Quentin Goodin and Naji Marhsall apparently had the worst two offensive ratings in the conference for players who had a 20% or greater usage...

The article has a heavy Eastern seaboard bias from what I can tell. Thought some might to take a look.

So Q is one of “The 20 most interesting people of the 2019-2020 Big East Season” because he had the second worst offensive ratings last year?

Sounds like Brian Foley is not a big fan of X.

Mr. Foley being quick to suggest that X is overrated this year simply because of Q and Naji’s poor offensive ratings last year is what I find a bit interesting. He doesn’t even think to take into consideration that last year’s team had a short bench, causing Naji and Q to have to play more minutes (where they were exhausted at times ) and causing them to feel they had to shoot more and do more than they normally would to help the team.

The Big East is like the A10 , heavy Eastern seaboard bias. We are considered county foak.

I wonde mr what those numbers look like if you limit them to the Creighton home game on. Probably significantly better.

I think both Q and Naji tried to do too much last year. I think that was primarily due to the lack of overall talent on last year's team. Surrounded by more talent this year, that hopefully won't be a problem this year.

I admit that 30 minutes should likely be the cap for most guys, but did they really have increased minutes from what other starters have had in recent seasons? Most of the go-to guys are around 34-35 minutes in the couple years prior, which is what they played.

These two are in the top ten of Xavier's all-time highest rate recruits (according to 247sports). Scruggs is the second highest rated after Semaj C. You'd expect them to be getting the bulk of the minutes. Can't we just accept that they didn't perform as well as they could have? The extra shooting and floortime wouldn't be necessary if they were more efficient.

The short bench does affect how easy it is for some people to execute, but if its minutes that they can't handle then that's on the coaches for game management. Both were injured a bit during part of the season. Marshall is still learning what he can and can't do well. I think Goodin just gets flustered by the competition and lays an egg too often. Hopefully more shooters this year helps both guys.

He should have mentioned that Q and Naji were thrust into roles that they had never been in before. A bit of a hack job by him....but now we have some material to motivate the guys with

You make some good points.

No question Q and Naji had more than a few awful games where they were forcing 3s, making bad decisions with the ball when passing and when driving in the lane. They do have to own part of last year's low offensive rating. At the same time, it is obvious that the core 4 had some players around them that could not always be counted on to step up and contribute in a way that the team desperately needed them to contribute (except for Hankins).

X didn't just have a short bench last year, they had a significant drop off in talent (other than Hankins) after the core 4. That drop off in talent (at least in the first half go the season) often allowed teams to go on runs.

The struggles X had on defense for much of the year had players like Q and Naji trying to do more on offense to make up for buckets given up on defense. Once X became good on the defense end and opponents were no longer scoring easily on them, Naji and Q no longer had to try and play hero ball.

It was different when the team had Trevon and JP, two legit 3 point specialist who could be counted on to keep X in the game on offense or even bring a team from 10 down by hitting a few 3s in a row.

The coaches must own much of the mess we saw on the court for much of the season, but they also deserve credit for eventually figuring out how to get the team playing better on defense, how to get players to start making smarter decisions on offense and how to more quickly learn to recognize a lineup that works well against the opponent they are playing.

Hopefully there is enough talent this season that Q and Naji never feel the need to go outside of their game to try to play hero anymore. I have a feeling they are going to prove to be much smarter with the ball in their hands partly because they will have grown from last year and partly because they will be surrounded by more playmakers.

The biggest issue for Quentin was not having Trevon or JP opening the lane for him because their shooting abilities stretched defenses. It won't be like two years ago but adding a few shooters should improve the situation for Q over last season.
