There’s a short lull in the action, so felt it’s a good time to start this tread. I am interested in everybody’s option on something.

Some of us here frequent the Holy Land Big East site. I joined a short time ago hoping to get some inside info on the other BE teams and fan perspective.

A couple of months ago, xusandy started a thread there title “Nova still on top?” that coincided with some standard smack talk on other threads. I made no bones that X, having returned almost all of their key pieces + 2 top transfers and nice incoming class, should be top 1/2 in conference this year and was confused why almost all national pundits were picking Nova, having lost BOTH there senior leaders along with their heavy weighted production. I strongly pointed out that their returning roster is largely unproven and freshman reliant....posted something like “VU is being picked to win the league on name rec alone” referring to their obvious recent Championships.

Well all hell broke loose as a long standing Nova guy there immediately started to belittle our program and totally downplay our accomplishments. Then a group of his merry men jumped in and proceeded to continue the insults to the XAVIER PROGRAM, in the most disrespectful manor possible. You know, an endless barrage of Mid Major garbage...“that A10 flagship nothing but a BE ankle biter” etc.

I took issue and went on to defend our program and proud history by lashing back at the VU POSTERS...NOT THEIR PROGRAM. That’s a BIG DIFFERENCE! However I did say they LOOKED LIKE a half ass AAU team and pretty boys getting slapped around vs OSU, but they did!

Here’s the thing, a few of our board members here chimed in and basically disavowed me. One even saying I’m the kind of fan he can do without.....it’s almost like some don’t know when they’re being insulted. Sorry but these Nova snobs are just bunch of condescending dudes on a fan board. They’re an fan base with an entitled attitude. I for one as a PROUD XAVIER FAN will never be in a ring kissing mood.

It's hard to pick a fight with a 3 time national champ when you haven't reached a Final Four yet.

If we're being honest, we're not what Villanova is. Not to mention, they have probably a top 5 respected coach. Wright is the real deal, and has provided a calming and high-level consistency that's quite impressive for a small private school in Pennsylvania pretty similar in size to Xavier.

I guess what I'm saying is, they deserve and have earned the benefit of the doubt. X has come a LONG way and that rise deserves respect, but Nova is what we're striving to be.

Sorry XUP, got to agree that Nova fans deserve to thump their chests. I'm sure there is a plethora of their fans that are used to owning the Big East so they see it as basically their site and see you (and Xavier in general) as an interloper. And there are always going to arrogant pricks ready to pounce on any semblance of opposition. I'm not sure the Dayton analogy fits, but if a cryer fan gets on here throwing down, I would probably be one of those assholes.

The one other thing to consider is - maybe they are feeling the heat and being a bit defensive.

I read HOH all the time, and the other BE fans almost totally are very complimentary of what X has brought to the league. Some, mostly Nova fans, didn't appreciate your trashing their team this year, and they responded in kind against YOU. For those of you who haven't read that board, go there and you will see that other than responding to Xuperman's claims that Nova shouldn't be the top dog preseason, virtually all league fans are respectful of all their fellow fans and very appreciative of Xavier.

Until Xavier beats Nova on a regular basis and/or is winning national titles like Nova, you have to expect that kind of reaction from their fanbase. You can be rah-rah-Xavier-sis-boom-bah all you want, but it's naive to think their fans won't respond in kind.

This is exactly how I see it.

XUP, I love and respect your enthusiasm and love for Xavier, but I believe you took that thread a little too personally, Gumby and those guys actually do respect Xavier a lot, as do most other BE fans.

The number of "shades" of perception and commentary on message boards could rival the number of shades of paint you see in a Lowe's or Home Depot.

Xavier's program has nothing to be ashamed of, even with its lack of F4's and no NC's. But you don't want to drive into a conversation like that in general, let alone based on early season perceptions and data. Nothing has been proven yet this year. Ironically, once upon a time Oklahoma crushed Nova at the beginning of the season and then Nova obliterated the Sooners in that year's F4 on their way to a NC. Consider that an anecdotal reason for not going down the "we're better than you on paper this time around" road,

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and anonymity allows posters to post some rather amazing things. HLOH has been much more about camaraderie than anything else, and certainly as compared to the nonsense we used to have to put up with on the A10 board.

