Glad to see St. John's get a win over UMASS. They are doing some things, but still struggling from the three.

I think Nova ran out of steam against a really solid Baylor team.

Butler out rebounds Missouri and hits 90% free throws, which made all the difference when both teams shot about equally well.

Tonight:
Butler vs. Stanford for the Hall of Fame Classic. Stanford is only slightly favored. Butler has been playing strong defense overall, so this game could be a toss up.

Depaul goes for it's seventh victory in a row against Central Michigan. This game could actually be a tight one. While CMU's defense isn't that strong, Depaul has a tendency to turn the ball over...a lot. Must be the new thing in the Big East.

Oregon seems to be the heavy favorite against Seton Hall. Really hoping everyone at the Hall is healthy and can win a big quad 1 victory. They were so close with MSU.

Kenpom has 9 BE teams in the top 63 (Depaul 63). Only St John’s is outside at 93. Conference play is going to be a b#*&h this year, but fun to watch.

Stanford isn’t slightly favored tonight. Butler is favored by 3.5.

Also, Seton Hall is only a 1.5 point dog to Oregon.

Impressive game for Butler with a one point win over Stanford, coming from behind in the second half. Baldwin hitting crazy good shots for 22 points.

Depaul beat Central Michigan in a gut check. Down by 18 points at halftime, they outscored CMU by 31 points in the second half. CMU was held to just 25 points in the second half.

The Hall certainly worth a look-in today.

Is San Diego going to give Creighton a game? They seemed to have been on an upward trend...not sure about this year.

Can DePaul take a B1G down on Friday?

Those are the only games that look like they might be competitive to my highly untrained eye.

Of course, after Evansville in Rupp and SFA in Cameron.....

(Why does Duke get to call it's place an indoor 'stadium'?)

sirthought
11-27-2019, 10:44 AM
San Diego State has a highly rated defensive efficiency so far this season, but then again they haven't played many tough teams. I think Creighton can win that one.

I also believe Depaul can edge out Minne.

Seton Hall a 1.5 pt. favorite tonight.

Let's see - a Pirate vs. a Duck...hmm

Arrr - should be a pluckin' jolly game.

sirthought
11-27-2019, 10:05 PM
The Hall leading big in the first half, shooting 58%, 71% from 3.

GoMuskies
11-27-2019, 10:10 PM
So much for leading big. At this rate they'll trail at halftime.

Well, I jinxed them. Right after posting the Ducks went on a run to tie the game.

Myles Powell just wow. Our defense will shut him down...hopefully.

Tie game with a minute to play. SHU really had this one in hand at one point. That point guard for the Ducks is just really good.

Hall craps the bed against the press. No timeouts left...

It's amazing how many rebounds they've given up, considering the size advantage.

sirthought
11-27-2019, 11:41 PM
Wow, they blow a 19 point lead in the second half to lose. That hurts the Big East.

Oregon 19 points down and good come back to win. Looks like the press took Powell out of the game. Coach Steele please take note.

I don’t remember which season it was but several years ago X was getting pressed a lot and not handling it well at all. When asked about this Chris Mack replied “good teams beat a press”. And not only beat a press but score off a press. Seton Hall looked lost against the press the last 2:30 and as a result were out of time outs, leaving (double checks the play by play) Shavar Reynolds(!) taking a forced shot to tie the game. Willard is and always has been underwhelming as a coach in crunch time.

it's not like mack was ever great at breaking the press. his teams always had major problems. breaking the press is somewhat coaching, but it's also very personnel dependent. you've gotta have a good ballhandler. if you don't have one, all the press breaks in the world count for nothing. i suppose there's something to be said for coaching guys that are posed under that pressure, but there's only so much a coach can do in that department

Yes I think that was his point actually. He was asked this after they looked terrible breaking a press if memory serves me correctly. Basically saying “we are not a good team right now.” Obviously personnel matters but press breaks are coached and it is one of the simpler portions of coaching. If you know the press/trap in backcourt is coming there is no reason to turn it over because you have an inherent advantage (4 on 3) on the court.

Yeah I still see it coming down to us, SH and Nova. Nova is young but has some good talent and of course, has shooters. If X wants to pick up another championship, they better figure out how to take care of the ball and play a much more organized and efficient offense. We aren't going to magically start shooting it a lot better. Hopefully KyKy can help some........but getting guys in better spots on the floor (like Naji) where they can exploit their strengths is key.

Yeah, I agree, Nova hasn't looked like they're unbeatable, hell we even got em last year. I think we have a great chance this year, we play really good defense for starters, which is massive. It's definitely all about the stupid turnovers, and if we can pose enough of a threat offensively to win games. We have a roster that's deep, athletic, and should compete in the Big East. Neither Seton Hall or Villanova have looked like clear cut top dogs, so why not us?

Except for Scruggs, who has 1 more for the season (10).

At least Creighton rebounded with a win, so naturally I'm expecting a Texas Tech team that went 0-2 this weekend to knock out DePaul in Chicago next week.

And the Hoyas just laid an egg, losing to UNC Greensboro by 4. They had 2 or 3 shot clock violations and missed a dunk in the closing minutes of the game.

Georgetown loses at home to UNC Greensboro.

Nova and Xavier are the best teams in the Big East, IMO. I’m not a believer in Seton Hall.

Not to mention that Powell has the ability to absolutely take over a game.

I was not that high on them coming into the season, but after watching them a couple of times I am now quite impressed. But I still think that X has much greater depth and that the starters match up pretty well....if X can contain Powell.

Nova and SH are going to be tough to beat. DePaul is really starting off well too. I don't think Butler, although they've started well has enough to compete for a top 3 finish.

none of those games will be easy. remember butler was one of the only big east teams to beat us last year when we were playing well. they'll play us tough

Even St. John's is playing well against West Virginia at home - the Big East would have a 3-0 lead in the Big East/Big 12 battle if this result holds up.

Providence is the only real disappointment so far - Butler and DePaul have definitely been pleasant surprises. St. John's and Georgetown are a little more schizo (especially the Hoyas).

Mike anderson is going to turn out to be a great hire for st. John's. It's just a style of play that is going to appeal to NYC kids and the surrounding area.
