The details don’t matter. It’s just another way to say he hates Steele. I think we get that already.

I don’t know who it will be, but I want to get back to playing the “Xavier basketball” we have all come to expect.

Yes the obvious choices are the ones I picked. Those are the ones that people keep throwing around with the exception of John Brannon. Who would be your obvious choices not listed above?

Do people actually want Brannon? He was in way over his head at UC in the AAC..

Now to complicate this question/situation, I just saw this on MM:

"Just saw rivals rankings.

Tyrell Ward- #26 now a 5 star which is up 10 spots would be the first 5 star not a transfer, I believe

Kam Craft- #39 has climbed 17 spots

Desmond Claude- #83 biggest jump up 46 spots"

If we're going to change coaches, it's going to have to be someone that can keep the projected roster mostly intact. We're going to have a helluva a lot of talent (at least on paper), so we need someone to keep it together, and knows how to get the most out of them. It's a risky proposition: a change in coaches and we could lose a lot of players, which means x number of years rebuilding. Trust me, I realize the risk of maintaining the status quo.

Miller is attractive because he's a known entity, and will likely stick around, IMHO. On the other hand, if we hire an up and comer, we run the risk of that coach jumping ship at the first sign of success, a la Matta, Miller and to a lesser extent, Mack.

I haven't thrown the towel in on Steele yet, but I must say that the towel is in my hand right now.

I honestly don't care about who is coming in next year. If the coach isn't cutting it you have to cut bait. Shaka came into Marquette and they got Tyler Kolek and Darrell Morsell in the transfer portal. They seem to have no issues in year 1 with a new coach. It's not like Steele has a good track record of high recruits doing well anyways.

Problem is, If this thing goes south, like many here think it will, there is a high probability that a recruitment or two will be re-opened with/without Steele.

I personally think if things go really south and we do not make the NCAA Tournament then you have to fire Steele and take that chance. This is just my personal opinion. You can't live in fear about someone leaving or decommitting. If Steele is gone, then you hope that you hire a good person to lead this program and bring us back to the upper 1/3 of the league.

You think high school kids open up a recruitment after signing because a team missed the tourney? That is highly unlikely. They would probably be even more committed seeing immediate playing time. I think it’s more likely to see two or three current players go into the portal.

If Xavier makes the tournament Steele will be the coach next year regardless imo, whether it makes sense or not. If they miss the tournament, Greg Christopher will be tested. Will he fire Steele? If he does, will he hire the right coach to replace him?

Would hate to lose these recruits, but like others have said, if he can't coach then what's its matter. We've basically watched 4 straight seasons of the same thing over and over. This season isn't lost by any means, but they better figure some stuff out quick!

Since he's not coaching currently Miller is free to recruit and observe in ways other coaches can't. I wonder if he's sized up our incoming class ? And if there is any back channeling going on with he and Christopher ? Just wishful thinking on my part.

This makes me want to give Steele another chance. But I agree anything less then I say round of 32 and not a PIG I think he stays.

We already have his former assistant and player on the bench. If he did take the job and retain both assistants, then we would have assistants that are familiar with the incoming class.

As much as I would love it, Xavier is not bringing back Sean Miller. There’s no way they mess with the squeaky clean image.

Why isn’t Thad Matta on the list?

What’s the deal with him? I thought he had some health issues that caused him not to be able to coach and recruit at same level.

What’s the deal with him? I thought he had some health issues that caused him not to be able to coach and recruit at same level.

I remember when Thad decided - after interviewing at some schools for the head coach position - he was not going to be able to be a head coach anymore (because of his permanent back/leg and foot issues). Shortly after, I posted on this board that X should call Matta right away and offer him a lot of money to take a special position at the school (consultant/special assistant/some big title) where he wouldn’t have to trace but instead be there for Steele in the areas he needed help.

The big issue Thad had was that he couldn’t travel and recruit much. That was already a strength of Steele’s. The problem Steele was (and still is) having related to team preparation and game day strategies/decisions. Matta would have been the perfect person for Steele to lean on in those situations. He could give Steele every bit of information he had and likely help X get to the Final Four. Some posters here thought Matta would never take such a job. I thought he would. Well, turns out, maybe I should have called Christopher myself.

Did it occur to you that Christopher did have a conversation with him, and he chose to go to IU anyway? Not that I know anything, because I don’t. But I hate the narrative that our admin is doing nothing. I should say, I hate to think that narrative is true.

Possible he made a call, but I doubt it. Guess we’ll never know. Though if what you say is true, it would also say something about the administration’s ability to win the battle for the services of a former coach.
