Only watched first half.
Jones clearly is the best player. Odom is strong. Nunge makes free throws. Hunter a little too out of control. Stanley looked strong. Lots of driving to the basket and attempts to dish off to others. Lots of speed amd depth. Heard Kunkel got hot in second half. Defense and new guarding techniques liked strong.

Of course competition wasn’t the best, but good signs and a little concern. Colby Jones should be a stud. 3 pt % may become a concern. However, don’t expect Paul, Nate, and Jerome to have that type of percentage this year. Odom might be the wildcard this year. Meaning his improvement from frosh to soph may be just as impressive as Colby. Finally, it seems AK got much stronger. Might be different next week…

My takeaways from the Ferris State exhibition game. Pros: Intensity in the first half half was amazing as was Jones the entire game. Odom played well and many others showed good signs. I was impressed with transfers Nunge and Hunter. Defense was improved. Cons: Still no noticeable offensive plays or sets. Lot's of street ball. Maybe this was just the competion, maybe not. The size of the scoreboard is amazing BUT it basically showed the TV version of the game. It was used as a video board, not a scoreboard. You can stay at home and watch the game on TV. Hopefully, X is still trying to figure how to best utilize it.

The scoreboard is awesome. It is very strange though with all that space you can't find a dedicated space for the score and clock. As said hopefully they are going to figure that out.

Nunge 8 & 3 in 11 min. and 4/4 from the line is encouraging. I'm assuming his minutes were limited out of an "abundance of caution"?

Yea this my understanding. Goal for the game was to give Jack a 10 minute run.

A quick minute video from last night. My favorite play was the pass from Scruggs.

I love Odom but wonder since he struggles with shooting from longer than 10-15 feet, won't defenders sag back and try to keep distance between him and them? He drives and elevates very nicely and elevates over defenders to angle a shot; how might defenders try and take that away from him?
Edwards will be a very nice big man over the next 3 years. Sweet outside shot.

Yes. They have and they will continue to do so. He will really need to pick his spots and dish it enough times and well enough that they can't afford to do that too much.

I remember when Quentin started going to shit - he would either clank it from deep or try to hero ball it to the rack. He almost NEVER dished it off so the D knew exactly what he was going to do and closed him off time after time.

yep, and then it eventually just became clank. Clank. Clank… Clankity-clank-clank.

Nobody expects Odom to shoot better than Q's 30% from 3, correct?

I think that’s probably correct. the more important consideration, however, is this notion that Q only clanked 70% of the time. Mind blown.

Jones is the best all around player on the court.
They don’t practice set plays. And yes. I’ve been to practice. No emphasis at all on the mid range game.
28.5% shooting 3’s vs a D2 team sucks. A continuation of the past. We allegedly have better shooters? Maybe it’s the setups?
Maybe it’s just a one game blip, but D1 defenses are tougher and better. Time will tell quickly.

When X cannot score in transition, and X is forced to wait, there is movement for all players on offense, rotating and pick set for players.

I see that but there is a bit too much East/West passing for my taste. I understand that is to make the defense move, and hopefully opens up driving attack lanes for guys, but I’d still like to see some key post touches for guys like Nunge for kick outs- especially against a zone. That makes the zone collapse. We’ll see how that works out as it progresses but that aspect has been woefully lacking in recent years.

In order for that to work they need 2 things….a post player that can actually make moves and have the strength to score from the low post, and players on the outside that can consistently make a 3-point shot. Xavier has had neither of these things the last couple of years. Hopefully they will have both this year.

Totally agree and did not see much of this against powerhouse Ferris. Better develop quickly before BEast play or the wailing and gnashing of teeth here will be beyond deafening.

Hanky McSpanky could. I kinda think Tyrique could too.
Shooters? Depends who’s hands the ball was in at shot clock end, and too many times it was in the wrong guy’s.

True but hopefully there is a consistent post production that causes the defense to collapse

I thought the best teamwork X has had the last 3 years was the St Johns game senior night St Pat day 2019. Zach and Tyrique combined had 6 assists to none other than Ryan Welage as Naj was out. It was the cleanest game i have seen X play since 2018 on offense and it had to do with inside outside offense. I have not erased that from my DVR as i the last 10 minutes of that game were almost inspirational as the 3 grad transfers had last 19 points i believe with one turnover. St J kept isolating Welage man and he gave ground and Zach/Ty picked up with little damage.

I thought the offense had turned the corner early last year as they had multiple games where inside out basketball, with good shooting, made them look very efficient. It was relatively abandoned during Big East play with the exception of a late road win at Creighton.

The random chucking of 3's without any sense of offensive rhythm was mind numbing most of the 2nd half of the season. To the point where you wondered if the coach even realized what was going on.

Against Ferris State, 6 of 9 shots from Scruggs were 3s - 5 of 9 shots from Hunter were 3s - WHY? Neither are great shooters and both have great mid-range/slashing games. Paul probably has the advantage off the dribble and in the post as a 5th year senior against almost anyone.

Colby had the perfect box score - 25% of his shots were from 3, and he was very efficient in the offensive flow. This team should probably be shooting less than 20 3s per game unless it's a game where they just get hot (which happens 2-3 times per year).

they had the score on there but it seemingly was on and off. guessing they are just working out the kinks of operation during game. exhibition for the workers too and not just the team i guess ha

the team looked to be making more of an effort to push the pace, and looked good when they did. They were running some good PnR, but the half court offense aside from that was still kind of stagnant. Maybe a healthy nunge and freemantle help that with some presence down low.

defense was ok, it was a D2 team so tough to get anything from that.

Miles should be able to contribute but not strong enough to score on the block, probably can't guard real strong bigs either.
Ben Stanley looked horrible. grabbed some good O rebounds but would only go back up with his left and bricked pretty much all of those. Hopefully just rusty but it wasn't pretty.
Edwards should be good in the future at some point, but doesn't look quite ready yet. Curious to see what type of PT he gets in a real game.
Nunge was solid in his time he was in.
Jones looks like he's taken the next step, looked phenomenal.
Scruggs is scruggs, think we all know he is going to be the same player.
Odom looked good, pushed the pace, didnt settle for jumpers and was looking to get to the basket or dish it. drew a few fouls and played tough D as well.
kunkel started off slow but got hot late. we know who he is, just a matter of if he will make his jumpers consistently or not.
Can see Hunter being a good piece, but would like to see him try to do a little less on O and make better decisions. will he be strong enough to guard a big when necessary and quick enough to guard a wing when necessary, that might be the main thing to watch with him.
Nate johnson was a little cold today, but looked good.

was good to be able to go to a game again. scoreboard is a major upgrade from the previous one.

just my 2 cents from the D2 exhibition.
