Word on the street is Nate is thinking about returning for one more year. That’s all I know right now. Stay tune

He did comment on Ramsay leaving- "Going to miss you brother"...seems like an odd thing to say if he was Nate was planning on leaving.

Great...Note is great shooter and can play defense. He also seems like he is good team player.

Ok, this helps.
The returning roster still (and even more) is pretty crowded at the 2/3 positions, but this should at least provide a little more appeal for a Transfer Big (or 2) to join.

I hope this is true. Should we hold our breaths?
Some player will be injured next year. Might as well get a backup point guard in case of emergencies. Need 2 post transfers.

Definitely good to keep one of the best shooters in the NCAA. He helps spread the floor a bit, good to see him come back. He also had good cuts on the baseline while others were driving, from what I remember. Johnson is an instance where getting transfers pays off.
Find a big or two now and things start to look better going into the season.

I'm guessing one of the bigs Steele may "land" is already on the roster and everyone wanted more minutes for him last season. What a weird year.

Nate's return makes us into an NCAA Tournament team if we can get a serviceable big man (which may well be Stanley). Johnson may be saving Steele's career today.

Good news, but as of right now, this team is still no different - but a year better.
If Scruggs comes back, it's another piece, but we're still going to have the same issues without 1-2 power guys in the paint.

This is huge. This gives us a fairly strong and credible back court with dwon and Nate with kunkel/wilcher as rotation guys and Colby as guard/forward.
Free should come in next year better and I think if we can play more of a four than a five he can be all big East.
It’s imperative we get a legit big. We should have enough offensive fire power that just a dude that can clean up boards and protect the rim is fine.

I agree with you on the front court, but I think this thinking sells a bit short the improvement we could see from Odom and Jones especially, as well as Wilcher, with their first real offseason in the books. That could be more magnified than ever considering what the deal was last summer.
Definitely still some serious holes to work through don't get me wrong.

did we ever hear anything definitive about his injury? What caused it? Was it something he dealt with in past that could be an issue again going forward?
Felt so weird that the team said he was done for the season and that was it. I miss the days when there were legit reporters covering the team who would have found that out.

I disagree with the Ben Stanley comment. Xavier needs a big who can compete with the front courts of the Big East. Do you expect Ben Stanley standing at 6’6 to play the 5? I hope not or next season will be similar to this season? I like Ben but he would get eaten alive on the boards. Xavier needs a true 5 and Ben Stanley is not that person.

Yeah, a 6'10"+ big man that can play some post defense and rebound is a major off season need. If we can find that somewhere then we have a legit chance at being decent next year. Assuming competent coaching (which is not a given).
How good is the big from I think Moeller, that picked IU over X. Maybe he would change his mind, now that Miller is canned.

He may end up being good, but he's got a lot of muscle and weight to put on. He'd be abused in the paint right now in the Big East.

stanley looked like an excellent offensive player and against Seton Hall and Creigton scored more than a point a minute. Will be a contributor but not at 4 unless other teams go small. He looks like kind of a positionless player if healthy.

Excellent News!
Not that I had any informations, but I had posted a little while back that I thought he’d come back. Nate can change the fate of this team next season. His return plus one new big who can take up space, defend and rebound would make the team a legit threat.

This is pretty much a post I had before this season began. My biggest concern by far going into the season. Had a gut none of the other bigs beside Free were going to be close to playing at a Big East level- including Carter. Strange that Steele couldn’t see it.

Carter has a role to play just not the one he was asked to do. He provides a lot of heart and toughness which is good for 5-10 minutes a game. Sometimes more. Carter isn’t the team’s problem.
Remind’s me of Devine in Rudy, “I wish God put your heart in some of my player’s bodies”.

It's not great that is remains our biggest concern...
Maybe a good coach can gameplan around the lack of a true big, but Steele hasn't seemed to crack that code so far.

