Per Shannon on Twitter (Link (http://@slrussell))
Asked @DieonteMiles (https://hootsuite.com/dashboard#)
then about potentially redshirting. Miles: “I’m just going to buy into whatever (Coach) tells me. Me personally, I wouldn’t mind being redshirted just to give me another year to get stronger. But honestly, at the end of the day, it’s all up to Coach."

Even with that statement from Steele, I hope he still is open to the possibility of Miles playing this season. I get redshirting if the coaches feel that at least two bigs (other than Tyrique) are playing really well all season.
Steele’s gonna want to make sure he has enough battle-tested bigs (outside of Carter) ready to play when Tyrique is gone. Wouldn’t be completely surprised if Steele decided later in the season he needs Miles in certain situations.

Sounds like he's taking it well. Steele has said that in his history there were a number of examples where a big man did not red shirt and by the time they had used up their final year of eligibility it was evident that they could have owned their position in the league had they been around another year. Look at Jalen Reynolds, Jason Love, James Farr, Kenny Frease and so many others. Each one played a very limited roll their freshman year and were largely out muscled and didn't effectively grasp the defensive schemes until year 2 or 3.

All that is true, but do the players want to stay in college that extra time? Some do, most don't.
Unless he's injured, Miles is going to be working to improve himself one way or another, so it's kind of a shame that he's not trusted enough at this point to give him a chance to show something in a game. From the team management perspective, it's really good to have one more big in practice helping balance out the competition. And Steele theoretically has one more year with someone manning the inside, should recruiting not turn out as he hopes. (The real reason IMO.)
From the player perspective it has to be really deflating to your progress. The work a D1 athlete has to put in is considerable and not having games as that reward makes it that much more of a slog. Hopefully he really enjoys school and sets some goals towards using that extra year to try and get a graduate degree. But a guy at his size is probably having fantasies of playing more, not less. I hope he hangs in there. It's probably good that his family support system is nearby.

It’s not good business to force a redshirt on someone and that’s certainly not what happened here. Obviously it’s no one’s first choice not to play, but you can be very confident that Miles/his family are very much on board with this plan, or else it wouldn’t have happened.

The Love, Farr, and O'Mara examples are good evidence for Miles as to why he should redshirt. "You can play 50-75 minutes this year, most of it during garbage time, or you can come back as a fifth year senior and play 20-30 minutes a game."

Yes to Love and Farr.
Jalen left with a year of eligibility still there.
Granted he was 23 or something.
Kenny started out of the shoot...

Not to mention Reynolds also sat a year for academics.

Makes sense ..... if we need him for some reason mid way through the year, I assume he can play at that point?
While I get Steele looking at players like Farr and Love’s first year and thinking redshirting Miles might be the way to go, he might also want to weigh how even that little bit of playing time those two had likely helped their confidence for their next year... and he might want to keep in mind that next year there will be no big with more than one year of experience playing for X... which is a bit of a different situation from Farr and Love’s.

Miles will be practicing all year with the team. Getting a few minutes at garbage time in a handful of games isn't going to do much for him.

If he's not physically ready to play... which sounds like the motivation in this instance, then there's a real possibility of injury. I'm with you all on the pros and cons, but Steele is very honest with his players. It definitely sounds like this has the blessing of player and parents though. And yeah, he can go on the court and any time, but if that happens then obviously year 1 of eligibility is gone (baring a medical redshirt).

If it’s only garbage time we’re talking about, I would agree not to use him.
If he is not looking ready in practice... same.
If he does look solid in practice and it comes down to saving a year of eligibility despite showing clear evidence he can really help the team, let him play (and I believe Steele would likely reevaluate the situation if it got to that point).

If there was clear evidence that he could help the team this year, they wouldn't be announcing his redshirt after the first game. It apparently is clear to the staff that he can't help the team this year.

I don’t really see much reason to announce a redshirt after 1 game. Then again I don’t see much value to the individual redshirting unless he is so raw and it is inevitable he will play college ball for a 5th year. I also don’t buy that he is not physically ready as this isn’t the NBA. Just my opinion and I hope this works out for him.

Actually, Steele specifically mentions that he believes Miles can help the team this year at about the 4 minute mark, during the Jacksonville post press conference.
I trust Steele was sincere about that comment, but at the same time feels he needs to have Miles and his family officially prepared that he is likely not playing (and will save his year of eligibility) unless he is absolutely needed.

This is my concern. How many guys these days who have any pro prospects (not just NBA) want to stick around for the 5th year?
Jalen left with time left, Kaiser did as well, I think a lot think this may be Scruggs and Naji's last year.
Seems more and more guys want to get to making money right away and will forgo a year of eligibility to do that, even if they know the NBA isnt the likely landing place.

Agree, Kenny was a Top 60 player coming out of HS. You don't redshirt that type of recruit.
I'm usually against redshirting, but I do think in this case, it could really benefit Miles and Xavier.

I dont have much problem with it because they obviously dont think he will/could contribute much this year, and if something changes they could always just decide to play him.
However, I think it only benefits XU, if he stays the 5th year.
I dont know much about him to know if that would be something he would do, he probably doesnt even know at this point, but I just think its less likely that guys want to stay that 5th year by the time they get there.

As far as a 5th year goes, let's not forget the increasingly popular Grad Transfer option. We could invest 4 years into developing Miles only to lose him to another program. Not likely but always a possiblitity IF the situation dictates (ala Martin).

Don’t forget that Miles is really about a year younger than most freshman. He just turned 18 in late August. Many freshman come in after a year of prep school, but he came straight from playing small high school BB in KY, no prep year. In fact, he really had only 1 year of HS varsity experience as he was injured his junior year. At this point he is nothing but upside and potential and won’t reach his peak physically for several years. If he and his family are supportive of this decision, and by all accounts they are, I think this is the way to go.

Think of Derrick Brown's redshirt. Gave him the opportunity to bulk up and become a very effective player his first year. By year two of playing, he was a monster. Hoping this is the path Miles follows because he has the potential.

He also left with a year remaining.
Maybe there is something to be said for only training and working out and not needing to play also? I guess you can maybe work out more without worrying about also having to play? Others would know that answer better than me probably. Will he practice/work out/overall bball schedule be vastly different as a redshirt than a guy who played here and there?
If so and his redshirt year allows him to be that much more prepared for next year than if he played some this year sparingly then I am all for it and whether he stays that 5th year becomes less important I guess.

At the time, the rumor was that if Miller had not gone to Arizona, Brown would have stayed.

I think it will be easier for him to lift and put on muscle without worrying about playing. Pretty sure the rest of the team scales back lifting significantly during the season.

Yeah I remember hearing that too.
That kind of adds to my worry though, who knows what the team and his situation will be in 4 years, if we ever get to use him for that 5th year, I dont think anyone could reasonably be sure of that at this time.
But again, redhshirt or not I guess it doesnt matter if he wasnt going to really play anyway. And if he can solely focus on add strength and bulking up to an extent he couldnt if he had to be ready to play then that is a plus.

Yes, this exactly. This is the main benefit. Most D1 players lose weight and muscle during the season. Miles can focus 100% on strength and eating. And eating some more. And also eating. And eating some more.
And lifting.

The point is though, they got more out of Brown in 3 years than they likely would have in 4 because he got that opportunity to commit a season mostly to weightlifting. So it was worth it. Miles has the potential to be an NBA player just like Brown.

Adding weight to his frame will be interesting to see.... his frame doesn’t look like it will be easy to add weight safely. I would have him shooting all day every day and improve basketball skills as much as possible. He could be the real deal.

Davis at least has broad shoulders. I was think more Chris Bosh at age 18.
