View Full Version : Starting five X players who’ve transferred out

Most X players who’ve transferred out were likely never going to be one of the stars on the team if they had stuck around. Some (like Kyky and CJ) may have been, but weren’t getting lots of minutes. There were even some who were starters on the team, yet left for some other reason than a lack of playing time. If you had to make a team out of players who transferred out, what should that team look like?

Which transfers would be in your starting 5 and who would be first two off the bench

Problem I’m having is finding any forwards worth a damn that I can remember.....maybe others can reach back into their memory banks better than I could:

Dez
Lyons
Kyky
Makinde London
Dontarius James

Off the bench:

CJ
J Martin I guess but hated his attitude

Gonna get outrebounded by a ton but gonna put on a show on offense

Starting 5:

1. Larry Austin Jr.
2. Lyons
3. Dez
4. Justin Martin
5. Boubacar Coly (not many great big guy transfers)

Bench
6. David Young
7. CJ Wilcher
8. Makinde London
9. Kyky
10. Johnny Wolf

I am probbaly cheating a little bit with putting Martin at the 4. If I had to go bigger I would put Makinde there.

Also I dont think D. Finn counts as a transfer, he played 4 years at X then obviously had his issues and never played anywhere else again.

Finn is a great example of someone who could have been special had he not had his off court troubles.

Finn didn't transfer. Just got kicked off the team near the end of his senior season.

True...DWest is right though, i thought for some reason Finn had only played 3 years. Shows where my memory is....anyways, switched it out for Justin Martin, though his attitude was crap

That’s right. Technically he did not make it on another team after being dismissed by X... correct? That would disqualify him.

Does Lloyd Price count? I think he played at a D2 school for a while after getting bounced from X. As I recall, Churchill Odia actually ended up being pretty solid at Oregon.

If Price counts he definitely makes my starting 5. I couldn't really remember or find online any transfers out prior to like 2001.

I think Price got arrested on some pretty serious charges before he was ever able to play at the school he transferred to (Delaware State?).

Pretty well thought out lineup.

A little surprised you have Austin ahead of Kyky.

Touched on this in another post - but yes- Finn would not count if he in fact did not play anywhere after being dismissed from the team.

Pretty well though out lineup.

LA Jr went on to have a really good senior year at Central Michigan averaging 17 pts, 6 rebounds, 6 assists. I don't see Kyky as a PG but I could have maybe moved Lyons to PG and Kyky to SG, but honestly I have Kyky 4th off my bench.

No Tyson Brit or Middletown's finest, Nate Turner?

That's because they stayed 4 years and graduated.
Which reminds me...is the Sister Rose stat of every senior who plays for us graduates...still intact?

Wondering about that myself. Haven't heard boo about it lately.

Which player had issues with a girl's dog? I maybe am losing memories.

Tyson Brit was not too bad as a player who I think left before his senior year.

Wow. And I thought my memory sucked.

Pretty sure Lloyd Price went to Farleigh Dickenson (spelling). Also, he held up a quickshop, and with those big ass ears was identified and convicted. Don't think he achieved much after X. He wasn't bad at X, but something soured.

I'm pretty sure Chuchill Odia didn't do much at Oregon. He played, but I think maybe as a rotation guy on a good team. Not the Starter we all expected him to be. Do you remember after he verballed to us, that Rick Pitino tampered with him and told him that he would pull some strings to get his green card approved...but it NOTHING to do with the fact that he wanted him to switch his commitment to UofL. And then he didn't uncommit and go to UofL and Pitino did nothing for him.

Tyson Brit might have been on the roster for one season. Didn't really play.

Again, all from memory here, so I'll be double checking to see if I'm accurate.

Tyson Brit played a lot. He was a big part of the really good 1995 team and an even bigger part of the bad 1996 team.

Price actually never played again after XU (at least D1 it appears). He averaged 13 / 6/ 2 with 1.8 steals and .8 blocks as a soph. What the hell happened to that guy?

I was wrong on Brit. Played in 78 games. Stats from back then are incomplete. averaged 4 PPG

Odia averaged 13 minutes in 71 games over 3 seasons for Oregon. 2.3 PPG and .8 APG. BUST

BY the way, I just happened to notice Pat Kelcey's stats before he transferred to XU.

He started 22 of 28 games at Wyoming as a Freshman. Played 24 MPG. 2.3 PPG and 3.3 APG and he shot 26% from the field. YIKES

One thing that is clear is that the transfers in are a lot better than the transfers out. Even more so if you don’t count Dez who was not a voluntary transfer.

Hard not to start j mart. Could have used his defensive toughness down low- though he was a little inconsistent at times.

Fair enough. Both Austin and Kyky had the similar issue at times of recklessly dribbling into traffic and losing the ball.

Dontarius James was the top scorer (17 ppg) at Jacksonville this past year. IÂ’m happy for him. A nice kid and team player who looked like he was starting to gain a lot of confidence at X, but you kind of just saw he was never likely going to be given enough opportunity to shine at X. His coach got fired and he his in the portal.

Thought I saw someone post that James was in the portal in another thread I looked it up and saw he had a pretty good year.

He will need to call on his recruiting skills to keep a roster that on paper, has all 14 players returning. But nine of them have entered the NCAA transfer portal, including forward Dontarius James, the ASUN's leading scorer (17.5 points per game), guard Kevion Nolan (16.6 per game during an injury-plagued season) and forwards Bryce Workman (10.3 points, 6.4 rebounds per game) and Tyreese Davis (11.5 points, 4.3 rebounds per game)

Did anyone mention Mo Brantley from 1990 sweet sixteen team? I could be wrong with years and team. I believe he made an appearance in the NBA which would have put 4 players from that team in the NBA.

Forgot why he left... do you remember?

Also -is this guy charged with 1st degree murder for killing a man by striking him in the head with a shovel the same Maurice Brantley? Brantley. Finn. How many players who left the team early went on to a life of crime?

Not sure but vaguely recall him being dismissed from the program. Don’t recall where he finished his college career either. The picture in that article appears to be him. Sad situation all the way around. He definitely would have helped in his following season but obviously was better for X that he moved on to another program.

Could be the guy. Maurice Brantley started for X as a freshman and, as I recall, grabbed a huge rebound off a missed Georgetown free throw to seal the 1991 biggest win in Xavier history. He was from Michigan and a very athletic 6'6" small forward. The guy was, unfortunately, a bad actor. Gillen kicked him off the team his sophomore season after several incidents. One I clearly recall was when Brantley punched a Butler player in the handshake line after the game. Also, wasn't attending class and engaging in all the usual shenanigans. He was trouble. He was from Michigan. And, he would be the same age today (49) as the the Maurice Brantley charged for murder.

That’s right. I was at that game Georgetown game but forgot he made that play. What a beautiful game. I also forgot about the Butler incident. I do remember liking his toughness on the court. Too bad he was so troubled - very sad how his life turned out.
