I don't know how I would go about finding if this is true, but we have to be on track for a season high on "and-1s". We never seem to finish through contact, but tonight we've had at least three.
I wonder if Odom gets his feelings hurt when there is nobody within 10 feet of him behind the arc. If he could shoot he would be IMPOSSIBLE to stop.

Taylor Harris and Thomspon driving at will ..even if we win I am not happy and seems zero help. The replays show help opportunities. This has to be addressed but I feel other guards drive successfully a lot more than ours do. Zach's lucky 3 probably disguises this effort. We rarely if ever either block a shot as the driver is directed to the center or even foul without giving up a 3 pt play. Worst of both worlds. The zone is necessary. This is a huge weakness and Jaid Taylor just drove at WILL for a 3 pt play. This has been a layup drill even though we will probably win. This is a tie game without the technicals

I don't care if we play poor and win in the tournament but right now playing poor tells me this team is one and done. Can't make Layups around basket , can't hit from deep and our Free-throws are not good. We will make the dance and we might even get a high seed. But unless this team can make the Sweet 16 I think I have seen enough of this coaching staff. Either they don't listen to Steele or he just has no clue on how to coach. We will be the 5 seed and the 12 seed will spank us. That Creighton win did nothing but save Steeles job.

I think some of the issue on the offensive end is not using the corners at all. We're usually going wing to wing which compacts our spacing and makes it harder to drive the lane. I'm wondering if we can ever run the PnR play that gets Free & Nunge wide open 3's at the top of the key for other guys (Nate, Kunkel)? If the defender follows a better shooter out there then whoever has the ball can just continue to drive to the basket. On the defensive end, I saw Colby and a few other guys get blown by in 1 on 1 situations. I don't know if they're expecting help or just can't stay with their man. I'm glad we got the W but we made it hard on ourselves. You want to see improvement during the season but it looks like we are staying on the same plane over the past several weeks. Glad to see Free have a great offensive game. Just keep finding ways to win games. Tons of big opportunities still left for this team to rise up.

I can’t remember the last time I have seen a Xavier team with guards that for the most part are horrible at sticking with their man on the dribble.. they get blown by so many times…Odom, kunkel, Scruggs, Colby. I don’t remember if it happened to Nate but it could have. And, it’s butler not exactly the most athletic team in the world.

I do. I believe you can only do that for so long, as in not very long; not in this league, not in the NCAAs. I'm not one for aesthetics, I don't care what style we play, but I do care if it's a quality performance.
One thing I've noticed the past four seasons is that when we get up by more than 10, we let up in multiple ways. To me, that falls squarely on the coaching.

Not sure where to lay blame, I think at this level, it's hard not get blown by. What appears to be lacking is help defense and I'm not sure if it's by design or they're just late. When our guards get past their defender, it seems we're always running into a wall.
XUGRAD80

Nunge and Free are not exactly great shot blockers. They are neither fleet of foot, or overly athletic. Nunge can make up for some of that lack of quickness and athleticism by his length. Free doesn’t have that to fall back on. I think that the other teams in the league have seen that and the opposition is not concerned with getting their shots blocked when they drive to the rim.

This 100%. We need better rim protection and help defense. In today's game, with the way hand checks are called it's almost impossible not to get beat in a 1:1 situation. Butler's guards can't shoot for shit but they can really attack the rim. We need better rim protection or more zone against teams like that.

You have a point. It seems to happen more often than it should although the normal ebb and flow of a game may account for lead changes as well. I'll take the win but agree with you.
Our end of game issues conflict with really good teams like Nova. Having watched them in tight situations, they seem more disciplined and focused. Don't often see them miss free throws down the stretch, incur dumb fouls or push the action when the situation calls for the opposite. Coaching issues perhaps. Or, and I hate to use the term because it is such an effing cliche, but it may also reflect low b-ball I.Q. on this team. You need to have a big talent advantage if you are not going to play smart.

Just some random thoughts on last night. Even though X didn’t play well the game was never out of control.
1. I’m hoping that Nate isn’t letting his slump affect his overall play, he looked disengaged at times and defense was lacking Travis couldn’t and didn’t keep him on the floor.
2. Nunge looked out of sorts all night I don’t think we will see that again.
3. While most coaches tend to do it the offense for defense subs at the end of the game didn’t work out.
4. Great to see Fremantle play better, that’s three good halves in a row.
Tough league, take the win move on. Realistically we shoot a decent percentage from the free throw line, double digit win.

