Jason Carter put up THIS stat line in Ohio's first game on Tuesday
20pts on 8-18 shooting (4-8 from 3). 10 rebs, 1 ast, 2 stls, 2 blks, 0 TOs, 2 fouls.

Couldn’t be because he had better sets to work off of or better looks than he got at X could it?

Maybe on the 4-10 from 2 (which isn’t very good); but his three looks here couldn’t have been any better.

Good for him. He could win the Wooden Award this year at Ohio and I wouldn't be sad he was gone. Hell, I hope he comes in second to Colby Jones in the voting!

i am a huge fan of slower white guys(hence the screen name) but for some reason after the St John game(where Zach stunk, Stanley got hurt and he had 16 rebounds and 10 pt(missed a few FT) he litterally looked like he forgot how to play. Q did the same the year before.. a couple of good performances and then nothing resulting in Kyky starting(no change for Carter though). Very strange as even as a supporter i could see the drop in effectiveness. It happens in all fields (Medicine, IT, Law, carpentry) but especially obvious in a metric driven game
I was as frustrated as anyone with Carter’s play at X. I feel a bit bad that a player who seems like such a likable guy had such a rough year last season. It just felt like he wasn’t really sure where he was supposed to be on the floor or what he was supposed to be doing (like the rest of the team) which contributed to his lack of confidence and poor play. It has been an ongoing theme with Steele’s teams. One that seems to be continuing this season.

Not for nothing, but I also feel like he had to play out of position for much of last season. He clearly had some mental blocks last year, as evidenced by his FT shooting (which used to be a plus for his game) and 3pt shooting, but he was also forced to play the 5 a lot to save Freemantle from fouling out.
I wished things would've worked out differently for him, he came here and finished with a weird COVID year, and missed out on Ohio's tournament run. Who would've thought staying at OU would've been the better move for him?

I'm not here to defend Carter or Steele... but I do recall hearing after last season ended that Carter had been dealing with an injury for a lot of the season, to the point where he wasn't even practicing during a lot of Big East play. He was just saving it for the games, like you see in the NFL.

Good for Carter. I think it was pretty clear his struggles though were mostly due to the physicality of the Big East season.

I think they were far more mental than physical. He had fans watching him every game who were clearly disappointed in what he was also, which has to be tough to a degree, going back to a comfort zone where they were sad to lose you, has to relax you a little bit, right?
(Not blaming the fans, just had to effect his state of mind)

No, we all saw that he didn't have the ability to play at this level.
I recall that you also once complained that Steele didn't use Dahmir Bishop properly and that he should have played more. Apparently the coach at SJU is having the same problem of not knowing how to best use Bishop. Either that or Bishop isn't very good and can't shoot.

Do you remember when Steele declared Bishop the most BE-ready of his incoming freshman class, which included Freemantle? That was so funny.

He was a 4 star recruit ranked 119 in the country and had offers from multiple high level teams (for example Texas, Florida and Providence). What the scouts and coaches saw in him is beyond me though.

in December 2019 X beat UConn (my alma mater but not a fan) in OT.. Who ended the game on the floor (UConn had frosh Booknight), Carter(free throws iced it), Bryce Moore(a big 3) and Bishop (some rebounds and a game tying foul shot). Shows what a difference a couple of year make though saw Bishop on St Joes Phil starting a few games this year and double figures on one
Jeezuz!!! Is every player that plays for Travis Steele “injured” in some way?
It is weird. I posted the same thought a bit ago. There has to be at least twice as many X players who have sustained an injury while on a Steele roster as there have been on any other X roster I can remember.

Then he went out and shot under 20% from the field and about 11% from 3.

Another one of his predictions that were so off base it makes you wonder - there have been literally a handful of predictions from him like this that came NOWHERE close to coming true.
He did get it right with Hankins. We got to give him credit for that one.
And Freemantle.
Ohio U was ESPN’s coach of the week
“and Jason Carter (http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4067398/jason-carter) dominating following his return from Xavier (https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/team/_/id/2752/xavier-musketeers),”
The Mid-American Conference is crowded at the top, but Ohio has made a clear statement it's going to be a factor in the title race this season.

Exactly. He was an attractive candidate because he played well at OU, Predicting how this talent transfers to a high major is difficult to predict. We struck lighting by getting the likes of Hankins from D2. The fact is, Jason's talent did not transfer. His level of talent works well in the MAC. I'm glad he is in a place that best matches his talents. We should all be so lucky.

i think he was a good 20 minute game a guy who could get 6-8 p and 4-6 reb at 4 3 and (at times) 5 position. With 32 minutes a diminishing return situation and i have no idea why Dontarious James or Grifin could not have gotten 10 min a game the past 2 years as Carter often had an "OK" beginning and sometime a decent first half stat line that just petered out to nothing at end of game
Huh? This thread started with how he went 4-8 from 3 in his first game.
My mistake. I stand corrected. I missed his stats from 3 for the first game and just saw the stats for last two games. He was 0-2 in each of his last two games. That makes him 4 -12 which is still quite a bit better than he shot at X.

Still think part of the problem was his game was not what we needed Happy he is doing well at OU though. We really needed another Hankins type of player (big, athletic and tough in the paint on offense and defense), but we got a finesse player who never really got comfortable in his role or found confidence on the court.

Jason Carter is a big man who has scored 45 points this year on 44 shots. He has gone 2 of 3 games without taking a foul shot. He is shooting 44% from the floor, which is not good for a big man. He has played three bad teams. Happy he is in the right place to finish his career but it was time to move on.

Hate this thread for a few reasons.
1. Jason Carter, and whatever success he has this year, was never going to factor into our success.
2. It didn't work out for him here, but I'm still grateful for anyone repping the X and giving their all for the program (he was on the floor for a LOT of loose balls, played through injury, etc.)
3. This thread just rehashes old complaints about Carter
4. This board seemingly will give anything to talk about Carter and Tandy v. Kunkel until the literal end of time.

Wrong. We didnt even PLAY Rhode Island. We lost to Temple in the Semi's. Odom hit the game winner in the final to get the auto Bid. the A10 was a 3 bid league, and we were the #3 at large. Rhody took our spot.
We were 8-5 in non-con (losses to Toledo and San Fran), and 12-4 in conference.

I watched much of that game. He primarily camps out in the high post and runs flairs out to beyond the 3 point line after setting a pick. He was little or no factor on the rebounding and defensive end, as OU was out rebounded 53-17. OU runs an offensive that relies on the 3 point shot as its primary focus. Almost a total 5 out set much of the time.

At one point JC drove the lane, defenders disappeared, he went up for a dunk, and was stuffed by the rim. Wide open dunk…and he missed. It was very typical of the plays we saw from him for 2 years at Xavier. I like the kid, and wish him well. I appreciate his time and effort while he was a Musketeer. But OU is a much better fit for Jason Carter.

I liked the guy and at times he was a decent contributor but if he played 20-22 min a game I dont think his production would have suffered and have no idea why last year Griffen, Miles(at times) even Ramsey could not have gotten more minutes. I also think if Stanley did not go down he may have eventually split time and Stanley would have put more pressure on opposing defenses. I am a little confused as Stanley and Kunkel are both listed as seniors and i "thought" they would get an extra year(Nate and Scruggs are listed as seniors and i get that ). Are Ben and Adam in their last year?
