They granted ECU's request to host Marshall a week before college football starts for everyone else so that they could have the weekend themselves to honor the 50th anniversary of the Marshall plane crash. The plane crashed on its way back from a Marshall game at ECU in 1970.

It's good to see that even pea-brains get it right sometimes.

Good call (as I swallow hard).

I remember this well as Marshall was a regular opponent of the now defunct football squad.

Close enough, but not quite right. That was Marshall's first home game. They lost a game or two on the road before coming home to beat Xavier.

Here's the schedule, by the way: https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/marshall/1971-schedule.html

That win over Xavier was sandwiched between a 29-6 loss at Morehead State and a 66-6 loss at Miami (OH). Their only other win was 12-10 over Bowling Green.

Xavier finished the year a healthy 1-9 with its lone win over what must have been a really awful Bowling Green team. 42-27. One of Xavier's losses was to the Quantico Marines.

They had the best half time shows. Use to bring their silent drill team to the stadium.

Who was the drum major back in those days? He was incredible. I have a picture somewhere of my younger sisters with him. Yes, he made bad football a little more bearable.
