View Full Version : Butler stomps UIndy
79-47 Either we're not all we think we are, or UIndy had nothing left in the tank after playing 4 games in 6 days. Let's hope Indy was gassed and got the usual screw job from the Hinkle officials.

Did Butler shoot 28% from the foul line and 28% from three?
McDermott scored 30 on 62% shooting from 3, and was called twice for flopping....some things never change with those pricks.

As we all know comparative scores aren’t really relevant. The big question is can this team hit free throws and to a lesser degree thre pointers. We shoot it well from the free throw line and it’s a 20 plus point win. I don’t think we are going to shoot lights out from three. X started to be successful last year when they played good defense. I saw improved defense at the game and think that is out ticket to success this year.

The thing that concerned me was poor execution in getting good shots and AGAIN very poor 3 PT shot selection. Undisciplined I would call it. With the vets we have and Steele having a full year under his belt, I expected improvement. I agree we are going to be a great 3 PT shooting team......but we do control the shots we take and the decision making.......I hope we see improvement there on Tuesday.

Especially if those are exhibition game scores.
Not sure that a lot of people really understand the mindset of a player in an exhibition game v the mindset of a player in a real game. So much of competing in sports at the college level is mental, and a big part of the success that a team, or a player, achieves is dependent upon their mental level of concentration. It’s really difficult for many athletes to reach the level of concentration that they need when they know that the contest really means nothing. I would have to assume that the Butler players (being as Butler is located in the city of Indianapolis) would be a little more tuned in playing the U of Indianapolis, than the Xavier players might have been. Sure, there is an element of personal pride and wanting to play well, but it’s virtually impossible for an athlete to be at their peak in terms of mental concentration for every contest. Exhibition games are extremely hard for most athletes to reach the same level of concentration and desire to achieve that they will have for real games.

I didn’t think shot selection or shot discipline was all that bad. Indy packed it in , you have to take the shots they give you. Most were in the confines of the offense. I thought X looked inside first but when it wasn’t there they found an open guy on the perimeter. I thought Scruggs had multiple open looks —- problem is he missed all of them. That will be our Achilles heal all year, can this team make a reasonable percentage from three. Time will tell. I thought there were few, if any, jacked up threes early in the shot clock, like early last year.

X only beat UIndy by 12. Since Butler beat them by 32, that means Butler is going to beat X by 20. Dang, this season is over before it even started.

More than ever in sports every game is an individual event. I attribute it is AAU and psychological training. 40+ years ago you almost know if you would win or lose before the game began (if you were truthful)..only a handful were contested. Now every team thinks they can win at any sport. Duke beat a D2 team by 13 the other day and you see some strange upsets. Butler box score impressive though, Nze from U Wise Milwaukee, Smits, and Jordan Tucker all have very good pedigrees and Baldwin can be a beast.. This will always be a tough league, even Marquette is reloaded from what I read losing both Hausers

Using the logic from last season, U Indy beat Valpo in an exhibition. Valpo beat Miss. St who beat Murray St. who beat Belmont who beat Lipscomb who beat NJIT who beat Wagner who beat Hartford who beat Boston College who beat Fl. St. who beat Virginia. So UI/IU (no PUI) has a claim to the National Championship.

So, we can still play for second place, right?

Leighton Schrand started both halves and finished the game on the floor. Carter and KyKy didn't play. Are we really going to bring the transitive property into a meaningless warmup game?

At least UIndy should be co-champion.

I watched that Fla St - UVa game. Kevin Bacon was in the 6th row behind the Seminole bench.
