Agreed- I would be in favor of bringing a veteran guy into the coaching room. If Mack doesn't see the value of keeping you after his team missed the tournament, I am not sure he is a guy you rush to bring in. Travis and Murray could have a good relationship though.

You have to bring value and a skill set........right now Steele needs a veteran guy to help with X's and O's and player development

How more veteran do you need? Luke has been an assistant forever. He can’t be worse then Dante Jackson. I do hope Luke gets a head coaching job. I’m sure a team will take him on the fact his dad is BILL.

But in no way am I pimping Dino. There is zero connection to him, Steele and most importantly Christopher. Dino was here with Skip 20 years ago. Nada connection since. Nah. I know there is a narrative here that Steele is stubborn, but I’ve just assumed posters say that because he isn’t doing what they want him to do. The only meaningful example I can recall either way was when one of the assistants told Steele to put Jones in at the end of the game where he hit the winning shot. People here were enthused he was so willing to heed an assistant, especially at the most crucial point of a game. How quickly we forget, I guess?

Hold on... Our million dollar HEAD coach is supposed to bring someone on staff to tell him what to do? I’m sorry, but only a ninsecurely self-aware, incompetent weirdo would consider this. Maybe he’s in over his head here, but how about he carry himself with a little self-pride instead, and run the team as he’s been tasked with doing? Then if things don’t work out, he can be on his merry way.

As far as the staff goes, perhaps he needs better people around him; I have no idea. I know Johnson and Hayes were highly regarded at their previous gigs. But if the idea is to bring in a seasoned guy to cover all of Steele’s perceived deficiencies, I’d say we’re much better served by replacing him with a head coach without so many deficiencies... Are we really claiming our coach doesn’t understand Xs and Os? Then I’d say our real problem is Greg Christopher , and he should never be in charge of hiring a head coach ever again.

The best take information from many sources to make decisions. The more good data you have, the better the decisions. If Steele, or any leader, is afraid to employ someone that may know more than them, then that's a problem.

This isn't a "he has to do what he says" question - it's a question of getting the best information to make a decision. And based on his decision making, he absolutely could use some upgrades.

Like I've always said, at the end of the day, it's Steele's program. The trajectory of it is highly based on the decisions he makes. "Putting in work" is important, but his decisions over the course of his tenure absolutely have the biggest impact on team success/failure. He can't hide from that.

Agree. The HC is the CEO of the team. He doesn't have to be the expert in any one space - he just has to know how to find the right answers from all the sources available to him. The more information the better.

Surround yourself with the best to be the best. That is the secret. I never forgot many years ago when I graduated and was looking to get a job - I was able to meet with the owner of a very successful company. He said to me, “The secret to success in business is easy: hire people who can do some important skill you need better than you or anyone you currently have employed.” Eventually those people may move on but not before they make things better for you- and by that time you will have learned how to do the things that made them so special.

Whole-heartedly agree. If you're in charge you call the shots, sure, but a good leader facilitates discussions and ideas that help the team grow as a whole. One of the biggest mistakes in life in general, not just sports is thinking that you know everything. The tricky part is having the self-awareness to actively see candidates with a skill set better than someone else you may have on staff, or even yourself. There's plenty of brilliant college basketball minds out there with vast experiences. I thought when Juwan Howard announced Martelli that it was a genius decision.

I agree with this two, think Matta would be elite in that type of a role but just don't see him doing that. Though it'd be perfect for him after he openly complained about the corruption in college basketball with recruits, money, and all that jazz. Though, if we were swinging for the fences and going with an all-time dream hire in that role, I'd have to say John Beilein would be my top choice, but hell will freeze over before that happens.

fine, but I was not speaking to whether he should bring in good people. Of course he should. I was simply responding to the notion that he needs to bring someone in to tell him what to do, which of course he should not.

i disagree with part of your premise... Many people, including very bright individuals, can’t/won’t make a good decision, even if they have all the right information. And are you saying that steele is making poor decisions because he is receiving poor information? 1. I never said head coach
2. Murray is available - Steele may be interested in reconnecting - though it’s the bigs that we may need more help landing and developing
3. My bigger point though is the administration ought to do everything to make sure X is back dancing next year and getting back to the days of the deep runs. This is no time to worry about coach Steele’s ego.

If I were Christopher I would be telling Travis, “Missing the dance next year isn’t good for you or me so we need to get you the best support available- someone who has been a consistent winner. Maybe we reach out to Thad or someone similar and see if they might be interested in offering some assistance - whether that be as a full time assistant or if that is not possible then in whatever capacity they feel they can offer the type of help need it most. Someone who you can lean on to help you with those little details that when tweaked are often the difference between loses and wins. Someone who has had success with finding chemistry in lineups that create space and great movement. Someone who has proven strategies to get players to the line much more frequently. Someone who is a mastermind with presses and when best to use them. Someone who can help tweak who should be shooting and where they should be shooting it (i.e. finding their sweet spot) and when they should be shooting and how confident, squared and in rhythm they are when they take the shoot. Even someone who can help fine tuning the strategy for timeouts: when exactly to call them, what play is most effective during that timeout to give you and advantage and what words are most effective during that particular timeout for that specific situation.”

Simply put, Christopher needs to get across that he is done hearing Travis talking about how the team needs to get better. It is now time to get the type of help that will help you perfect each detail that needs perfected so we can go dancing next year. Otherwise, some tough decisions just might have to be made after next season.”

I’m jealous , I’m bald. I have a pony tail if I could.

Look. Matt Jennings doesn't just develop his own training regimen for the players. The Head Coach sets it and Matt Jennings carries it out. If Travis wants something done, all he has to do is tell Jennings. This whole thing that Jennings can't train didn't exist with Blueitt, Macura, Reynolds, Love, and a host of others... it seems to be the directive from the Head Coach has changed. There's a lot of "bucks' being passed here to Matt Jennings.

You said Thad Matta, I was responding to that.

Was Murray on a final 4 staff that I missed?

I don't disagree though that Christopher should light a fire under Steele to consider his options for the assistants.

Was Murray on a final 4 staff that I missed?.

Actually, my original post stated, “Final for or Elite Eight.” Murray was part of an Elite Eight team while at X. Not saying he is “The answer” just a possible option.

When you start blaming your strength and conditioning coach for team not living up to expectations you have officially lost it.
