I don’t think it is any accident that Xavier’s offense looks so much better this year. Hey, I know we are shooting better, BUT, a big part of that is that the SCHEME is better that allows for better looks- and credit to the guys for knocking them down.
I believe that a big part of that is the addition of Danny Peters to the Coaching Staff- and Travis Steele having the sense to listen to him. I have always said that really good Assistants make a good head coach. There is only so much one man can process, and you need other eyes and minds. Steele was badly served by Matthew Graves- a failed Head Coach- the last two years. I have no insight as to the Travis Steele-Ben Johnson relationship, but it’s probably irrelevant because Johnson was more of the “Defensive Coordinator”- a role that Dante Jackson has taken over to good effect. Graves was supposedly the “Offense” guy but Steele never consulted with him in game, I noticed.
When Peters- the son of a former NE Ohio College HC Dan Peters- was hired the first thing that Steele said about him was that he had a “Great Offensive Mind”. He also worked for many years under Sean Miller, which is a good thing.
I had a chance to attend a practice earlier in the year with another of our Illustrious Posters. While I still thought that they shot too many threes, it seemed that the screening, cutting and overall flow was much better. While I’m not in the locker room, it is evident that something had changed, and I believe that replacing Graves with Danny Peters has paid dividends.
I was at Hinkle Friday night with Musketette Daughter and saw us lay a cool 87 points on a team that was only averaging 61 ppg given up. Thanks to Adam Kunkle for some of that, but our offense overall was awesome with numerous guys involved & contributing.
I’m giving lots of credit to “Offensive Coordinator” Danny Peters.

Thanks MOR for the insightful comment. When members post comments like this people like me (without inside opps) learn something. Another reason this board continues to grow!

Good stuff here thank you! You are only as good as the people you surround yourself with so I like to read that he sounds like a great fit.

Keep it up and I just might forgive him for being on the 2006-2007 Ohio State team.....maybe

I'd say Minnesota is doing just fine with Ben Johnson so far this season.

Great read, MOR.
If you consider combining your points about have a strategist who knows what he is doing with a roster that loaded in key talent like Nunge and Hunter (overall great player who is hopefully settling down on the 3-ball thingy), then what we're seeing now makes sense. The pieces are in place and they are being properly guided.
Now it's up to them to stay focused and hungry. It's also up to them to have fun. I offer that last sentence because they clearly appear to be having fun and playing for one another. At one point during the Buthead game, Nunge and Scruggs were smiling and talking to one another as Paul was getting ready to shoot FT's. Love to see it.

Thanks for the update. I believe Peters added some Miller-learned wrinkles which is always a positive

Who is this team's Justin Cage/ Stanley Burrell who sacrifices everything to make the team win in all areas? Jones? I want Jones to be a tad more offensively aggressive.

So far…but they aren’t killing it within the B1G so far. Time will tell but he did have a good start.

It's impressive that Kunkel is open from 30'.

That *might* have been outside the offensive scheme…

Any other degenerate gamblers misinterpret the title of this thread?

A couple years ago, it seemed like the offense was "Be like Nova" regardless of the personnel. Floor spacing and setting screens. Now, we do some of that obviously, but it seems we try to have a scheme that fits with our personnel rather than forcing the personnel into the scheme. It's one reason Zach and Nunge together continue to be fun to watch.

Yup, WW.
Remember when the “staff” couldn’t figure out how to play Hanky and Tyrique together? That was totally because of the tunnel vision “Be like Nova” idea.
We could have totally bullied the opposition down low on offense and smothered them with basket coverage on defense. We lost numerous games because of that misuse and mindset.
I think the “option vault” has been opened wider.

From Adam Baum this morning. Yes.
” Head coach Travis Steele watched the film from the Seton Hall game on the flight home, and with a visit from Connecticut on the schedule less than 48 hours away on Friday night, Steele headed home, where he was met by assistant coach Danny Peters, who was responsible for the scouting report against UConn.
At around 2:45 a.m., they started.
"We watched film all night," said Steele. "We pulled an all-nighter, we watched all the film, me and Danny did. Thought we came up with a good game plan, something simple, right?" “

Makes sense to me. That type of game plan, tenacity and defense would work against any team in the big East.

That's what is so infuriating about these guys. 40 focused minutes and these guys can hang with any team, and beat most. Loved being at Cintas last night watching them put it all together. I can accept a loss if they play hard and focused. I just can't stand the self inflicted wounds.

And they won without relying on super hot 3pt shooting. Several guys played very well, but no one player carried the team. It was a pretty solid game plan that was (generally) well executed and played with effort and intensity. If we shot FT’s well the game wouldn’t have been all that close.

So, are we seeing Travis Steele begin to turn the corner? As you noted when you started this thread: Graves did not work out, and Danny certainly appears to be working out. That is a major fix. And the last few years with Graves involved certainly appears to explain some, if not most of the frustration with Steele and Xavier's offense.
The way he prepared the team for last night's game is a very good sign. He focused on a well defined game plan that they absorbed, then they went out and finally played for a full 40 minute game.
I believe I noted, going into the second half of the Seton Hall game, that if Hunter was brought in during the second half, I was officially done with Travis Steele. He never checked back into the game. Edwards came in and did his thing.
Finally, someone sat Freemantle down and woke him up. He redeemed himself last night, because he made a pure ass of himself in his home state, and he cost us the game to boot.
Bottomline: these guys can play with anyone if they choose to play for the full 40 minutes. Let's see if the good vibe that comes from winning rubs off on them the rest of the way.

Interesting in that Xavier is in a stretch of 4 games in which 3 will be rock fights, yet St. John's dictates a track meet instead.

Make shots close to the basket and don't miss 20 threes. Yes, a good game plan.
