Very little love for X at the Big East Media Day. It's very hard to understand how Charlie Moore was selected 1st team All BE over Paul Scruggs and our Musketeers are predicted to finish 7th. Plenty of motivation material here.

Scruggs should have been 1st team but it really doesn't mean anything to me. I think he'll be 1st team @ the end. Yeah, we have a lot of work to do with the players and the coaching. Hopefully, we can sneak up on people.

Are we really that bad? 7...out of 11?
That doesn't give me warm and fuzzy feelings for the season. FWW, I think we're in the 3-5 range.

Does Steele get a pass for this year? I don't think he should.
Does Steele get a pass for this year? I don't think he should.
And you are certainly entitled to that opinion. It sounds a little like the Cleveland Browns style of management, but you are entitled. Nobody get a clean PASS, but he gets more time in my opinion. Give him a chance to get his own guys and grow a bit into the #1 seat. This last year has been batshit crazy. I wouldn’t want to be judged by how I handled this mess (UNLESS I killed it!).

A single ball hasn't been tipped and people are wondering if Steele get a pass for the season? This season will be unlike any other due to the pandemic. Steele would have to have a historically bad season to be booted. I'm not privy to the athletic budget but I assume it's taken a hit since last season with virtually no in person revenue since last March and a fraction on the horizon. Pandemic, Unusual Finances, and the potential for less practices and players being out because of illness..... buckle up. It's going to be one of those unpredictable seasons... It's the type of Season where the South West Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma Spiders win a National Championship. Why not us?
Unless a coach is an absolute disaster day 1, they deserve at least 4 and more likely 5 years to show that they can do. Steele has obviously not been what we hoped but we have still only seen 2 years. If after 5 years the body of work isn't the caliber that Xavier is paying for then he should be fired. Before then its premature and unprofessional. What you can not do is be like Marquette. Wojo has done nothing but schedule cupcakes and use future recruits to secure himself multiple contract extensions. I don't care what the recruits may look like for year 6. If after 5 years the results don't represent what we expect then he needs to go, no excuses.

Travis Steele in my opinion did as good of a job as anyone could have with the team he inherited. In fact, IMO he exceeded in the win column. He had no outside shooting, none. That makes game planning against X that much easier. Plus he was dealing with issues from players from day 1 who weren't bought in and just wanted to showcase themselves.

I have, at times, been disappointed with Steele's leadership, game prep. + in-game decision making over the first two seasons. But, clearly to me, he has shown he has some talent for his profession like, for example, recruiting. This year, as noted by Muskie, seems like it is setting up to a very strange one. So, I for one, will not encourage the "fire Steele" threads this season. Steele, while he (admirably) has been with the Xavier program for awhile, was promoted quickly and may not have been fully prepared for the job. That happens often in all manner of professions. So, I expect him to grow into the job and I think we will see signs of that this year.
I don't know what the standard will be at the end of five years to justify a contract extension but it starts, I think, with March Madness appearances and some minimal amount of success. Other than that, I haven't thought about enough to quantify. But, I'm interested in what others think. If Steele gets the hook after five years should he not perform, what does performance look like to others on this board?
Schedule released today; Oakland, Bradley, Toledo 11/ 25,26,27. EKU 11/30 Tenn Tech 12/2, UC 12/6, OK 12/9. Prov 12/12, SH, 12/15, DP 12/18, Marq 12/20. Creighton 12/23. Not a cakewalk by any means.

I think this year is important for Steele. He's gotta deliver progress and show he has this program headed in the right direction. I give him a pass of sorts the last two years. This is his team with almost all of his recruits.

I want to see evidence of a system in place -even if it needs work - and evidence that the coach - NOT THE PLAYERS - is running this team. Then, I want to see improvement over the course of the season. Hopefully, wins come, but last year, even though they finished above .500 was PAINFUL to watch and just seemed to get worse.
All I know is Marquette is the cautionary tale. Wojo is under contract for 4 more years and this has been his resume thus far. And Frankly, Marquette has deeper pockets than we do so its pretty insane what hes gotten away with.

Losing those last three games was a bummer. Winning just one of them would've been an accomplishment. Either PC or Butt would've been great. 20-11 is way better than 19-13.

The bad apples have left the orchard, Naji and Q. Steele was over a barrel, without them may we win 10 games, with them we won 19, but we were mostly a hot mess. I think we'll be much more fun to watch, and will play as a team, and Win.

The heat is on. Three seasons with no NCAA March Madness is not acceptable. These are the dues to pay, playing in an elite conference. X needs to have a top 20 team at least every 4 years.
I think 2021-22 season will have the best skill with experience and probable top 10 ranking. We will hopefully see early signs of greatness this year. Getting all the wrinkles out. It may be similar to Providence's season last season. They started very very slow. They got hot with play during the last 10 games.
We shall see.

Nobody made the tournament last year. So Steele has only missed one year, his first season with a trash roster. Programs must give head coaches 5 seasons at minimum to bring in their guys, create culture, and prove themselves. Travis has had some ups and downs but he is building a very good roster and I think we will be getting back to where we are accustomed very soon.
Wojo was mentioned in the thread. He has little to show at his tenure at Marquette. Same with Archie Miller at IU. Despite little results they are still employed and are not getting heat from their administrations.

This is the rational take that most of us seem to have, I have faith that Steele will continue to improve, and I want to see a roster make up of purely just his guys before going through another coaching change. All that does is bring instability, and another adjustment period for a few years, it's not a fun time. I think with the recruiting we're setting ourselves up for a pretty special season next season, and this season in midst of a lot of craziness in the world should be interesting. All I want to see really is that we improved from whatever the hell that style of play was last year, cut down stupid decisions, and grow throughout the season. If that leads to the tournament, I'll be stoked, if not, hopefully there's something to build off of at least.
Side bar though, is Archie really not on the hot seat at Indiana? I genuinely don't know, I figured a program like that wouldn't be too happy with not being "elite" as they are used to. Is it because of the buyout and finances, or just they still have faith?

Honestly when was the last time IU was considered elite? They made the final four in 2002, but prior to that they haven't been past the second weekend since 1993. They have 4 national championships all before 1987. The last three coaches prior to Archie had not been able to restore the program among the elite. Mike Davis, Kelvin Sampson, and Tom Crean. Archie is in year 4 with no conference titles, NCAA tournament wins, and has a .561 win % and his seat is as cool as a cucumber.

I believe that they are still thought of as an top program by many fans. But, how they are thought of probably depends on what age group you are. No matter how we might view them though, they are still a “name” to many in the press. They still have a huge fan base in a state where basketball is king. They still play in one of the top college basketball conferences and usually are seen as a threat to win the conference championship. They still recruit (usually) at a top level. They are still a program that is attractive to coaches and players.
I guess it might depend on what is meant by “elite”, but I’m also not sure it really matters if they are truly “elite” or not. As long as the fans, boosters, and administrators there think they are, they will still be disappointed if they aren’t winning national championships.
