View Full Version : Miller's Recruiting Impact

Been thinking about this. His recruiting impact is going to be MASSIVE.

I have heard he has a lot of overseas connections, that would be a new player pool avenue for X.

Also this is a guy who has now recruited at the absolute highest level. He has connections and access to certain schools, people, AAU programs, that no Xavier coach has ever had (including him during his previous stint with X). That doesnt guarantee anything with regards to those players coming to X, but it gets X access they've never had before.

I also love the thought of having dominant PG's again. Miller was a PG, he had great PG's while at X. He will get that position right.

The impact Miller has is going to be immediate.

Yup it’s gonna be awesome.

Since Miller doesn’t have a staff, do we want him to keep Peters, Jackson, Jordan Brooks, and/or Hayes?

Will having Jackson help keep Craft?
Will keeping Hayes and Brooks secure Ward?

I think we can let go of Claude and secure a solid pg in transfer portal to spell Odom.

Thoughts?

This will be a huge upgrade on the foundation of the X program.
Maybe UConn is in the way to 2nd place in BE.
Talent and winning are coming.

Personally I just wonder if at least some of staff shouldn’t be changed simply to shift the collapse culture.

Losing those hot, tan, Arizona girls to help with recruiting will be a major adjustment. Just walking around campus there I'm sure was a big, um, bonus.
X is going to need a welcome wagon upgrade.

Why let go of Claude? He looks pretty solid in the videos that I’ve viewed. I see him make some really good passes and also penetrate and finish at the rim pretty well. Now I know they only put the good stuff in the videos, but he seems pretty legit. I can’t really tell how good a ball handler he is though.

I’d imagine Sean will take a look (or has already done so) and see if the commits and other players on the roster fit his style of play. I bet he tells them all he wants everyone to stay and then he’ll see who proves to be a good fit and watch the cream rise. For the ones who aren’t playing as well, he’ll will give court time and either they will eventually develop into better players or enter the portal.

I could see both Nunge and Free learning to play much better together. I think like back when D Brown was being coached by Sean, those two will need to prove they can be forces inside before being given the automatic green light to shoot the 3. D Brown was both dominant inside and dangerous outside. Free will need to show show he can be an intimidating banger who is fearless and physical inside. Sean is just the coach to make it happen… though it’s probably unfair to compare those two to Brown. Those two are athletic but Brown was a downright freakish athlete. He could go up and get any pass. Oh O miss D Brown.

There has been some discussion that the Tin Man recruited the same type of player too often. I would wonder if Sean looks at the players they have and decides we need to go in a different direction. I know we need to honor the commitments but attrition might not necessarily be a bad thing if Miller doesn't think the player fits his plan. PG being discussed already.

I imagine he will push hard to make sure the player(s) he wants stay in the fold.

Just on a pure superficial observation of the 3 commits X has, Claude was the least excited to join. Craft was the first commit and Ward committed due to Hayes and Jordon Brooks connections.

I hope all three fit the Miller plan but likely 1 will decommit.

If it's true that players commit to a school and not a coach (I'm not sure I actually believe that) having a coach as dynamic as Miller certainly couldn't hurt. Miller will push hard for the ones that he wants. If they don't get re-recruited by Sean, that will be a sign to them where they stand. If an assistant was the only reason they are here, maybe it's not such a great fit after all. I think this will all come out in the wash.

Miller is familiar with the Big East (the 'old' BE) and will certainly change his approach from A10 and P10 to a BE style of play. Imagine a coach actually adjusting! I agree that a point guard is going to be a priority.

Of course players commit to coaches and not schools. Most go due to attachment to assistants, too.

It will be interesting to see how he evaluates the talent we have, and what changes will come. I think that's the most intriguing part of this.

I'm sure coaches pretty much promise a bunch of things to recruits - how can they not to seal the deal? But there's not enough minutes to go around for everyone on the roster. If I'm Ward, I'm wanting to play for a coach that can get me to the next level, but who knows with how kids think these days. Obstacles aren't taken head on anymore, they just walk around them.

I'm hoping Miller can keep Kraft and Ward on board, granted I trust his evaluation of talent and judgement more than our previous staff. I wonder if he'll keep Coach Hayes, I like Coach Hayes, he has made great inroads on recruiting the state of Georgia where he's from, got Odom from there, Kraft is from Georgia. It'll be interesting to see how things shape up.

Thought Hayes and the rest of the assistants today looked really dialed in today against Florida. Might make it easier for Miller to try to keep all or most of them. Thought it was a very solid game by X with much less forced plays and more chemistry (good passes) than I’ve seen since early in the season.

In fairness, Miller didn't recruit Lyons to AZ. He only went there after he and Mack reached an impasse.

I'll go a slightly different route... what about DaRon Holmes from VD? He's legit. Top 40 recruit from Phoenix area and had an offer from AZ coming out of HS when Miller was still coaching there. Very bizarre how he ended up at VD. The Flyer faithful might lose their minds if Miller called him up to the big leagues.

Yeah that's my logic. Miller recruited Lyons, like how he recruited these guys that are there now at AZ. Maybe he will bring on some to his new school.

EDIT: I see what you mean. But yeah, certainly not a coincidence though why Lyons ended up at AZ.

Watching and listening to his press conference, Miller is determined to find the right teammate and "our kind of guy" at Xavier. He made a point that he did a lot of chasing the recruiting rankings, but there is an even more important part if joining like chemistry and good teammates that is a bit better so he hopes it all will be ranked, and winning but it takes time.
The current Arizona team took 3 years of developing and recruiting.

Yea, I get them confused as well. Jackson was the lead on Craft. Think confusion comes from Kam playing his last year in Georgia which he was originally from Illinois. What does Jordan Brooks do? If he is X's recruiting guy, I guess he spends a lot of time researching all times of young players on multiple CYO teams, solid high schools. Not sure if he can travel and see talent live. I think he has a seat on the X bench too.

You are correct he is the recruiting guy. Steele decided to replace his special assistant (Graves) with a guy who can look for recruits, but not necessarily actively contacting them (someone please correct if I’m wrong on this). Same rules for both type of coaches. Im sure just by hiring Brooks, gave X an inside advantage for Ward.

The President's opening comments were telling in my opinion. She understands the appeal of a strong basketball program and the national exposure that comes with it. It it something that may lead students to take a second look at Xavier, where they may have not considered the University previously. Anytime I speak with someone around the country and mention I went to Xavier, they immediately bring up the basketball program. Christopher said we expect "excellence" and have "high expectations for Xavier basketball." That is exactly what Xavier Nation (i.e., alumni, students and fans across the world) expect. I think this is an incredible hire and Miller is the right man for the job! I think that thanking Travis for his contributions to the program was a very classy move.

I don't know much about the winning team but White led their team in points. Is White going to be playing d1?

I said it when he first committed to X and I’ll say it again, “Swain is going to be a very special player at X.” He can shoot, he can defend and steal, he is very quick and athletic. He plays above the rimz He passes well. He’s got a good handle: He’s smooth and fluid. He is the complete package. He reminds me of a cross between a Dez Wells and and D Brown.
