View Full Version : unintended consequence of Kunkel eligible early (and Stanley before schedule)

Kunkel (who looks good and dynamic) was eligible earlier than expected and moved in to line before Kyky..Marquette shot cemented that (he is a good athletic player no doubt) but it put Tandy way behind the 8 Ball (with Nate and even Wilcher and Colby coming on). No Kunkel, Tandy stays warm and moves in with Nate's injury and Paul and Nate leave at year end leaving Kyky and Kunkel as shooting guards. Stanley eligibility was a surprise and he averaged double fig against Seton Hall/Creighton(both losses) but may not have been in game shape against almost animalistic St Johns leading to injury . Him not in gives Griffin more run (and we all know he needed to play 15 min a game). God only knows what happens now and the fact that some say Zach did not look happy after game is a little scary. No answers, just a thought that all that glitters is not gold. I swear the night was sealed last night when there was a lay we had great ball movement, an offensive board, kick out to Colby after 5 passes(with announcers wowed with our movement)and ball goes out after being 90% down. The other dagger the Golden weak side outback after we get a stop, if the ball even nicked the rim there is no putback

I kind of thought the night was sealed when Carter drove left and sort of chucked the ball in the direction of the basket with his right hand. No, not the first time he did that. The second time.

I know I have said it before but I feel bad for Carter to be put into that position. During the game last night, it was pretty obvious in the second have that Butler’s goal was to let Carter beat them. Carter like previous games should not have been out there as much as he was because he just isn’t at the level. However, the coaching staff for whatever reason believed that he was the best option even after Carter started chucking prayers at the basket. I have lived through Najiball and I have hopefully seen the last of Carterball. I fear about what kind of ball we will see next year.

What concerns me is the long-lasting damage that is being done to the Xavier brand. This could quickly snowball into a long downward spiral. I don't think the end of the regime could come to soon. It needs to be firmly established, not just among the Xavier faithful but to college basketball and college basketball hopefuls that mediocrity and what is quaintly referred to as 'rebuilding' are not acceptable at XU.

Carter probably wishes he stayed at OU and averaged a double-double in obscurity.

Carter probably wishes he stayed at OU and averaged a double-double in obscurity.. Guys like Hankins and Max Struss are freakish athletes (esp for being caucasian) and do one thing well in addition and can move up and shine. Carter was an all around pretty good player but I know from limited experience playing with college players that all the head fakes, flip shots, up and under seem to disappear when 5 div 1(or in my case 2 and 3) athletes are on the court. Also he was not even a 5 at OU and all he could do was body up, raise his hands, make a small vertical jump and hope for a miss by his opponent. Honestly if he had played less and ran the court harder he could have gotten some trailing baskets and put backs, the minutes were too much.

The minutes were too much!
The mistakes were too many.
The common sense reason Steele played Carter so much and at the end
Well, there just aren’t any.
