They better turn it down. Use to be You had to make a decision at the beginning of the year I thought. But then they changed it back to where you can deny it at the end of the year? Or do you have to go?

drudy23

Didn't we turn down a bid a few years ago?

I'm pretty sure you can turn it down.

It's the equivalent of a meaningless bowl game - players will likely opt out anyway. What's the point for Scruggs, Nate, and even Nunge? Nunge has been gassed since February.

Want to play the games with the young guys and actually play them 30+ minutes - fine, have at it. Otherwise, it's pointless.

If I were Paul Scruggs I wouldn’t play another minute for Steele after that bullshit commentary in the presser.

Maybe Paul did fuck up - but as the coach, you don’t call that out the way Travisty did. Absolutely pathetic.

Seems like this Coach causes confusion on what the situations are.

He was asked about Scruggs' foul. He said Paul thought we were up 3. That is all.

He didn't say loss was because of Scruggs. He blamed poor free throw shooting

I think there’s more to this story. Here’s a tweet (https://twitter.com/fox19jeremy/status/1501729217934938112?s=21) showing what Travis said, and also Paul mouthing “you said ‘smack half court’.”

Definitely some miscommunication going on here, at minimum, and possible something much worse.

The only way it makes sense is if he lets it ride with the young guys. That would also be the only way I'd have ANY interest in tuning in - and even then, I might not watch.

There's no point in playing these meaningless games and having Scruggs, Nate and Nunge playing their typical minutes.

I also think it would be hilarious if they went on a run with Colby, Cesare, Kunkel, Miles and Stanley getting the bulk of the minutes. Steele won't do that because he knows it could expose him.

So it's either going to be more of the same, which no one wants to see, or they will decline the invite.

i think it will be helpful to get out of the Big East rut. I would like to see Paul and Nate have a good experience and would like to see Dwon, Colby, Zach, Caesar, Adam,Dionte even Jerome and Ben(who i thought played well last year) play Rutgers, Texas etc. The problem with us in the Big East is that we are so overscouted that it is a true grind. Even I know Tyler Kolek is going left, Bryce Johnson is tough on the baseline jumper, Aaron Thompson is a righty who goes left, etc. Lets see how good our players are against the Big Ten, SEC, ACC teams who just missed. Lets make the best of it. 3 years ago(Hankins year) the missed the final 8 by a missed Q FT and probably would have ended in NYC where i could go. This is a laboratory for these players and i am intereested in the results

Agree. I was interested in the first year because the team was getting better as the year wore on, and I was excited for the future growth of players.

Now, we limped into the NIT in embarrassingly bad fashion. There is nothing for these players or coaches to prove. Let’s get this season over with

Looking at potential 7-seeds in the NIT:

Iona (with Rick Pitino), Northern Iowa (Cornsword), Princeton and Texas State.

Fortunately Xavier will not have to worry about another NIT game after having to potentially face one of these teams.

Not at all..live in Conn with 2 X daughters and i have not missed a minute since Stainbrook. When life hands you lemon make lemonade. Lets see how Colby, Dwon, Caesar, Dionte and others perform against good(not great) Big 12, 10, Pac teams. I am sure Ok State will be in the NIT..when we beat them that was considered a good win(and they beat Baylor and lost in OT to Baylor); that is just one example. Heck i would take the train to MSG if they made it. I was totally down the past month, would not even watch game as wife thought i was over the top. I would like to see these guys play a good game (if they can and i think they can) against a "good" team rather than watch the same old same old tight basketball(and we were the tightest team i have seen) with Paul dominating, Zach jump hooking, etc. I did not see anybody having fun this season, even during a win. Heck i watched Princeton lose to Yale (and i see some Yale games at $8/ticket) in a very entertaining game today and it was high quality hoop. Yale may be a tough out

My gut says they don’t want to let go of Travis. I think they are hoping for an NIT run as something to point to for “the future” and it will get talked about as “post season success”. I don’t think your gut is wrong.

But Travis should not be evaluated based on the NIT when the pressure ratchets down and the stakes are virtually meaningless. And Christopher is very flawed if the NIT has any meaningful impact on the decision.

Xavier hasn’t fired a men’s BB coach in the last 40 years. Has the AD or the President done it at their past schools? Have the board members ever had to contemplate doing it at X? I certainly don’t have any expectations that it’s going to happen while the team is still alive in the NIT. Nor do I expect Steele to resign at any time. So I fear that one of the biggest stumbling blocks to making any change may be that they really don’t know how to do it. I hope that they have been discussing it among themselves and have also talked with other AD’s and administrative people at other schools, along with HR and legal people, but based on some past episodes at X I’m not overly confident about that happening. My expectations are that either nothing will happen or that it will be handled poorly if they do decide to make a change. (Just to be clear….Expectations here means what I expect to happen, not what I see as the standard.)

Xville
03-14-2022, 07:04 AM
With this administration, I don’t ever expect them to do anything correctly. So, Steele will lead the team to another 18 or 19 win game season next year too and then we can contemplate if they keep him one more year or not.

No point looking at an NIT run as anything good if Scruggs and Johnson are involved. They are not any part of the future. Might as well just play guys that intend on being on the team next year.

Hard disagree. It's an exhibition. The seniors gave a lot to this team, if they want to keep the band together for another week or two, let them. It's for them (definitely not for us, as you'll see by attendance). Nothing material changes for next year by playing Miles/Edwards 25 minutes and getting bounced

My only statement is that I’m interested to see if these guys want to keep playing for Steele.
They could easily come out and say F-it. We’re done with this guy and lose as a statement to force the Administration’s hand.
If Steele is retained after that occurrence, there will be transfers and proof that he lost the lockerroom.
OR..
They may all band together for one last stand, play hard then the Admins are off the hook and so is Steele for now.
It will be fascinating to watch in real time and will speak volumes.

