I asked this on twitter and thought it would be an interesting discussion here. Who would you have most wanted for a 5th year?

EDIT: If other please comment who, I am interested to hear other names.

Ok this is totally cheating since he left early, but he was technically at x for 4 years. Could you imagine Derrick Brown though on that 2010 team with Crawford and Tu? Hello final four.

On that same note, I guess I’d say west but I’m just not sure if sato, charmers etc raise their game enough if west is there. Kinda Ewing effect I dunno. I’d like to say tu because he’s probably my favorite x player ever but the team was hot garbage the year after he graduated.

I gotta go with Zach Hankins........... J.P. a close second.

Yeah Brown would have been amazing staying for his 4th year.

There are two ways to look at it kind of how you alluded to. You can either just straight up think who you thought was great and would have just wanted another year of, but a more nuanced way of deciding is what the player would have brought to the team the following year and the potential of that team with that player.

Either way I think my answer is West.

West.

Just think about the ‘04 team with him.

An equally interesting question is who would you add to our upcoming team, excluding West (too easy). I pick Hill because he fills the biggest hole.

I voted Tu Holloway because Tu was the guttiest X player I ever saw, but Stanley Burrell was a close second.
The Hammer was an incredible Leader in play, word and example.

No argument with either of those players being tough SOB’s, but if we are looking at the CURRENT roster I think that you’ve got to go with a big, and none was better than DW. Hill was great, no doubt. But DW fits today’s game better and IMO would jell better with the current roster. Not to mention that he would be the vocal leader that they need and that Hill wasn’t. Hill was more of a quiet player. DW could kill people with just his look sometimes. His attitude at times was just give me the ball and stay out of the way, I’ll do the rest...we aren’t fu$#@*g losing this game! Tu was the same way. I was at the Vandy game and it was incredible to see in person, but they need a big more than they do guards.

But I’d love to have either Tu or Stan on the coaching staff....IMO Odom could turn out to be another one of them with the proper tutelage.

Fun discussion and I don’t think there is a wrong answer.

Um........ the leading scored in XU hisotry, Byron Larkin! Thats is a NO brainer!! A close second, Derek Strong, Jamal Crawford and Brian Grant! Hon. mention: Anthony Hicks, Jeff Jenkins, Dexter Bailey, John Shimko, Eddie Johnson and Victor Fleming!

Interesting question and some really good answers. I’m with a vile. For me, there is no one I was hoping would stick around for another year than D Brown. I think if he stayed one more year, we may have made it to a Final Four and he may have been a little more prepared for the NBA. It is unfortunate he stepped out of bounds at the end of the Pitt game in the tournament and it is too bad we never got to see him be part of that team the following year.

Since the question was “which player would you want for a 5th year”’ I would then go with Hankins because he was really starting to reach a high level and was still getting better. You could see how much fun he was having out there. It was just a joy to see him become more and more comfortable (and impressive) and see his game grow.

There are so many good players it would be great to have back for a fifth year but two other players I would be most excited to see play are Derek Strong and JP. Those two were playing there ass of and peaking at the end of their senior years. It was so much fun to watch them play and I would pay a little extra to see either of them on the court for playing with X for one more year.

Oh, Gawd. I was in Boston for that game. That happened just below me. DBrown had a toenail on that opposite baseline. He secures that and we can run the clock out/shoot frees. So hurtful.
But we did get revenge on Pitt in Milwaukee.

Yes we did get revenge. That first game was extra brutal for me, since my brother graduated from Pitt. He got to gloat a bit, until the next time the two teams met. Then sadly for him (and all Pitt fans) the basketball program took a nose dive. Talk about a school that’s been through more than a few terrible hires: 2 horrible ADs, 3 mediocre football coaches and 1 basketball coach (Stallings) who was about as bad as it gets. Stallings was so bad that one of his teams lost every conference game and finish with a 19 game losing streak. Yikes. Even the new coach who replaced him, Capel, is struggling to put wining seasons together and now just had a bunch of players jump ship. Makes our situation seem not quite as bad.

Coach K’s “tree” is somewhat unimpressive.

I will choose Stan Kimbrough.
Not only could he score, but he lead the team in steals. He played for Detroit Pistons for a minute.
If you included his points from Florida CC, had well over 2000 points.

I also follow him on Instagram. He probably is the healthiest 54 year old alive with his daily workouts.

Trying to think of any of his assistants who have gone on to make an elite eight or final four. I can’t come up with any. Am I missing someone?

IMO he is one of the most underrated player ever to play for X. Oh was he sneaky and scrappy. X was never out of a game when Stan and Jamal where in the game pressing. I remember being at a game where X was down by 7 with 45 seconds to go. It looked hopeless but those two went right to work getting a few steals and making a few quick buckets and sure enough they got the win. I would love to see Steele help his team get a reputation for being scrappy and sneaky all the tome on defense- like we saw against Creighton. I would love to see more pressing too.

I looked him up because I assumed he was an assistant or a head coach at a lower level somewhere and thought man we could probably use him, he’s the associate commissioner of the AAC. Impressive!

I might start a new poll to ask about the dumbest poll ever. You have a good shot at the title with your “How good has this tournament been” thread.

Just because it is 5th year, but if it was any former player I take Crawford every day. West is certainly the better player but Crawfords game translates much better in College now. Plus, Great guard play>Great Big guys in March.

Give me Crawford every day.

Posted the same thing to Twitter. Could only do 4 choices though. Did West, Tu, JP, Tre. That’s the order they finished and west only got 37% of the vote. Younger skew of fans though I guess.

Is playing some big time minutes tonight for the Pels as they are short handed. Even made a clutch 3.

The answer to the question though is DFW and it’s not even close.

J.P. Macura (aka Myles Fox Morrissey) just because three phantom foul calls robbed him and Xavier of their Final Four shot. For a fifth year tearing through the landscape of college basketball, he would make the wasteland of Mad Max look like a picnic in the park.

I know West is the obvious choice (Duh!) but I voted for JP as well. He was just so much fun. Great players may come and go, but few will ever match the moxy and sheer entertainment value of MFM. And he was a pretty damn good basketball player as well.

Lionel Chalmers (at the end of his X career). Operated on an extra cylinder during "The Run". Unselfish, yet also perfectly capable of driving the lane against the bigs (height, muscle, and conferences).

I would love to see a new quick, multi-dimensional PG at X, who plays like Chalmers (also an outside threat). Maybe we'll see this in Tandy or Odom.
