For those of us who subscribe to The Athletic, Shannon Russell, who we all know goes a great job covering Xavier Basketball, posted on Facebook that she’s been laid off. Apparently, they cut 8% of their staff and those remaining will be getting pay cuts. She was the only reason I paid for that subscription. Guess I’ll be canceling that.

Now I feel bad that I never signed up. I heard often that it was well worth it. There must be some good news out there.........somewhere.

I paid for a year and with no sports did not sign up this summer but sports media is getting crushed. Very good articles by her and I get so mad thinking of things we are losing in this country that I love that were just enjoyable and not metric driven.

Well that is a bummer. I like her a lot. She can’t catch a break. I just subscribed a month ago. But I do have the a Colts and Pacers on the Athltic too. Wonder who will write articles for X?

Thinking maybe X should hire her to write content for them.

Anyone who is canceling know if they prorate the payment across the year or is it a one time payment we are stuck losing ?

Well, that's a real bummer. Have enjoyed her stuff and was so glad she found a spot, until now.
Hopefully she'll land somewhere good for her.
XU's Athletic Dept is looking for a video coordinator and also a marketing assistant.

That's too bad. Part of the reason I subscribe was to read her stuff. If they laid her off and kept Bowden I may cancel.

I wonder if maybe they will bring her back wants sports get going again?

Or maybe they will combine the UC and XU wittier? But that may seem hard to do if he’s has to cover both b-ball teams and football overlaps some as well.

I hope she creates a new platform to post and write. I would pay for her writing and coverage.

They do not. From their website, “You may cancel your The Athletic account at any time – however, there are no refunds for cancellation. Payments are nonrefundable and there are no refunds or credits for partially used billing periods.”

The Athletic has had promotions stating "Half price to subscribe --- Today Only!!!" It has run with the same wording for almost two weeks now. They are seemingly desperate!

you can choose either option when you sign up. it's just cheaper to pay for a year up front.

Yeah I paid for a year up front but noticed the payment went through a month or so ago on the re-up. I signed up about two years ago so I can’t remember anything. I think I’m stuck for another year.

My plan renews every March 14 so I’ve set a reminder on my phone to cancel the subscription in early February next year.

Just looked at my account.
$24.00 first year.
$59.99 renewal in February...primarily for Xavier coverage and Shannon.
Feel like I've been covided.

You can do either. They ran a half price deal a couple of weeks ago so I paid for a year at half price.

amazingly enough i was to renew for $59 in May but my credit card on file was an old one and it did not happen. I am not as big a sports fan as i used to be so a lot of college football, MLB stuff etc went unread. I am sad to find that the younger generation is not that sports mad. In retirement i have substitute taught at an urban school system and except for a little basic NBA there is very little interest among the males. Zero interest in college basketball and recently was with a couple of huge basketball fans (all mid 60s) who said when they went to local high school or small college hoop games the majority of fans "look like us".

I agree with others. I wish X could find a place for Shannon in house. She could do some great sports features as well as features on other parts and members of the University. I doubt the University is in a hiring mode right now. I love the Athletic. I debated cancelling (and perhaps still will). I also really enjoy their soccer coverage which is has been in full swing since leagues have started to play again, so for me it's still something I'm reading daily. I will greatly miss Shannon's contributions.

2 1/2 weeks after Shannon was let go and still no articles on Xavier. I guess the Athletic is cutting back on both there people and who and what they cover.

I haven't read or subscribed to the Enquirer in 5 years. I am tempted to read and subscribe because I like knowing about the X status.

I am not a huge fan of the Enquirer. Do people here read it?

I do. I think it's a terrible newspaper overall, but I think the sports coverage is good. The local politics reporter is also very good.

Agreed. Jason Williams is very good covering local politics. It’s also nice having articles written where you really can’t tell the political leanings of the journalist. Too bad more journalists aren’t like that.

Jeeze, need to hook you guys up with a shit ton of .edu emails to get the "student discount," they wouldn't know any better haha. But it seems the amount of content has decreased on The Athletic, kind of annoying Shannon isn't going to be writing for them anymore since that was some of the best info on X, and by a great writer, I doubt they hire a new person for it any time soon, but luckily it's good for my soccer news and what not too, plus I just love some of the player highlight articles.

sports everywhere getting crushed. I fear that Trevon, JP, and Kaiser ship has sailed as NBA can't get act together so G League a low priority and now another class including high schoolers coming in. I would not want to be a sports management major now

Jason goes after Republicans and Democrats, which is something you don't see too much of anymore.

Yes but Mo Eggar did write about how tragic the 2000 UC season ended so that was at least amusing to read.

I find that fascinating. Maybe you are on to something. My son (9) loves playing basketball on a team, but he isn’t all that interested in watching college hoops or even NBA games. I even have trouble getting him to sit and watch an X game with me. He doesn’t care to watch football either. Maybe there are just too many other things vying for young people’s attention, unlike back when we were kids. I will admit, like you, I have lost interest in most sports too. Other than my son’s games, I only care to watch college hoops, college football and the NFL. Even then, I usually only watch a handful of NFL games a year and only a handful of college games outside of the ones that are either against X or the college football team I’ve been rooting for since I was a kid. I don’t believe I’ve watched an entire baseball game in over 5 years (when My brother and I took my son to a Mets game).

I’d probably go to more games if I still lived where I was raised or if I still lived in Cincinnati. Honestly, it feels like a waste of time watching games unless you really love the team you are watching. I’d rather go see a Broadway/Off Broadway show or even see a movie with the family. Time becomes more and more precious the older you get and you find you start to become choosier about what you do and with whom you do it… exactly why I am determined to get my son to sit and watch some X games with me this year.

From what I gather all the kids would rather watch highlights on youtube of the specific players they like than actually watch an entire game. Or highlights of an individual game. My kids are still too young to really sit down and care about watching a sport on TV, although for the first time my 5 year old sat and watched the majority of an X game with me. However, my brothers were both in town and with us so that he got to watch with his uncles was probably a big part of it. Also we were watching it on delay so we fast forwarded thorough all the commercials!

My 11-yr-old son has zero interest. Zero, zip, zap, zilch. He’s on YouTube all the time. I wish he were watching sports highlights, but nope, never. I don’t know what to do.
