I see that the schedule is out. Challenging as always. Every year I enjoy seeing how many games Xavier will play on the road prior to the first home game. This year the home opener is against UC on March 18. If all goes to plan, that will be the 20th game of the season.

3-game series with Ole Miss, Long Beach State and Cal State-Fullerton will be brutal. Also single games against USC, Kentucky and Louisville.

Yep - went to Prasco Park for the first time last year during the Big East Tournament. I wish they'd play at least one conference night game there for TV purposes.

2020 Big East Baseball Preseason Selections (https://goxavier.com/news/2019/12/18/baseball-picked-to-finish-second-in-big-east-four-selected-to-preseason-all-conference-team.aspx)

Xavier picked in a 3-way tie for 2nd in the Big East this season along with St. John's and Seton Hall. Creighton was picked #1 by a single vote over the other three teams. There is a huge gulf between the top four and the chaff (Butler, Villanova and Georgetown).

4 Xavier players were picked to the preseason All-Big East team - P Lane Flamm, 2B Ryan Altenberger, C Natale Monastra and SS Jack Housinger.

And for the third straight season, the Big East Tournament will be held at Prasco Park up in Mason.

Xavier starts its 19 game road trip this Friday in Memphis. Valentines Day on Beale Street for the baseball team. Very romantic.

Here's a link to the stream for the game. Not sure if it's going to work yet, but fingers crossed.

Is Allbry Major hurt? He's not in the lineup.

X has been no-hit through 6. So not the IDEAL start. Plus, Big East preseason player of the year Allbry Major isn't in the lineup, so again not the best.

The guy who started and threw 5 no hit innings at Xavier was 2-3 with a 7.79 ERA for Memphis last year. His WHIP was over 2.0. That's not good.

Might be injury - Major not in today's lineup, either.

But Nick Zwack having a good outing so far with 8 Ks through five innings. Xavier currently leading 2-1 in the top of the 6th.

XU WINS 3-1.
1-1 on the year.

Xavier-Memphis Finale (https://gotigersgo.com/watch/?Live=3972&type=Live)

Xavier leading 5-4 through 4 innings. X had a 4-spot in the 3rd inning capped off by a 2-run HR from Lane Flamm.

A pair of 2-run homers did the trick today. It was good to win this weekend series considering their next 4 games are a 3-game weekend series at Ole Miss along with a midweek trip to Louisville.

Then again, almost the entire 19-game road trip to open the season is brutal.

At least it's in warm weather?

Note forecast: 51 degrees Oxford, MS this weekend. 48 Cincinnati. Welp...

The Musketeers head to Oxford, Miss. to face the No. 15 Rebels for a three-game series. All three games will be on SEC Network+.

The Rebels got 2 out of 3 from Louisville last weekend. Louisville was preseason #1....but then also lost 10-3 at home to Wright State this week, so maybe they're a tad overrated.

Go Muskies! Hoping Major is back given that he's Xavier's best player.

The weekend series in Oxford wasn't a great idea. Lost all 3 by a combined 35-3.

No-hit in the first game and mercy ruled in the finale. Burn the tapes and move on.

Or do we baptize the head coach with a Fire Billy thread?

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Muskies travel to Louisville for a mid-week game with the #3 Cards today. Frankly, #15 Ole Miss looks a lot better than #3 Louisville right now, and Wright State knocked off the Cards mid-week last week. So perhaps there's hope?

Would be nice if Allbry Major was playing.

X took a 5-2 lead to the 7th but couldn't hold on. They lost 8-5. Three games at College of Charleston this weekend. CofC is 5-1 with five wins over essentially no one and a loss to Maryland.

Currently trailing the powerful Norse of NKU 6-1 with one out in the first inning.

7-1 after 1. Not the best outing for Trevor Olsen. 0.2 IP, 6H, 2BB, 1HBP, 7 R, 7ER. NKU left the bases loaded, and two of those runners were Olsen's, so it could have been even worse.

A pitcher's duel is developing in Highland Heights. Xavier just hit a grand slam, and has put up an 8 spot in the 2nd. X leads 9-7 still batting in the second.

15-8 Xavier after 4.5 innings...and 2.5 hours!

Also, just checked and NKU is a healthy 0-12 so far this year. Nice of our guys to let them feel good about themselves for an inning!

Muskies broke open a 16-14 game with 8 total runs in the 8th and 9th for the 24-14 win over now 0-13 NKU. Don't book your flights for Omaha just yet.

All in all, one win against the #17 team in the country this weekend ain't bad. Just hope the bats awaken before the team finally gets to play at home later this month.

I believe I read that the NCAA was giving all spring sports athletes an extra year because of the cancellations.

What does that mean for high school seniors committed to X for next year in these sports? Will there be roster spots/scholarships, etc.?

usfldan

This article is not much on specifics, but it does make seem like the NCAA did address these issues:

https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/28972856/ncaa-approves-extra-year-eligibility-spring-athletes

The NCAA's decision will extend the eligibility of all spring-sport student-athletes -- not just seniors whose careers would have ended after the cancellation of their seasons -- and will allow schools to expand their rosters beyond current scholarship limits to account for incoming recruits and seniors who were expected to leave.
...
The council also increased the roster limit in baseball, the only spring sport with such a limit, for student-athletes impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
