Just curious if anyone has any detail on exactly what the issue is and what he's dealing with? Did he have surgery? I saw 6-8 weeks (from when) and then I saw he was out indefinitely?

I haven’t seen anything official but they need to shut him down until he is fully healthy. No need to make the injury worse by having him come back before the injury is fully healed. With him being a big, I hope this isn’t a lingering issue for him.

Went from walking in a boot to walking on crutches and a boot. Some surgery. Rumors are it is a stress fracture.

Take this with a very big grain of salt, but one of our posters is over on Holy Land saying there are murmurs he might need to take a medical red shirt. to be clear, this is the only ”murmur” I have heard of that sort.

Our best returning player on a team that is primed for a good season and we know squat about the situation. Very frustrating. You'd think they would release some minor details around the situation.

That is some speculation. What a blessing and a curse. I still hold out hope he is 100% by Dec. 25.

If the medical people think that is the wise move, I suggest MOR and some others give Steele another year of grace and we extend his contract regardless of how this season plays out.
I will duck and run for cover now. :-)

He had surgery in NY the night before the BE Media day. Doctors say it will be 6 week recovery. But it’s really hard to project how people will respond to foot injuries.

Yeah, if that is the case, sounds like X is already knowing it will take longer than 6 weeks. 6 weeks from the night before BE media day would be 11/29. Xavier has already said Free is out until at least BE play which would put the earliest game he returns for is 12/18 which is at the 8.5 week mark.
Maybe that just accounts for a 6 week recovery and 2 week ramp up period. Hopefully he is back by then but don't want to rush it if you risk further injury obviously.

If it is six weeks before he can get on the practice floor it will take at least a week to get any minutes in a game, and it would probably be few at that point. It will take longer to get his legs in game shape after being off them that long. He hasn't had the benefit of pre-season training to support an easier recovery. I also wonder about the long-term affects. What will his durability be for the rest of the year?
It will be interesting to watch the inside play for the next few games.

We would feel a lot better if we could see Nunge and Miles productive.(maybe Edwards surprises?).I guess we will know soon enough. I am optimistic on Hunter and Stanley who look more look like a poor man's Naj as far as size and skill set(now we know how good Naj was). We have always been hurt by Diallo, Bey, Samuels,Champage the 3/4 who can put on floor and create and I hope they can provide this skill set. Also without Free(for a while) I think Scuggs, Nate, Kunkel (and even Kyky) are better off as confident shooters knowing they are the first option when they get open. We shall see

Predicting we wont see Zach play until BE at the earliest. This one hurts because it sounds like he had the injury in August and they tried the walking boot initially but likely wasn't healing fast enough. Steele made the comment that they shut him down then......but waited 6-8 weeks to make the decision on surgery?

How unfortunate! I had high hope for him this year. He was the one returning player that I could really count on.

In the offseason it's still easier to believe in the depth and preseason hype (maybe Miles will be good THIS year!). I hope the Freemantle injury isn't one we begin to feel acutely against good non-con teams and puts us in a tough spot for the first half of the season. Probably our toughest player to replace, this injury is a tough one.

Xavier has already said as much, is my understanding. So I dont think there is any doubt we wont see him until BE play at some point. Let's just hope the beginning of BE play.

I thought I heard from Steele last night that 6 weeks was his timeline from date of surgery? That puts him back around late Nov / early December. First BE game is 12/18.

Ah, ok, thanks. When the news broke the other day it was being reported that he was out indefinitely and "hoped to return by BE play".
So, yeah that would be great if its more along the lines of 6 weeks. At worst let's hope it takes 8.5 for him to be able to play and that means he is ready for Marquette on 12/18.

Yeah totally agree. I likely means a couple of L's that maybe with Zack we win......but need him more for BE play and the tourney

Thanks for posting!
Didn’t realize his surgery was two weeks ago. Thought I read he just had it. That’s a bit of good news. Might be back a few weeks earlier than (at least I) expected.

From Andy Mac:
"Best news off the court - Zach Freemantle is out of the boot and walking on his surgically repaired left foot. Doctors say he is healing fast just over two weeks post surgery. Maybe Dec 1 return or thereabouts is possible?"

Sounds like great news. Would be great if he could get back a game or two before the shootout, but I'd take him back anytime before BE play to try and get up to game speed for BE play.

They are gonna take it easy on his recovery out of an abundance of caution. I doubt we see him before BE play. Will take him awhile to get up to speed anyway after not practicing for so long.

noticed he was out of the boot at the exhibition game. seems like a good sign, but i am guessing they will be overly cautious here and make sure he is 100%

More good news from Adam Baum:
"Just saw Zach Freemantle and he was walking unassisted.
No crutches, no walking boot. I'll see if Travis Steele has an update at his 2 p.m. press conference. Steele said earlier this week on his radio show that Dec. 1 is a reasonable return date for Freemantle."
"Steele: "(Zach) is progressing at a rapid rate. Our hopes, obviously, are still to get him out here in December to be ready to play. He wants to be out there. He's working hard every day with (athletic trainer) Dave Fluker." "
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More from Baum today:
"Travis Steele said Ben Stanley approached him after the Ferris State exhibition and told Steele that he doesn't feel right coming off the ACL and Stanley asked if he can continue to rehab until he feels more like himself. Probably won't see him in games until that happens."
Getting Zach back, healthy and in basketball shape will be critical to this teams success. From the way Steele has described the injury it sounds like a “ Jones Fracture” . Since Zach has the potential to play professionally, it would not be in his best interests to try to return to running and jumping on the hardwood until the injury is fully healed. Read this : https://kerlanjobe.org/understanding-the-jones-fracture/ . And then Imagine , if you will, that you were Zach’s advisor and wanted to make sure he would not refracture his orthopedically repaired foot now containing screws/ plates to stabilize the long bone in his foot. What time frame would you suggest before he runs and jumps on that foot? And how much time do you think it will thereafter take him to get in basketball shape and play in a game. We can update this thread when Zach plays his first game and the winner will be revealed!
