Technically, it starts this week with the Safeway Open out in the Bay Area. Of course, I can't see too many big names in that field as they try to rest between the Tour Championship and the US Open.

And BTW, it's nice to see the US Open back on NBC where it belongs (albeit just this year).

Damn - he's up to #55 this week. Didn't think he would be that high after what was frankly a lackluster season compared to recent years. That will at least keep him in the WGC events at a minimum.

Need top 50 for Masters, unless some other exemption applies.

Edit: he was 44th last year, which I assume got him in this year's Masters.

I had a tough time with picks for this week but this is what I have:
Simpson 25-1
Morikawa 16-1
Berger 28-1

GoMuskies
09-17-2020, 10:05 AM
Did anyone get Davis Thompson at like a trillion to 1? Despite his nine hole lead, he's probably still available at approximately 1 billion to one.

I have a Morikawa as my main bet also at 16-1. Small Kokrak bet at 150-1.

The 10th hole is featured at USOpen.com if you want to catch a glimpse of Jason hitting a shot live.

And....McIlroy, Scott and Rose are all at #6, so they're ignoring the other two featured holes. They literally showed those guys walking down the 6th fairway instead of showing actual play at the 10th. Annoying.

If anyone knows Andy Pope, tell him there's a Muskie nearby who has some beers with his name on them. Or just send him to the party house behind the 6th tee and tell the homeowners their Wichita Xavier friend sent him. He'll be welcomed right in.

Congrats Jason............ Such a small margin of error on the tour.

When I consider that I can’t usually go one hole without hitting a bad shot, and he had to go almost a complete round without hitting even one bad shot....whew! Pretty obvious why he’s out there while the rest of us smucks are sitting at home and hacking it on the weekends. Small margin indeed!

I’ve played just about every sport there is and I firmly believe that golf is the most difficult one to really master. In most other sports you can be really good in just one area or skill, and you can be successful. But if you want to win at the professional level of golf, you’ve got to be really good at all the different skills.

Yeah...when he was interviewed after, they asked him about his putting. He said he switched to a '36 and it made all the difference this week.

Sweet drive on 18

That was an unbelieveable adrenaline fueled drive on 18. 342 over a weeping willow, water and bunkers, hits the downslope and only has a wedge to the green. If anybody thought Jay didn't have the stones, that just proved that wrong right there.

As I've said before. The only thing holding him back was the flat stick. Now with his 36" putter, his caddy who can read greens like a book and his newly found confidence, the guy is set up to do really great things. And the mid-30's are the prime age for Tour players so I'm looking for big things from Jay going forward.

I’m pretty sure winning this qualifies him for EVERYTHING the next two years...

It does. An exemption for all events through the 2022-2023 season, two Masters, two US Opens, two PGA's and invires to low field special no cut events that can make Him a LOT of extra money. Those WGC events are like free cash to these guys with only 70 players and no cut. I'm sure a bunch more endorsements too. Already has earned over $15 million on the Tours.

Dude just set the rest of his life up. Congratulations.

Congrats Jason! It has been so much fun watching and rooting for him, understanding what it means just to secure your card each year, seeing his world rianking move well into the top 100, seeing him a couple years ago live at Medinah when I followed him all round and to be right there when he stuck it close and made birdie on 18 to finish 30th in the FedEx cup, and now for his first win.

He's now World Ranked #26.

Not bad for a kid from Warren, OH who now is living in Cleveland. YA, BABY!

I have said the same. If that extra length in the putter shaft, allowing him to stand taller over his putts, really solves his putting issues, he will be a force going forward. Besides his putting over the weekend, I thought his distance control was outstanding. And his caddie is truly a force as well. All good looking forward.

I'm making my not-so-triumphant return to Golf this year after about a 5 year layoff due to having 3 young children, moving for work, etc. Last week I joined a Country Club that is about 5 min from my house, so I'm looking to get back to playing regularly.

I'm excited to watch the Masters, but haven't kept up with the game for a while. Who should I be watching? Last time I followed it was McIlroy, Fowler, Johnson, that were kind of billed as the 'next wave of greats'. Is that still true?

Thanks. Never heard of those guys, so clearly I have some studying to do!

Golf is a frustrating game. I'm not naturally good at it, either. I used to play about 1.5x per week and never really got below a 17 handicap. So far it looks like I have added about 7 strokes to that during my layoff, which is better than I expected. I do play to start off with some lessons this time to hopefully work out my swing flaws. There is nothing like being out on the course though - I've definitely missed it.

The course I have joined has impossible greens (seriously - they are probably too difficult. Lots of good golfers 4-putt) and is a little tight, so it will be a good challenge. But it is 5 min from my house, a lot of my neighbors belong, and they have a great 'under 40' rate that makes it extremely affordable, so that's kind of where I'm stuck playing. Although it's a major challenge coming back.

Forgot to add in some of the young guns.....Matthew Wolff and collin morikawa. Morikawa won the pga this year and I think he is 23? Wolff was second I believe at the us open and has a couple of tourney wins under his belt.

I'm not naturally good at golf either which is frustrating because I consider myself a decent athlete, but I'm a 13 handicap and dont see myself ever getting much better than that because with the young kids, dont really have time for lessons, and then by the time they grow up, I'm going to be too old to suddenly improve by much. However, I love it and enjoy the 18 I get to play every couple of weeks at the country club I belong and enjoy the competition at the club events.

They actually call it an 'advancing professional' rate. It is literally like 1/2 of the normal rate for people over 40. I'm 38, so I have one more year after this one! This particular club has seen some hard times, went semi-public, etc. so they have been looking to build membership.

This year they got 70 new members (people working from home and/or otherwise bored during COVID like myself) so they don't have to open to the public anymore.

