Hopefully he can open the recruiting doors out west.
I will forgive his participation in the Xavier 2007 NCAA Tournament OT loss to OSU and welcome this young man to the Xavier Family.

I have scanned a couple Bearcat boards and they are mum about losing him. They are happier to have kept Jason Terry on staff.

So does NO ONE have an issue that Coach Peters worked for a guy that CHEATED? And or could have also been invoved in the mess at U of A! The appearance of this, I think, does NOT look good!! I KNOW XU can do better!!

I wouldn’t worry about it. You are either winning or your not. That’s all that matters. If he can get Xavier good players and help develop players then he will be a good pick up.

Not a single article I read mentioned, not even in passing, anything about Coach Peters. Book yes, but Peters no. Also I cannot fathom that Xavier didn't check the boxes on this one as well.

Sounds more like Peters and Steele are pretty good friends which helped Peters get the job. Time will tell but I was hoping the new assistant had solid AAU recruiting ties. Peters does not seem to be this guy from what I read.
Welcome to the X family Danny Peters. Look forward to seeing you reel in some big fish.

I was hoping for someone that wasn't a buddy who could develop players and had a reputation as a tactician. This is lukewarm at best.

He is no Matta- that’s for sure. I too wish Travis would add an assistant who is experienced, smart, successful who he can learn learn a bit from. This guy may be helpful with recruiting - which wouldn’t hurt. We can only hope Steele is smart enough to at least keep reaching out to more mature and successful coaches who can assess his coaching and help him to continue to grow, improve in strategy and become a smarter decision maker.

In the meantime, Louisville and Mack hire someone with outstanding experience and known as an actual tactical guru. Not real thrilled with Steele’s bosses right now that clearly lets Steele do whatever he wants even though he hasn’t earned squat.

Who did Louisville hire and is he the third assistant? Louisville also promoted a video coordinator to be an assistant. Xavier wasn’t trying to find the number one assistant. Sounds like Peters is well connected and should help land some highly thought of players. He may be the greatest or the worst coach ever but I really won’t know his worth until I see the results. Who would you have liked to be brought in?

Thad Matta isn’t an assistant. He is an AD for basketball and probably help advise the coach. I think Travis still plans to fill that role with someone.

Third assistant...I mean seriously look at the difference between this guy and who Steele just hired. It’s night and day.

So? He doesn’t need to be a great recruiter, he’s the tactician, whose teams got remarkably better at each stop he was at. A tactician is obviously what Steele needs. The last person I wanted Steele to hire was someone who was a ‘recruiter’ with little tactical basketball knowledge. There is already plenty of that

Okay. So we want another head coach. Got it. We will see if that helps Mack. Recruiting is all that matter in college basketball. The teams with the best players usually win. I couldn’t tell you what kind of assistant coaches Gonzaga has, but they land studs. You want to win, get better players. And maybe Xavier already had tacticians. Didn’t one of the assistants just land a Big 10 job, and Jonas has been up for some head jobs?

And add Gonzaga. They are out recruiting both those programs. Crazy the class Gonzaga is bringing in.

Honest question:
What in Peters' background says he has 'little tactical basketball knowledge"? Are you just assuming this or is there actual information out there that says he can't coach, just recruit?

Not to speak for others, but you might want to read that again. He said “the last person I wanted” was a recruiter with little tactical knowledge, implying he DOES (may?) have tactical knowledge. It made sense to me, anyway.

Yeah, that's not how I read it and I could very well have been mistaken. I thought the sentiment was that the guy Mack hired was an X's and O's guy while our new guy was just a recruiter...
I really have no idea about these guys, I was just trying to interpret what was written. I don’t know the strengths or weaknesses.

To a point. I think recruiting and developmental coaches are the two keys to building strong programs. I actually think Mack is one of the better X's and O's guys. Really strong at play design and getting the ball to his better players in good spots.
You do keep bringing up Gonzaga though....it isn't like the program was built on strong recruiting. It was built on coaching and developing talent. They got into a top 5 program once the stronger recruits came into the already strong system.

XU 82 read it correctly...from what I can tell (admittedly don't know everything about the guy) but sounds like another recruiter but not a strong X and O guy, the guy Mack hired is an extremely strong X and O guy based on his time in Pro Leagues and everything that is written about him has been tactical info.

When Mack was the coach the team always ran some very successful out of bounds plays…..was that Mack or someone else designing them? If it was someone else, wouldn’t it have been Steele? I have not seen UL enough to see if they are also running them, but I do know that X isn’t.
I will say that player development isn’t just on the head coach, or even just on the coaching staff as whole. It’s also on the players. If they do all what is asked of them at practice, they will improve. But missing practices (which happened to A LOT of players last season) will slow their development.
The really great players however, are the ones that do MORE than just what they are asked to do at practice. They are the ones that come early, stay late, and work on their deficiencies when others are working on their social skills. They are the players that don’t just want to be great, but NEED to be great. I hope X has some of those players on the roster and that the coaches use they correctly.

I have seen Louisville, it was Mack. That guy can flat out draw up plays that put the right players in the right spots.

Because the people on this board don’t really know what they are talking about. Travis needs better results but the guy knows basketball and is well respected. Travis does a newsletter that goes out to 28,000 coaches all over the world, and followed by around 5,000 people on Twitter. He is not basketball inept like some on here think he is. I think sometimes he try’s to coach too much and needs to let players play. Hopefully he kills it this year. I think the pieces are in place.

People on here like myself may not know as much about basketball than Steele, but I did play the organized game as much as he did..actually more. We have seen enough good, bad and great to know those are bad numbers, and the results of the past three years are crap. He has had plenty of talent, so where’s the issue?

On the other side of the coin he is 29-8 in the non conference, has lost three games outside of quad 1 and 2, all in conference, only non power conference team he has ever lost to is UC. Took over a tough situation for a first time head coach, then last year covid shutdowns didn’t help. This is a big year. Needs to win and make it to at least the sweet 16. The pieces are in place. Let’s see what he can do.

Personally I’m not so sure the talent is all that it’s been cracked up to be. It IS better than the results we’ve seen, but I’m still not convinced it’s as good as it’s been in the past. There’s several players that in my estimation have a lot to prove too.

I think the young talent showed a lot of promise. Statistically it rivalled the stats of the freshman, sophomore class when Trevon and Jp were sophomores and Edmond and Kaiser were freshman. Should see a nice improvement from the guys making the sophomore to junior and freshman to sophomore jump.

He has plenty of talent in place for a tourney seed around 6-9. If he loses one of Johnson/Nunge/Stanley, it could be 8-10. There is not enough talent for a seed around 2-4. I just don't see that, but who knows this is why you play the games.
If he misses the tourney this year regardless, we are looking for a new coach.

It appears that Peters might be a very welcome addition, as it seems that he is giving Xavier a recruiting presence on the West Coast that it was lacking. Already a couple of players from there have Xavier now on their radar, where they didn’t in the past. IMO if Xavier hopes to become a national presence, they need to be able to successfully recruit all areas of the country.

No Doubt.XU grad80 is the real deal. Informed. Objective. I don’t know how he makes his bread....but I am sure his colleagues are happy he is one of them.
