I was curious about the XU record against some of our better competition, so I did some legwork to pull together a history of our wins and losses over the last 30 years (1991-92 to 2020-21).

I literally looked at our schedule and results each year with the goal to identify games against teams that would be considered to currently be in a "Big 6" conference. So the "major" teams. I took a bit of a forward view by considering the composition of the Big 6 conferences in a couple years. As an example, I considered UC and BYU to be in the B12, while Texas and Oklahoma are counted as SEC teams. I also included games against Gonzaga because frankly they have just earned the "major" tag.

Also of note is that I counted games against teams if we played them BEFORE they were part of a Big 6 Conference. Virginia Tech, Butler, Creighton, and a few other teams fall into these categories...

STATS
-Overall XU record over the last 30 years is 673-295 (69.5%)
-Record against "Big 6" teams is 206-165 (55.5%)
-We have played 38.3% of our games against BIG 6 Competition. That percentage will continue to increase now that we are in the BigEast
-Our record against non Big 6 teams is 467-130 (78.2%)
- We have played 59 different "big 6" opponents
- We have more wins than losses against 29 opponents. We have a .500 record against 13 opponents. We have more losses than wins against 17 opponents.
- We have an overall winning record against 5 of the 6 conferences, with the Pac 12 being at .500 exactly.
- 109-80 vs. Big East
- 25-22 vs. ACC
- 15-11 vs. B10
- 8-8 vs. Pac12
- 25-18 vs. SEC
- 24-22 vs. B12
- 0-4 vs. Gonzaga.....
- Most wins: Butler (23), UC (17), St. Johns & DePaul (14), Creighton (13), Marquette & GT (12), Virginia Tech (9).
- Most Wins against teams that arent traditional rivals or conference foes: Purdue & Wake (5).
- Teams that have "owned us": Nova (3-15), Gonzaga (0-4), Duke (0-3), Notre Dame (2-5), UCLA (0-2), Tennessee (1-4), Baylor (1-3).

Thats it. No real commentary to share. I was interested in knowing this info, and thought I'd share.

I'm more disgusted with the 2-5 record against Notre Dame; especially considering that 4 of the 5 losses came against John MacLeod-coached teams.

All ass-kickings, too, except for the one that probably SHOULD have been an ass kicking (3 seed Gonzaga vs. 14 seed Xavier).

Who hasn't X played in the Big6 conferences? I found it interesting that the game against Oklahoma State was the first meeting between the two schools so I went to take a look.

ACC: X has never played Boston College or Syracuse. Haven't played UNC since 1950-51 season
B10: X has never played Penn State. I couldn't believe it. Last played Mich. St during the 1932-33 season!
B12: X has never played Texas Tech. Checked Oklahoma State off this year
PAC12: X has never played Washington State, Oregon State, or California
SEC: X has never played Arkansas. Last played South Carolina in 1941-42 season and UK in the 1968-69 season. That is just wrong.

That Nova stat is the elephant in the room I am perfectly happy to keep ignoring.

Against St. Johns, Depaul and GTown we are 40-11, by the way.

That Nova stat is the elephant in the room I am perfectly happy to keep ignoring. What kills me about Nova is that during our recent good years 15-18 we were slightly worse at ever position where as other teams that won (providence, Butler, St Johns, Creighton) has one player who dominated his matchup(typically a string pt guard like Zegorowski, Ponds, Cartwright, Baldwin) who dominated his position and made others better. We have really never had a scoring pt guard (Miles, Q, ) who could take over a game

I'm surprised VD is one of our 'most wins' considering, you know, the Carter Administration thing.

Tu?i have only been a fan since 2014(my daughters (2) there ) and am referring to the Villanova deficit in wins.

Similar stat ... I previously compiled and will look at it ... but winning an OOC game vs a then-ranked top 25 team on the road. Very rare. Love your stats MHettel.

Tu?

Semaj was a scoring PG. So was Sumner. Although we never really got to see Sumner for an extended period in full stride. He could have been an all time great XU player.

Tu?

He was referring to the era in which we’ve been slaughtered routinely by Nova, a stretch that mostly preceded Tu. That said, I think our record versus Nova would be much different during our Big East era had Tu been a part of it. In fact, didn’t Tu hit something like 200 free-throws in an early season tournament game to beat Nova his freshman year? At least that’s how I remember it.

My memory is bad but I feel like that was 10 FTs against Memphis in a tourney in the Caribbean. The game before or after the Dante Jackson buzzer beater against VT.

It all melts together after a while.

Yes, that tournament, I was thinking Va Tech was the FT game but I think you are right that it was Memphis.
