HBCU school Howard just got a commitment from 5 star Makur Maker. I love seeing a small school beat out bigger schools for a big time recruit. I also like that Mick Cronin lost out on him as well. How’s LA Mick?

This appears to be an offshoot of the social upheaval currently going on. He picked Howard partly because of its status as an HBCU...historically black college or university....and has expressed his desire to have other black 5-star players do the same. It will be interesting to see if some of the major southern universities have players decide against them because of their past histories and the states that they are located in. Truly a case where politics and social considerations are having an influence on sport.

Hmmm. What kind of coaching will he get there? Does their coach have any history of getting players ready for the NBA? And the competition level?

Not the right move in the context of thinking about long term pro career.

There’s a good chance that he never makes it to Howard and will be going straight into the pros, as he is eligible to be drafted and has not taken his name out yet. Even if he does go there, do they play this year? Does he play this one year and then renter the draft? Only time will tell.

Hmmm. Maybe those aren't the questions he's asking, and maybe his life is about more than his "long term pro career."

If he is good enough it will not matter where he goes. How about applauding him for not taking the easiest path and trying to make a difference.

This is a huge win win for Howard as now they are getting more advertisement and exposure than they normally get. They are playing a couple TV games. If that young man does go to Howard, Sportscenter will send a crew to tape is every move. Huge exposure for Howard. Even if he does not play, people are talking about Howard where nobody in sports usually does.

Very cool story. I don't think it will sweep the nation, but of course, it's a great thing for HBCU. Props to the kid.

Time will tell if Makur's decision pays off for Howard, HBCU's and small colleges in-general. Agreed it's a great story and props to the kid for not taking the easy way and committing to UK or Kansas or UNC. Not sure it's gonna be the start of blue-chippers signing with other HBCU's and other small colleges. The money is too good at Texas Tech, Kansas, UK, UNC, etc.

Not to mention, I heard that Makur has a relative on the Howard staff. I'm sure that helped him with his decision. Again, props to the kid for choosing a HBCU.

Yeah, I don’t think it will as well. However, UC had a decommit from their football team who decided to go to Arkansas Pine Bluff a few days ago.
