I don’t have anything to support my view here, but I think if Steele is gone then it would have been announced already. I see the NCAA tourney selection as being a crucial retention moment. If we don’t make it, the cut the coach and hire as immediately as possible. Let an interim guy coach the meaningless games.

If Steele coaches the NiT games, then he will stay at least one more year.

We are inside of 24 hours for this situation to peak

I think Mike White just wanted to reset his clock. He'd done well there, but it was 'Round of 32' well and not Final Four well like they were used to before. He may have had one or two more years at Florida. Moving to Georgia probably gives him at least four more years, and it's not like he took a pay cut or anything.

Saw that and he had an 18-13 record. They must be "more serious" about basketball at South Carolina than Xavier is. 18-13 and an NIT invite is apparently considered a successful year at Xavier. The longer Xavier waits, the harder it is going to be to get a decent coach. Xavier simply cannot compete with schools that have football money.

I said this in another thread, but we are complete morons if we elevated an unproven assistant to HC and then structured a contract such that it was financially untenable to fire him after 4 years. That would be truly outstanding incompetence on the part part of Greg Christopher. 'Football money' shouldn't be a factor in this one.

I was more thinking along the lines of what those universities can pay a new head coach. I absolutely agree that Steele's buyout should not be too high. Maybe we will get lucky and another program will take him off our hands. Doubtful, but he may want a "fresh start" somewhere as well.

The women's side of basketball is serious about competing for national titles at South Carolina. Baseball - well, they used to be serious about national titles there.

Honestly, I'm surprised Martin lasted as long as he did at USC - he was there for 10 years and only had 1 NCAA appearance (albeit a Final 4).

Please realize one of the primary purposes of "buy-out" clauses is to protect XU from another school and compensating XU if such transpires; it's not really something to be used to fire a coach.

Gates may do a great job at Mizzou, and he may have just had his guys at Cleveland State playing that style because of the talents of the kids on his roster, but I really was not a fan of the way they played. They played super hard and clearly were bought in and wanted to win against us, but I think the style was a bit of a gimmick. But again, he may have Mizzou play a completely different style given that he should have access to a very different talent level.

He also needs to work on his Covid mask game.

In order for a program to be fully successful, we all know that all program elements must be in place, including financial resources. I don’t believe they have a practice facility over there. Matta clearly gives them a major “splash” in the media. It will be interesting to see how this works out though.

I will take our situation with Sean Miller any day of the week.

I think the Matta hire is for him to be a bridge coach for a couple years, until he takes over as AD from Collier. Speculation is he hired someone like Nored to learn the ropes from him, then take over in a couple years. And Gregg Doyel, is at it again in his Butler hires Matta story, stating Xavier is so desperate to win they hired Sean Miller with all the NCAA allegations hanging over him. Butler used to be a feel good story about the Little Engine that Could, but their endless sanctimonious crap about them all being choirboys and Xavier being thugs is really annoying. That's why beating them to a pulp anytime anywhere is so satisfying.

I have come to see it as nothing but jealousy on the part of Butler fans. And spare me their back-to-back appearances in the championship game. They lost both games. They didn't win the championship.

More to the point, those appearances amplify my point - which you made in your post: they were seen back then as THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD. That was a 'sweet' description of the program, but that description carries a condescending tone with it, as it should. A little program from a low-major league, with an historic dilapidated relic for a home court, that caught fire under a young gifted coach that then performed well above its punching weight.

We hired their coach away from them. That's all you need to know about relative pecking order here. And their 'thug' nonsense is just that - nonsense. They certainly aren't choir boys.

Agree 100% Dash!
On my and Muskette Grad daughter’s visit to Hinkle this year we were literally verbally accosted by fans who made it clear how much they hated Xavier. We both took it as envy and jealousy.
Why would a school’s fans with 2 Final Fours act like that, otherwise.
Just for comparison, we have NEVER had a bad interaction with Villanova fans, and we’ve had plenty of them.
Butler is still so small time in everything. They are lucky to have caught lightning in a bottle and be in this league.
Lavall Jordan was Brandon Miller, with a longer leash. They are resource poor. Matta is probably working for lunch money

Georgia state? Yikes. Ok. I wish you luck, but I'm thinking you could have had a better selection next year. Thank you for your work in salvaging the season. You'll always be undefeated here coach Hayes!

Why do schools keep giving this guy run?

At least we won't have to listen to him during the season. I wonder if they will let him talk during the tournament since he won't be playing?

Rothstein reporting Mike Pegues( former XU and Louisville assistant) joining Thad Matta as an assistant.

That's former Louisville HEAD COACH Mike Pegues! Kind of tongue in cheek, but he actually was the interim guy there long enough to get what was probably some pretty valuable experience.

You are correct. That would have been a tough situation to be an interim coach in. Thad has a pretty decent coaching tree so this is probably a good opportunity for Pegues to learn under Thad. Supposedly Pegues had the opportunity to join Georgetown as an assistant, but chose Butler.

Coach under Ewing or Matta? I think he made the right choice.

I would seriously doubt it. Sean never worked with him and I am sure Sean knew what guys he wanted for his staff before he even took the job.

Maybe he thought (or was told) we would be in a position to, at least, be considered for HC when Thad bails.

Not if Kelsey beats him to it.

Friedlander: Pat Kelsey is the perfect fit to be Mike Brey's successor at Notre Dame - Saturday Road (https://saturdayroad.com/notre-dame-fighting-irish/notre-dame-basketball-pat-kelsey-brey-successor/)

Buckeyes are getting disgruntled with Chris Holtmann after just inking a 3-year extension last year. Wouldn't be surprised if Kelsey lands on their short list.
