It is worth noting that Memphis was picked to finish dead last--unanimously--in the AAC.

I am sure fans are concerned. More concerning is the lack of interest the athletic department has shown women's basketball in the past decade. The team has been in the play-in round in the Big East tournament every single season since joining the league. Is this even an attractive job anymore?

the women's program has, unfortunately, been a total disaster for almost 10 years now.

Loss to DePaul 85-103 but lot to like. Intensity for the whole game. While they finished the half down by 10, it was Xavier who controlled the up-tempo pace and turning DePaul's press into transition opportunities ... I haven't seen this in recent Xavier WBB play. It was DePaul who needed the half time adjustment to fall back and zone up the 2nd half. The guards were solid with Clark quietly scoring 19 taking advantage of the transition opportunities. Townsend and the emerging play of Hayes give some credible offense down low.
If you have chance to bring a daughter/niece to a Xavier women's game, this team has a lot of fun. Go X!

For those more in the know, are the women making some strides? I see they are 6-6 and won their first be game against butler pretty easily. Curious to hear and hope they are starting to come back to respectability.

A lot of damage caused by Brian Neil and his Staff. Along with Greg Christopher! Not an overnight fix.
Be patient. This coach has a terrific personality who treats her players, staff, and fans with a Genuine Caring Attitude. Huge difference from the past! The results right around the corner. Go X!
I see Neil is having his positive impact on Butler. :)

Good to hear. Hopefully they can claw out 5-6 wins in conference and keep building for the future.

The women had a COVID pause but are 6-9 overall and 1-5 in the Big East, with the win coming (easily) against 1-12 Butler, who is having a historically bad season for a power-conference team (currently 316 in the NET rankings). Xavier's NET is 203, which is up quite a bit from last year. They lost a close one to Providence, who is 3-4 in the league.
The good news (well, at least for now) is that the Big East is not a strong women's conference this year, even with UConn back. Only four teams have NET rankings in the top 100, and Xavier, Georgetown (215) and Butler both outside the top 200, so there is reason to think they can grind out a handful more league wins this year.
I will personally be more interested to see if there is yet another mass exodus of a half-dozen or more current players with remaining eligibility this year. Hopefully not. I still can't believe how long the program was allowed to toil under Brian Neal (cough, Greg Cristopher).

The Women got blasted today 96-62 by St. John’s at home.
This is getting no better.
Melanie Moore has to be on the clock.
Another questionable hire by Greg Christopher.

Seriously doubt she is in any danger of losing her job based on the long leash Brian Neal got.
I am curious why Nia Clark, the team's leading scorer, hasn't played in the last couple of games. No idea why. They have good opportunities for wins against Georgetown (2-9) and Butler (0-10) at home, which would get them to 4-15 in league play. Georgetown and Butler are both having dismal seasons. It does look like Xavier is destined to play in the first round of the Big East tournament, which they've done every single year since joining the league.

4-15 in league play is satisfactory??
Greg Christopher’s coaching hires have been sub standard- especially for the women.
This program has gone from a missed layup that would have been a Final 4 to this miserable state.
It doesn’t take forever to rebuild anymore…except at X apparently

Certainly not saying that I think 4-15 is satisfactory, but for this administration, it seems likely it will be. Four is more league wins than they've had every year since 2017.

At least there was one shining moment for the team winning today on FS1 at Providence. And this was a game where the top two scorers (Clark and Satterfield) were suspended for this game for violating team rules.

Looking at the schedule as sad as it is, they may end up with the most conference wins in 6 years just need 2 more and I think they will get it. That’s a step forward at least.

Agree. They're clearly better than Butler and, IMO, better than Georgetown, and have games against both of them left on the schedule.

It looks like it was more than just a suspension. Neither of them are listed on the roster anymore.

Always good to win at Butler no matter the sport. The Bulldogs may stink, but credit to the women for not letting a 50 point defeat on Friday beat them again on Sunday.

I mean it's good to get a comfortable win for sure, but Butler is 1-23 and is ranked 331st in the NET. I think that is probably going to set a record for the worst NET ranking (by far) by a power conference team.
The most unfortunate thing about how far this program has slid is that the bottom half of the league is BAD.

The women fell at home to Georgetown (54-40) and Villanova (58-49) over the weekend to fall to 4-15 in the Big East. They have a rescheduled game against Seton Hall tomorrow afternoon. If they win, they'll be the 9 seed and if they lose, they'll be the 10 seed in next weekend's Big East tournament.

Xavier lost at Cintas this afternoon to Seton Hall in a rescheduled game, 74-53, and will enter the Big East tournament as the 10 seed against No. 7 St. John's. This was the last Big East regular season game of the year and moved Georgetown into the 9 seed and X into the 10.
SJU swept Xavier this season, winning 83-63 in Queens and 96-62 at the Cintas Center.
Xavier is 1-8 all time in the Big East tournament since joining the league prior to the 2013-14 season and has played on the opening day every year, advancing out of the first round in 2015 for the program's lone Big East tournament win.

So, the team's top two scorers, Clark and Satterfield, are no longer with the team. I now see that Ayanna Townsend, the team's fourth-leading scorer (9.2 points per game), is entering the transfer portal, too.
Townsend was this year's Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's basketball.
Guess we'll hear for, what, the 10th year in a row, that the team is young and inexperienced next season.

I think it's too early to fire Moore anyway. I just don't really see many signs that anything is improving.
Also, do you trust Greg Christopher to hire a decent coach anyway? The track record is not good.

Coach Moore has her hands full cleaning up after what Brian Neal did to this program. Just look at his influence on the Butler women’s program.
Moore has already proven to be a better coach, and more importantly a better person than Neal! She’s done a great job reaching out to all former players, fans, and faculty to make them feel welcome.
Christopher needs to go before Coach Moore.. he’s responsible for these train wrecks in both programs.

Can't disagree at all with your assessment of Christopher or of Neal. I'm sure Coach Moore is a great person. That being said, her three-year record at Xavier is 17-67 and 8-40 in Big East play. Neal's last three years were 33-57 and 9-45 in Big East Play. Moore dismissed this season's top two scorers from the program and the fourth leading scorer is in the transfer portal, so there isn't going to be much coming back. Again. Last year, seven players transferred out after the season. I understand the whole idea of getting your own players in to your system, etc., but we're still acting like it's her first year when she's entering her fourth year.
How is this an improvement?

And, Nia Clark has transferred to Marquette. Whatever transgressions they committed must not have been that bad. Marquette is consistently one of the best teams in the league.