I say we stay focused on achieving our 2% and the rest of it will take care of itself.

Stay passionate, but don't read too much into the Nova guys trashing Xavier. They were defending their program. And they have the ammunition to do just that.

You didn't do ANYTHING wrong. And the "eggs-avier" comments are simply eggnorant. I'm not insulted by such a feeble response (Child, Please).

I admit to never visiting that board and might have even responded the same way as you. I just would have chalked it up to them defending their recently butt-hurt program and me defending mine. Yeah it sucks but our day will come.

Not to hijack the thread, but when some here get frustrated with the play and don't simply say,"A win is a win" or "Any win is a good win" (which I don't necessarily disagree with) but worry that if these things don't get fixed, it will take Xavier longer to get to the place where we will be able to respond with righteous indignation and back it up.

BINGO!! THAT is exactly the real problem I have with these people. I lived in the NYC area for 8 years and there is a palpable disdain for average mid-westerners in their culture. I went to a lot of A10 games in Philly and it might be even worse there....quickly learned that sporting X gear was not a good idea, especially AFTER a Temple game. :shocked: And, wait for it, their political views tend to hide under the surface when bashing X. The “after a few Nattys” comment is a perfect example.

I’m a ALL CINCY guy and a proud X fan. As for those who think Nova fans speak highly of Xavier, just know that it’s really just a patronizing pat on the head. I for one can’t play nice with some entitled dicks on a message board. Sorry if I embarrass anyone in the future. Have I reached the Dark Side yet?

It’s always a good idea to stay classy when speaking of other teams.

Not a bad thought for all of us X fans. It is a sign we have arrived and are no longer that “Mid Major” team that still is not getting respect. Fact is, the general consensus is that X is a legit top 25 program that does not need to prove anything anymore... other than that it can win a BE tournament and get to the final four. Remember that we have an assistant from Georgia who when taking the job at X said (paraphrasing), “How could I pass up going to a program with a great basketball tradition like Xavier.”

We are well respected in this conference and that has happened by simply kicking your opponents butt or at least proving you can beat them. X continues to prove they can beaten everyone in the BE including Nova (though obviously not as often). We have earned the perception by most as a legit contender for the BE title - year in and year out. If not for Nova, it is likely X would have a few BE titles already.

Now that we no longer are the little team that surprises and are now a big time program, expected to finish at the top and go toe to toe with Nova, we have to start acting like fans of that big time program.

Show genuine respect to everyone you play, while quietly making sure you are prepared enough to kick a$$.

This is the Jay Wright approach with his Villanova teams and I respect the hell out of it.

He has his teams well prepared and then just pours on the niceties to everyone around him. I do think it is a very genuine and a very smart approach. I also see a little of Jay in Travis.

True that Nova does not have the same level of experience (and maybe not even the same level of talent) this year. The wise person is he who recognizes that Jay will get his team playing better as the season continues-count on it. As we all know, X is hardly a special looking team right now. Yes, we have four returning starters... who currently can not seem to shoot for beans from outside. Hopefully that gets better. But we should be careful about too much smack talk.

Smack talk is okay for a game but often comes back to bite you in the butt when boast about a team that has yet to truly prove itself on the court.

Being completely candid, I used to have to spend a lot of time constantly traveling to places that were really boring. Getting into arguments on message boards was a way to pass the time. Sometimes I'd just argue for the sake of arguing and not because I really cared one way or the other. The posters that I enjoyed the most are the ones that I went at the most and that came at me the most. By no means is that a productive way to spend my time, but at the very least it was amusing enough.

I don't think the vast majority of people care. They just like talking hoops and arguing about hoops and being able to do so anonymously and without any consequence. You asked if you were out of line. No, you weren't. And neither were they.

As a current Philly resident, I have to agree that getting into a debate with Nova fans is ill-advised, even if you make valid points, have a decent argument, and are respectful. Think about it this way - most Villanova fans are also Eagles fans, except that they have 3 championships to their name, so they’re even more defensive, obnoxious, and ready to throw down. They act like they’re God’s gift to basketball, and although they’re often extremely haughty and disrespectful, it’s just not worth getting into a pissing match with them. They’ll pull you down to their level and beat you with experience.
