after the season ends. They cannot talk to any schools and no schools can talk to them until they are in the portal. The exception to this is players who have already graduated. They can enter the portal at any time, and once they do they can talk to anyone. That's what he's doing here.
I'm guessing the phrase "immediately eligible" was the writer tryin to say that he doesn't have to sit out a year and can play next year. A player who DOES NOT enter the portal has to sit a year. Players who are in the portal don't have to. So, virtually everyone is now will be "immediately eligible" so long as their academically eligible to compete the following season.

I would advise this young man to hold on to college sports like grim death and avoid joining the real workforce as long as humanly possible.

He has the rest of his life to enter the workforce. Go to school for free and get as much NIL money as you possibly can!!!