Jack Nunge had 5 blocks last night, he is averaging 1.67 blocks per game. He is ranked #64 in the country this season. If the season ended today, that would be good for about the 7th best average in school history. We have a shot blocker that is good at blocking shots. Sure it would be nice to have another shot blocker, but I don't agree that should be a focus for next season.

“It takes two to tango“. This issue also has to fall on the players as well. Focus and energy has to be as much their responsibility as the coach motivating them in that area.

Nunge's play last night was odd indeed. There were times when he went to the bench last night that he almost needed to be propped up. At one point during the radio broadcast, Bryon speculated that Nunge’s knees may have been bothering him. I’m not trying to start a rumor that they are. I’m merely saying that Lark also noticed that something seemed off about Nunge last evening. I’ll only add that it is impossible for any player to be 100% focused and motivated for EVERY game. It just doesn’t happen. As a coach, what your looking for is players that bring it every time, but with the knowledge that there are going to be off nights. You just hope that there aren’t very many and that you don’t have several players having off nights on the same night!

Nunge was hit in the face and got treatment on the bench according to the TV broadcast last night.
Colby did too.

So now we rely on the three-point shooting acumen of Zach Freemantle and Jerome Hunter for the margin of victory. That's a brilliant plan. That's a Swiss f'in watch.

Coaching issues perhaps. Or, and I hate to use the term because it is such an effing cliche, but it may also reflect low b-ball I.Q. on this team. You need to have a big talent advantage if you are not going to play smart.
Oh Gawd. We’re not back to “team Low Basketball IQ” again are we? I thought that ridiculous argument died with Q and Naji leaving. U know. A PG that led an Elite 8 team and a guy who is in the NBA?
Two of the stupidest end of game fouls were on Colby Jones. Has anyone ever accused him of “low basketball IQ”.
A ludicrous crutch. Just like stupid penalties in football, that is coaching responsibility to clean that up and hold players to account. PERIOD

Not sure if this is accurate, or if anyone saw it...
I think there was a play where there was a jump ball and we had the possession arrow, but there was also a technical on Butler and we took the foul shots and then got the ball out of bounds, AND we lost the possession arrow.
Shouldn't the T have resulted in the foul shots and the ball and we would have KEPT the possession arrow. Seems like we got cheated on that play.
I could be wrong, but if anyone saw it the way I saw it, is that the rule?

I think the issue was the T came after the jump ball had been called resulting in the arrow going the other way. Maybe it should have stayed with us, but I think that was the reason.

Why would we keep the possession arrow? A technical doesn't automatically give the ball to the other team, right? So lets say we score a basket and the other team's coach thinks we traveled and is going nuts on the refs.....the refs call a T as the other team is inbounding the ball, the play would stop, we would get FT's and then the other team would inbound the ball. At least I believe that is correct.
So I think it was a jump ball, arrow to us, then tech we shoot FT's then inbound the ball and the arrow changes over. We got the ball bc we had the arrow, not because of the T.

A flagrant or intentional foul usually results in FT's and the ball, but not a technical foul. Maybe that is where the confusion lies?

Yeah, I dont know the rule. I thought a T was shots and the ball. Maybe not...

with the 3 at the end of the game, the technicals won the game for us and that should be scary. Of course the situation would have been different and maybe we should not have fallen asleep. We need to keep players in front of us better and give some more help.. Miles could give us some more minutes if we get a few more fouls as a result

Yeah, Xavier won the possession arrow on the play in question. It was just a simple "point of interruption" where Aaron Thompson committed a technical foul by shoving the ball in Nate Johnson's hands (even a very subtle shove) and the possession arrow switches over to Butler after the Musketeers inbounded the ball.

C'mon, we let them score a meaningless 3 with 2 seconds left completely uncontested. The technicals didn't win us the game.
Totally agree we didn't finish them like we should have and that is frustrating, but the game was never in doubt.

I’m with you on this. I was disappointed by how we finished, but there was never a time when I felt like the game would get away from us. I thought that last uncontested three made the game look closer than it really was. We have things to clean up for sure, but we had that game.

Fair but is nunge coming back? I’d like either a banger or another shot blocker…can’t have enough of those or ball handlers. I’ll take one of each :)
He is eligible to return next season, and he may even have another season of eligibility after that.
So you want another shot blocker, a banger, and some ball handlers? Sounds like a shopping list for every coach, in every program, every off season, for all of college basketball. ;-)
