Why? If he already left Butler for Evansville, he was gone anyways but I may not fully understand the background.

Why?

It's the Butler Way.

Just go read the comments on their board.

I read this past week on a job site that X was in need of an admin. position for Coach Steele to organize everything for Coach Steele and the basketball team. This is different.
This new coach, I don't know if X was a coach short last year or if this is a new position. My gut tells me we were short a coach last year. Good to have Indiana recruiting even stronger with this new coach and Steele oiling the pipeline.

This is not an active recruiting position. Yes he might have contacts, but you are only allowed 3 recruiting assistants. This is likely game prep and team operations.

He is filling Jeremy Growe's vacated position. Kinda wild that he would leave an assistant position at Evansville for this quasi assistant role, but Travis has a track record of being very persuasive

Looks like they're just mad they didn't hire him themselves. Not like this is the first time we've hired a butler guy. He was their assistant and associate head coach during the Brad Stevens years and those runner-up teams. seems like a good guy to have on our staff

I'm pretty sure X pays better than Eville, or Butler, for that matter. But going from head coach to coaching assistant is quite a drop in 2 years. The Xavier Way is sort of the Butler Way, with a lot bigger pile of money.

And 64 year old Todd Lickliter is also suddenly leaving Evansville for the ever so popular "he wants to spend more time with his family" claim. So what's really going on at Evansville?

The Butler Way, at least when it comes to their fan base, is much more about pure douchery and emulating the VD fan base with respect to its jealousy for Xavier. They have some real idiots on that board.

My guess is that he wants a shot at a top job again and having Xavier on your resume, or getting hired away from, sounds stronger than getting hired away from Evansville. He might take that step down just to be associated with a higher profile name.

Is no one else the least bit bothrerd that XU would pluck a coach so close to the start of the season and or doewsnt it concern anyone that this coach wants to leave so close to the start of the reg. season? It does me!!

Dante Jackson was hired in mid-July last year.

Why? If I were an Evansville fan I’d be worried. As a xavier fan it’s encouraging

Don't let Graves' subpar record as Head Coach at South Alabama fool you, this is a GREAT addition to Xavier's staff. Matthew is a fine human, extremely intelligent, and was a huge part of their run to two Final Fours under Brad Stevens. He also should have been hired at Miami (OH) when they ultimately hired John Cooper in 2012 -- hey Redhawks, how'd that work out?

I'm not sure what assurances were made to Coach Graves to get him to come over into this non-coaching position, but know for sure that he is a huge addition to the team and the staff.

Wont this new hire have a limited role? X has 3 assistants pounding the recruiting trail. Maybe he is an added mind that stays close to Cintas for coaching decisions and writing up unique plays and scouting.

Bingo. With the amount of recruiting the other 3 do, I'm surprised they have time to coach. Sounds like Graves is a strategist, and since he learned strategy from Stevens, that can only be a plus for X.

Heck, he may have stepped away from Evansville BECAUSE he wouldn't need to recruit. But we should also file this event away if it unfolds that one of the younger assistants might be looking to jump ship after this season.

I think this is Travis being an Indiana guy and wants to stockpile Indiana talent.
