Interesting afternoon for the 0-3 Musketeers. They travel to Louisville, who actually kind of stinks now after being top 10 most years for about a decade. The Cards are 1-2 with an 8-7 win over Charlotte and losses to USF and UConn. Xavier is starting a true freshman who basically never pitched in HS. He was hurt his sophomore year, and both his junior and senior seasons were cancelled due to Covid (ridiculous last year!). Obviously, most of the best baseball is played on the summer circuit and not in the high school season these days, but it's pretty interesting to have someone this untested starting an early season game as a true freshman.

The guy Louisville is starting pitched 11 innings last year and had an 8.18 ERA.

Flamm has been terrible, but otherwise the pitching was okay over the first 4. Not great, but okay. Oregon State kills the ball, though, so this will be a better test than mediocre Alabama and Louisville teams.

Olsen pitched really well at Alabama in the opener. Probably our best shot to steal one is tonight with him on the hill.

Heard on the radio earlier this week that Vanderbilt’s baseball team is experimenting with the players wearing Apple Watches as a way to combat sign stealing. Apparently in college baseball the pitching coach calls all the pitches (did not know that). By using the Apple Watches, the other team can’t try to steal the pitch call. Interesting idea.

We went to the game, met many Xavier families there to watch their sons play...from many different places.
Told a few of them that we were there to break the streak and bring one home...and she did!

Really strange play. 7th inning 1 out, they've got a man on. Ball's hit and barely grazes an ump standing behind the pitcher.
We turn the double play...but, BOTH guys are declared safe because ball hit the ump. Never heard of that. They went on to score a couple and take the lead.

I was checking out the team stats going into today....and the pitching definitely needs some help. If they can improve on that (like in today's 8-2 win!), this can be a good team. But who knows if that's possible. Coming into today, the pitching staff had a combined ERA of 6.87 (compared to 5.55 for opponents). Xavier had 7 pitchers cumulatively start the first 21 games, and their ERAs were:

Difficult to carve a rotation out of that, but that's what we're working with. Hopefully there are three guys that emerge as reliable once conference season starts.

I know a crafty left hander, class of 2025, who can make his 4 seam fastball dance, his change up drops off the table, and his curve ball will break a batter's knees. He is being recruited by several schools including UC, and Xavier. Won his first high school game last week while giving up 1 hit, and striking out 7 in 4 innings of work. If Xavier could funnel a bag to the kid's dad, I am pretty sure I could convince them to take their talents to Victory Parkway.

Creighton ended up winning the weekend series against Xavier, but the Muskies did salvage one win today. They're now 6-6 in conference play and a half-game ahead of both 7-8 Villanova and Georgetown. Next weekend will be the easiest conference series with a trip to Butler.

Creighton and UConn face off at UConn next weekend - that will pretty much determine who's #1 and #2 in the conference tournament. Xavier is currently thirs and should qualify as long as they don't have a catastrophic failure the last 3 weeks.

Butler is the only team right now that has no chance of qualifying for the BE Tournament a week from Thursday. With UConn and Creighton already locked in, Xavier just needs one more win (or a single loss by both Georgetown and Villanova) to clinch their spot.

Whoever gets the 4th spot is anyone's guess, Georgetown hosts UConn in the final weekend series; Villanova hosts Creighton and Seton Hall travels to Butler. This is why a 6-11 Seton Hall team sneaking into 4th this weekend wouldn't be far-fetched.

I will just say it's a damn good thing Xavier had a big comeback against Georgetown in the finale of that series; otherwise this weekend would have been more pressure packed at home against St. John's.

EDIT: Those times are very much subject to change and could be pushed to Friday since there's a good chance of showers/thunderstorms on Thursday. Friday onward should be better weather-wise.

Georgetown's party started after they led off the 6th with a shinburger that hit SP Justin Loer in the leg. The Hoyas didn't do jack until he was out of the game.

It was good that both starters at least got into the 6th tonight to buy the bullpen a little time for tomorrow.

Was Xavier close to getting an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament? One would assume not, but somehow Michigan got in. Michigan was 32-26 and #61 in RPI according to Warren Nolan. Xavier was 33-27 and #62. Xavier swept their two games against the Wolverines.

Anyone else see that wild base runner interference call on Maryland? Batter was trying to get to first base and pitcher tried to throw ball over him to make the play. First baseman was standing on the bag and hitter/base runner drilled him. Even tho the ball wasn’t caught, the hitter was called out. The real kicker was the Maryland runner on third scored easily, but had return to third after the interference call.
