3pm, up against the NFL, Brilliant programming. Kind of a , "yeah, we'll show it because the contract says we have to" move.

It seems that for the past several years the Shootout has been scheduled at a time that was totally moronic. Playing it on the first Saturday in December is a bad idea because that's when all the conference championship football games are, and it's usually a busy day for college basketball as well. Last year the game was actually going on while UC's football team was playing against Memphis for a chance to go to a NY6 Bowl. Now it's up against NFL football on what I'm assuming is a crucial day late in the season (I don't watch the NFL, so...). This game does have the ability to move the needle nationally, but only a little bit. It needs its own spotlight. If you put it up against big time college football championship games or the NFL, it will get buried. Why not play it at..I don't know...literally ANY OTHER WEEKEND!!!

Whoever the UC coach is screws goats.

Is UC any good?

Probably not. But...maybe. Brannen is a good coach, especially when he has the players he wants for his system. UC hasn't had run anything like what he wants to do for the past 40 years or so. While they have a lot of new players, they may be the types of players that Brannen can use for his system in a way that's better than what he had last year. I don't think they're quite there yet, but they may end up being better than what people think.

The game is on at a moronic time because it's on ESPN and they have finally realized that Clifton Community College is a mid-major.

And last year, why the hell would Fox care about what was really a meaningless mid-major football game being played by Clifton? They could care less.
Borecat football measures zero on the rating scale. Nobody outside of their little bubble cares a lick.

Based on when it was on, what it was on, and the overall number of viewers I think it was painfully obvious that The Shootout was the game that Fox didn't really care about. That's pretty much what my complaint is. No one cares, and they should, because it's a game that could have/would have national appeal.

Seriously, though...

What the hell happened to The Shootout?? It used to be a big deal. There was a narrative that it was one of the biggest rivalries in all of college basketball. I always kinda thought that was overstating it a little bit, but it was at least a big enough rivalry to garner that kind of statement and have people not think it was ridiculous. It wasn't THAT long ago when the game was on the Fox flagship network, it got over a million viewers, and ended up being one of the most viewed college basketball games of that month. Now, it's buried on one of the busiest college sports days of the year (or I guess this year, on the following day during peak NFL viewership), the viewership is way down, and no one cares.

What the hell happened to it??

I'm not saying it needs a whole week of national coverage dedicated to it like Duke v UNC seems to get, but doesn't it at least deserve a time slot on a flagship network at a time when people will actually watch it??

This might have something to do with it. Xavier as the little team that could taking down top ten caliber UC had national appeal. Xavier as a regular top 25 program continuing to take down UC just isn't as fun to watch. People have just kind of moved on.

I think it will always be a big game in Cincinnati (at least I hope so), but it may be a long time before it garners any real national attention again the way that it used to. Especially if they keep playing it at a time when there are other games going on that the nation understandably cares a lot more about.

Honestly it is nice when people nationally recognize the game but I dont really care how it is perceived nationally. It will always be a huge game in Cincinnati. There is not another single game with the feel of the shootout and the teams records are totally irrelevant. By far my favorite Xavier game to go to every year when it is at Cintas.

Its tough. Growing up we were the underdog going against Huggins and UC. It was always a blast- the hate was there and built up, game day was electric.

Then- Xavier started becoming better program and it was more of a hatred than anything. F'n Mick....him and his brother were so easy to hate. Even more than Huggins. At least Huggins had some top ranked teams, Mick had nothing to back him up. King JP getting attacked by Mick in the handshake line? Thats gold. But with Mick, the rivalry to me was always X vs Mick.

He is out of the picture now. Unfortunately, I think it will slowly turn into more of a Dayton type rivalry for me without the hate.

*Though didn't UC coach whine about the game being played this year on twitter? Some huge deal about how unfair it is and we should add games or play it at US bank instead? What an idiot- who tried hard to be just like Mack in that Louisville Kentucky thing.

Yeah, the hate has definitely faded. Back in the Huggs Thugs days when his team came out in their black unis the boos raining down on them in the Gardens and then Cintas was like a jet engine!

I couldn't tell you the name of one player on the UC roster. I wonder if their fans care any longer? Being stuck in that lame conference has to play a part in their apathy. But it's 9:05 a.m. and UC still sucks!

Actually it’s been really quiet here in the Cincy area this year. I think most people have a lot more on their mind than this game. Doesn’t help that fans won’t be there and that all of the usual pregame talk shows, contests, promotions won’t be happening because of all the civil mandates. Also the fact that UC just opened their season last night, and that both teams have 2/3rds of their rosters made up of new players, means that there isn’t much “local” flavor to the game. UC only has one player (Davenport!) who is local. X only has Miles and Kunkel as locals. Neither team has a real “star” either, so it can’t be hyped as s showdown between two players. Even the coaches seem to get along pretty well!

I miss the old days when there was blood in the streets and on the court! LOL

In general I think we all have probably overestimated the national significant of the Crosstown Shootout. It's really only a big deal nationally when both teams are ranked. People here in NJ, even Big East basketball fans, don't really even know about it I have found. It's more of a regional rivalry.

It was so fun to beat Huggins because of his larger than life personality on the sidelines. He's mellowed out a ton, but he used to be a trainwreck with the refs and his players. It was just so entertaining watching him get mad, and so fun to beat. Also, UC had great teams with some high caliber ballers. UC now - eh, they're ok.

And if I'm being honest, I've come to greatly respect his coaching ability. Definite HOF'er and probably top 10 current coach. He wins everywhere.

I will never say that about Cronin.

I think we all have to admit that we liked being the little engine that could, against the big bad UC teams. Now X is the big bad team against the little engine that can’t. I don’t think that the UC fans have grasped the idea that they are no longer an elite program and don’t get elite players. It galls the hell out of them that X plays in a bigger league and is a better program. It galls them so much so that they can’t admit it! So they try to downplay the rivalry by saying that it’s a bigger game for X, than it is for them. That it’s no longer a highlight of the season. That it’s no longer important. They’ve done all they can to downplay the game and to reduce the hype, so that it doesn’t hurt so much when they lose. And to be completely honest, it doesn’t feel quite as good as it used to when X won, because now I kind of expect it.

I still wonder if the BE plays any role in this? Anyone know? Or is the BE policy follow your own local health department guidelines?

I get the BE can't override local guidelines in terms of making them less strict but they could be more strict and have a conference policy that states it is 14 days still. Maybe they dont have a policy though. So if one PA choses to keep 14 days and Ohio goes 7-10 an XU player exposed misses less time than a Nova player. But then is an Ohio player allowed to travel to play @Nova if PA doesnt adopt the CDC's new lower quarantine option?

Seems dicey for potential BE teams to have different guidelines.

Food is brought to their rooms. They are not in their normal housing. I would assume they monitor themselves, as they are grown adults, who I would think would be pretty apt to following the rules set forth so not to jeopardize their college basketball season.

I think Kunkel will have the biggest impact for tomorrow as he has college experience already and has been actively practicing with the team unlike the other two.

I think Wilcher and Jones might play a few minutes but I wouldn't hope for any major impact and I also wouldn't be surprised if neither see the floor tomorrow.
