Happy for Jonas. He deserves a HC job. Georgia State is a program that he'll have the chance to make the NCAA tournament which could open up bigger jobs for him down the road.
Congrats Coach Hayes! Not 10 miles from me (but kind of a sketchy downtown area). Wish him all the best. Thankful for his efforts and what he accomplished, especially showing our young men what they could do during the NIT.

Congratulations to Coach Hayes! Much deserved and wish him nothing but the best. Hope he and Dwon do big things at Georgia Southern!

Enjoy all those lunches at The Varsity!

Do we have a barf emoji available?
My wife’s dad went there back in the early days of WWII while in dental school at Emory. I had heard about it forever! We took her niece a few years ago which was my first time ever. I think I’d rather be hungry!

We can't be friends anymore.
I’m from Buffalo, home of Ted’s hot dogs. My kids high school had better dogs at football games than the Varsity!

I’m not sure if they steam them, or warm them in their armpits. My guess is the latter.

They truly do suck.

How often does a school have the chance to hire an undefeated Head Coach?
Congrats Jonas!!!

From all of us to one of us, Congrats to Jonas!! If it works out well, we will see you back in about 15 years when Sean retires.

Surely there would have been contact between GaSt & Coach Hayes prior to and/or during the NIT run. Do we think he told them wait until the season/NIT is completed; or would GaSt have said we wanna talk when you're ready ?
And then what would he & Sean have discussed to the extent he knew GaSt was interested ?
In any event props for handling his responsibilities to XU to bring home NIT championship.

Georgia State didn't lose their coach until March 27th. So I'm sure Jonas heard from them last week when he was in NYC, but it wasn't like this was ongoing during the entire NIT run.

That's great for Jonas. Selfishly I would have loved to keep him at Xavier for at least another year, but this is probably a good time for him to move on while his stock is high after leading the team to an NIT win. Not sure he will necessarily get that kind of visibility again any time soon.

I'm pretty sure Jonas would have told Sean. Miller's offer was either a last ditch effort to keep him and/or just a show of support.
And maybe so we all know that he didn't leave because he was not wanted or was forced out.

All of these guys have agents who do the dirty work for them. They really don't need to be heavily involved until they close the deal.
I'm sure conversations were going on well before the NIT run. It's also not shocking if/when Dwon ends up at Georgia State.

….never to be heard from again.
I wish him well, whatever his decision is. I live about 10 miles from Georgia State. It’s an urban campus in a sketchy area, and I’ve never seen Georgia State and basketball in the same sentence until now. I assumed they had a basketball program I guess, but never heard of it. It’s a far cry from the Xavier campus, the Big East and a program that has every game nationally televised.
Again, I wish him well and realize people do things for their own reasons.

Georgia State was in the NCAA Tournament this year. Led Gonzaga with about 12 minutes to go in the second half.

They beat #3 Baylor in 2015 first round before bowing out to… you guessed it, Xavier.
X then lost to #2 Arizona. I truly don’t remember this either. Time is nuts.

I recall Ron Hunter's guard being a really good guard on that Georgia State team.
I’m not saying they can’t be good. I think Jonas is a great hire. I know people who went to Georgia State, and I’ve never heard anybody talk about Georgia State basketball in their home city. It’s just strange.
Maybe Jonas and Dwon can change that, who knows?

I had forgotten that Kevin Ware and his bionic leg were on that team.

First round draft pick RJ Hunter. Tidbit: went to the same high school as Justin Cage.

Yeah and they had a big win against Baylor in 2015. We then beat them the next round.
Both of their last 2 coaches have done well enough to then move on to bigger jobs.

Didn't see your post before mine. I had almost forgot we played them I was typing out that they beat Baylor that year.

Thing I remember about Ron Hunter is him using a stool with wheels because he tore his achilles in the conference tournament. He was also a good player at Miami as well.

Process this.
The former Xavier Head Coach had 2 future Division 1 Head Coaches on his staff, and failed.
Speaks for itself as to how much advice he listened to.
Nothing else need be said.

Well, to be fair, I don’t think Ben Johnson is any better than Steele. Jonas though I think has a bright future.

Georgia State has actually been to 4 of the last 8 tournaments. Hopefully Jonas gets there quickly!

Though the Gophers were atrocious this year, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, especially since Marcus Carr transferred, that was a big blow. They had some decent outings, didn't they beat Michigan State this year? I don't know, maybe Johnson is the same as Steele, but I feel like one year isn't a fair litmus test.
Jonas however definitely has a bright future, his stock was piping hot after the NIT run, I didn't think we'd hold onto him regardless, just glad it was an opportunity for him to be the HC and not some blue blood stealing him away to be a top assistant, think I would have lost my damn mind over that. Georgia State is a good fit, he's from the area, and he recruits that area well (still insane how UGA can't keep top talent in-state, like insane) and Georgia State has made the dance a few times the past few years, so not like he's going to some random school in Vermont's league and will have a chance to show what he can do. Plus by all means seems to be a real stand up character, I wish Coach Hayes all the best moving forward.

Thank you, I knew it was one of those southern Canadian schools, not nearly as impressive. They might have played Michigan State and Wisconsin close or something, or I could just be making that up. I'm too lazy to check, but I do vaguely remember thinking "hmm that's a decent moral victory for a conference bottom feeeder"