As a bonus, playing more games forces Steele to sit in a press conference and answer questions rather than just slinking off into the off-season. But I doubt that Adam Baum will ask any tough ones because, you know, Access. :-(

I've never felt the players disliked Steele. I think it's because he's not the directorial, confrontational type, and it's simply easier on the players. I think in some cases, players are relieved they don't have to deal with a coach in the likes of Bob Knight or Sean Miller. It's great for the satisfaction of the players in the program because it's easier, but does it really pull out their highest potential? Doesn't seem like it.

Makes you wonder - do most prefer easier and comfortable over winning/success?

NIT - 9pm Tuesday game - 95% of the fanbase completely frustrated - do they surpass 4,000? That even seems high.

Hard pass for me as well.

I predict 3,000- with -1000 students included. Upper bowl closed off.
Fan statement.

I am a glutton for punishment, I will be there as well.

Got randomly assigned the high roller seats at center court. So at least i will be comfortable while suffering through it.

I have no prediction but "fan statement" is difficult to prove. Tuesday night at 9 on 48-hr notice and vs. Cle State in the first round of the NIT is a tough sell under any circumstance.

Yeah when buying tickets the lower level is the only option. Can't pick specific seats either.

Nice, I wasn't the one who bought mine, so not sure where I am yet. Although when I went on to look myself it was assigning section 112 row E

Yes all lower seats are $20 and someone on stubhub has them listed for over $50. Make a statement guys! Nobody goes NOBODY. And if you're part of the Nielsen ratings like I was for 6 months, put your box in a other room. Xavier should get a zero raring for this debacle.

lol one ticket isn't gonna make or break Christopher going, and I'm pretty sure someone else would find a different person to go...so just go?

I'm extremely frustrated with Steele, hope they make the right decision this offseason. However, I love going to Xavier basketball games, so I think I'd almost certainly be getting season ticket again next year, even if Steele is our head coach.

Oh! Did they “accept” a bid or “apply” to be part of it? :-)

Technically, they applied, but everyone in the field gets to go to Daytona Beach and stay at this lovely hotel:

I know this is quite scandalous but something has to give.

X should allow UD to come to Cintas during the NIT.

X should clearly get smoked by a high achieving team.

This might snap the doldrums and slumber that AD Christopher and Steele are in.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

95% of the fans are upset? That seems a tad high.

I hope for change sake, no more than 3000 people show in Cintas.
Snap out of it President and AD!

Are the X students strong enough to not show up? What a message it would send if 300 students decide instead to camp outside Christopher's office and repeat "Steele Must Go"

I understand not wanting to give up season tickets. However, I cannot fathom why anyone would go to this game tomorrow night. There will be plenty more games to go to in the future, and I suppose you can watch this one on TV. I was hoping 94 would be the only one to show up, but I guess not. #SaveTheProgram #DividedWeFall

Can someone please answer whether season tickets holders are required to buy tickets for NIT tickets for games at Cintas? I thought we( season ticket holders) we contractually obligated to buy tickets. Talk about insult to injury if this is true. Asking for several friends. Thanks.

I had the same question. As a season ticket holder, I don't think I've received any communication about buying tickets for tonight. Granted, I'm not going, but still.

Weird that there has been zero communication about ticket sales for this game. Maybe I'm not important enough, which is fine.

Has anyone else gotten any communications?

We got an email about it. No requirement for season ticket holders to buy the game. All tickets were $20.00 and it assigned you a seat in the lower bowl. Seems like it was first come first serve as I bought mine right when they went on sale and got seats in row E.

The turnstile count for tonight would be eye-opening, no way it would top 2,000, regardless of what funky number they throw out as "attendance". I can't believe they want Cintas on national television 80% empty...but it is certainly a new day around those parts.

Win this one and I'd expect a slightly better crowd versus Florida (presumably), and then the reward for that is UD getting their dream come true and curb-stomping the Overlords in Gem City.

Yuck....all of it....yuck.

Listen, I know everybody keeps saying let's not go to any of the NIT games and email the President and Gregory. I think we all did a very good job of that. However, other then the fire Steele it's Miller time billboard I think we should pay for, how about a Sunday BOO BIRD Special? When Steeles name is called Sunday during introductions, just rains of BOOS! Pack the place with 10,200 fans all just to Boo Steele then everybody leaves and goes and watches the real tournament at Danas.

Everything about last night sums up Steele in a nut shell. Poor play, weak mind set, no preparation or worse the wrong game plan, and some player just rolling out with a select few playing hard. It finished close against a junk team and we were at home. Whether Iona or Florida, those team have decent players and one decent coach. We are getting rolled in the next one.

So yes the players carry responsibility, but Steele brought them here and developed them. He and staff either didn’t develope and prepare them to succeed or their game plan and scheme just doesn’t work. It’s probably a bit of both. I said before a coach gets four years to show what he can do. He recruits and develops his guys to fit his system. Four years equates to a senior class of his guys Juniors and sophomores who have been in the system enough to know how to play it.

Point is most of this dumpster fire falls on Steele and the staff. They failed at roster construction, development, and game preparation. It is clear that as his guys get older it is getting worse and not better. It should be improving at least a little.

Interesting that Steels talked about having to prepare for Cleveland State on short notice, yet it took the Vikings 5 seconds to figure out ball pressure on Scruggs and even Nunge would be effective. Unfortunately for them, they were even more careless with the basketball on offense.
