He did so much for Georgetown, for the boom of the Big East, and probably a lot for ESPN and for the boom of college basketball's popularity throughout the 1980s. I'm kind of in shock over this one.

I always hated those Georgetown teams for whatever reason(s) a kid has to love or hate a college program. But I came to appreciate Thompson when I heard him doing radio for Westwood 1. He was a really good color commentator.

First Lute Olson and now John Thompson. Sad week for the college basketball community.

Eddie Sutton and Lou Henson also recently passed. I was a big Lou Henson and Illini fan as a very young boy. Kind of the first coach I start to think about.