How many games do you think Xavier would have won if Carter would have scored on average 10-12 points a game and shot over 30% from three? My guess is 4. So 17-4.

This is why I don't understand X didn't go 4 out 1 in with a person that could produce offensively. The counter to that is always something about rebounding or defense, I really don't think there would have been much of a drop off there and certainly would have had more PPG.

Yeah. I assume it's a whole different rebounding philosophy: Team rebounding vs relying on the front court to grab the majority of the boards. I agree that Carter wasn't exactly hauling in the rebounds though, so what do you have to lose?
When we played teams with decent bigs it felt like we got exploited both in rebounding and defense, but we were never able to use a speed advantage to make them pay defensively when we were on offense. We didn't seem to be able to keep even mediocre bigs (Golden from Butler, for example) from scoring in the paint. It seemed like not only did we lack size, but the players we had were not consistently able to get into position to keep the bigs from getting a post feed down low.

I think it's because we were so reliant on Freemantle, so he couldn't be much help defensively or he'd be in foul trouble right away.

And honestly, we need to amass as much talent as we can. If Steele proves to be worth anything he should be able to parse out who works well with who and how to divvy up time.
We can't turn down great talent bc we are afraid someone will transfer.

If Travis doesn't win next year, he's gone (and honestly, Wilcher would probably transfer then anyway), so it wouldn't be a hard decision for him to take a known-product from 3 and on D versus a good prospect who needs to develop more.
I still think Wilcher would have an important role off the bench next year even if Nate came back, so not sure I understand the transfer chatter

One of the most difficult injuries for a basketball player ....not to recover from in a civilian sense...but to play basketball without further injury, since you put high loads on a damaged bone.

Might even be cut to 2 (19-2), if we add that he grab just a few more boards and been responsible for just one more stop per game. Shows how badly we need another BE level Big.
Have to ask, is everyone still super excited about Nate Johnson coming back if it means CJ Wilcher ends up in the portal?
1. I am ecstatic!
2. Absolutely doesn’t mean Wilcher is going anywhere. He is just a freshmen and he will get his minutes. Don’t understand why people think having more talent is a bad thing. Most players are going to but into playing a little less of that means a greater chance for the team get into the NCAA tournament and have a deep run.
The only players who will transfer are the ones who are not getting on the court much (like Ramsey) or those increasingly losing minutes (like Kyky). I wish Kyky would have stuck around but then I wouldn’t stick around if my playing time decreased as much as his- especially if I knew I could move on and likely earn a starting job elsewhere (maybe not quite at the BE level- but then maybe it is possible).

Sorry... Rumors, as in, Scruggs is staying and Wilcher is leaving? Transfer crap, as in, players leaving, constant chatter about who this year’s free agents should be, and now conjecture young players will transfer any time our best upperclassmen stick around. I guess they were two separate parts of a larger thought.

Okay. I guess I just haven’t heard anything about CJ leaving from anyone. Xavier lost the two guys I expected and do not expect any more. Jones and Odom started this year and will start next year. Wilcher will be the 6th man if he doesn’t start at the 4. They will all be fine.

They don't and I dont think it has a ton of impact but it is still less mins for Wilcher most likely. If Scruggs and Johnson both come back it can shift guys like CJ or even Johnson to other positions if we play small and take away time from CJ.
Anyway there is no reason to believe anything about CJ considering leaving other than one guy on a message board who just threw it out there and hasnt addressed it since.

If I was CJ Wilcher I would really like my chances of playing a lot of minutes under Steele. He is a wing with good size who can shoot. This staff loves those guys. Hell, Steele might even play him at the 5.

I said there was no reason to believe it, because there wasn't.
You obviously had some inside info but you didn't present it that way. You presented it as a hope you it doesnt happen. Which is kind of weird since you clearly had some inside info. Plenty of others have before and presented it as this is what I am hearing and no one asks them where but they take it more seriously.
I also never asked you how you knew as you never even said you knew anything.
