CINCINNATI ---The No. 8 seed Xavier University Musketeers take on the No. 9 seed Butler University Bulldogs on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden. Xavier and Butler are meeting in the BIG EAST Tournament first round for the second straight year.

Xavier, 18-12 overall and 8-11 in the BIG EAST Conference, closed the regular season with a 97-75 win over Georgetown on Saturday.

The winner of Wednesday's game draws No. 1 seed Providence in the quarterfinals at noon on Thursday.

What is fascinating about this team is that it appears that a lot of the players have not taken it upon themselves to get better on their own this season. Steele has obviously given the team the green light to shoot three pointers at will, which is a huge mistake. On the flip slide, it is up to the players to "know their shot" and practice free throws. Xavier used to be an excellent free throw shooting team in years past. These are free points!!! Additionally, as a college athlete (or any athlete for that matter) you need to build bulk so you can be more physical and athletic. The strength and conditioning coach needs to go after this year because it appears he does not hold the players accountable (i.e., weight training, conditioning and nutrition). College athletes should not be given free reign when they receive so many free perks. There are tons of high school athletes that have the heart, but not the physical attributes that would kill for a Division I scholarship.