It's definitely not a high-end place, but I played with a neighbor of mine who is a member and was surprised at how decent it was for the cost, so I decided to sign up. I'm likely working from home until next summer anyways, so more time to Golf!

I’m hoping to do the same next year after layoff of almost 10 years. A 25% payout in the recession of 2008 resulted in changing from a full membership to social, which only let me play one round each month when I used to play twice a week. After a few years of that I lost my job so golf stopped completely. A bankruptcy followed but I made the final payment on that last month.

I never cleared out my locker at the club, telling them I would be back. I just hope I remember the combination to the lock! The lowest I ever had my handicap was 4. It usually stayed between 5 and 7. No clue what it will jump to when I start playing next year. I’ve been hitting balls at a local range. My swing still seems decent, but I’ve lost a lot of yardage. I’m about 3 clubs different from before.

I'm at $4K with no buy-in and no F&B minimum, which for South Jersey is a steal. Playing a shitty public course around here costs like $85. My family also gets access to a pool (that we probably won't use because we belong to another swim club in our neighborhood) and clubhouse with restaurant that has a big patio etc. I'm not sure how it's so cheap.

Glad to hear you are getting back into it. I would imagine that as a single digit handicap you will probably have more work to get back there, but it'll probably come back quickly. I used to golf with my Dad a lot, and he was single digit for a while - the problem there is that one bad hole can really kill your round!

I'm almost 70 years old and have noticed the same thing regarding lost yardage. In my mind's eye my swing (and swing speed) is identical to what it was 20 years ago so I've convinced myself that the problem is actually with the golf ball. They're making shitty golf balls these days.

I’ll blame the clubs, too! I’m playing with a set of Tommy Armour 845s irons that are probably 20+ years old. I played Wilson Staff Tour Blades for the 20 or so years before that.

My game used to be 5-6 bogeys, with maybe one double each round, with birdies being few and far between. My goal each round was to be one over for each 3 holes, which worked out well at the club I was in. I’d usually bogey 2,4, 9, 10, 13 or 14, and 16 or 17.

Trying to catch a break at Ancer +1800 and Frittelli (S Africans at Augusta) at +3500 this morning. Need some help but I need to root for someone.

Really, it was a short stretch of holes at the end of Thursday's round and the beginning of Friday's round that killed him. He went +2 on 15-18 on Thursday, and +4 on 10-12 (his starting holes) on Friday. So he was -2 on the remaining 29 holes....not great, but certainly respectable.

A friend of mine who is a former tour caddy, told me once that DJ and Paulina both are the most stupid people he has ever known.
He adds that Wayne Gretzky, Paulina's father, agrees. But he says their stupid makes them a perfect match. :-)

So,

Jay Kokrak is playing this weekend at Sea Island. Tees off at 11:10 am Thursday. Probably his last tour event of the calendar year, although he might go to Naples and play at Tiburon in the QBE (formerly Shark) Shootout. That's easy money.

He'll go into the new year with over $2 million in winnings and gets to play in all the special events like the Tournament of Champions and the WGC events. Dude can make himself serious platinum coin this year. GO JAY!

Who cares? He gets to play a game for a living making more money than he will ever know what to do with and bang her. I wish I was that stupid.

And reportedly, for a while, do tons of coke with her too.
More impressive?

Kind of like the couple in "Annie Hall".

Really rough start for Jason. Will be hard to make the cut.

I've been thinking that Jay has been partying too much after his win because he missed the Masters cut, then shot +5 yesterday.

Then lo and behold, today he goes out and shoots -6 on his first 11 holes to now put himself on the cut line at -1. I'm liking his chances to play the weekend with 2 par fives left to play.

Unfortunately, he dropped a stroke and with a cut line at -2, he needs to go 2-under on his last 4 holes.

Two bogeys on the backside knocked him out. Welp. Have fun at the Shark Shootout & Happy Holidays!

Is he playing in this?

Edit sidenote: I played that course last year and it was underwhelming. I’m not a great golfer (10 hcp) and I thought it was pretty easy for what we paid. Couldn’t believe they held an event there

I thought it was about to get even more expensive when I hit a house and cracked the patio door on a par 3. It wasn’t even that bad of a shot, just happened to hit the cart path and ricochet into the glass door. The owner came out and started yelling at me which I never understood since she lived 75 feet from the green I couldn’t be the first person to hit her house. I jokingly told her if her house wasn’t here I wouldn’t have to take a penalty stroke, which she didn’t find funny. Thankfully the repair cost was taken care of by the Ritz which was nice of them but I have no desire to play it again.

Yeah, I've played Tiburon too.

It's really just set up as an exhibition course, which is basically what the Shootout is. A team event not like the usual single guy stroke play event.
Not PGA Tour quality, but fine for the Shootout show.

Kokrak with a 62 (-8) today tied for first. If you missed his near ace, here (https://www.pgatour.com/video/2021/01/14/jason-kokrak-nearly-aces-no--17-in-round-1-at-sony-open.html) is the highlight.

Dunno why he struggled so much on two of the days. It’s a resort course that for these guys is extremely easy. I know today the wind was up a bit but even still.

murray87

And the two rounds where he struggled were a 71 and a 72. How crazy is that??

Winner averaged -5 for four rounds. Everybody but one was under par for the tourney.

But...playing in Hawaii...NICE!

Jason teeing it up this week at Torrey Pines. 1:30 on the North course starting tomorrow. Anyone here played that one?

I played Torrey Pines at a bachelor party 10 years ago. I remember the front 9 but the back is a blur, then “took a nap” on the beach below the course. I vowed to get back to the west coast and play there again, make the trip to Pebble/Spyglass etc. but have yet to do that.

Yes. Back in the 80's. Played both courses, actually. La Jolla is a beautiful part of this planet.
