I thought it would be nice to have a thread where some of you insiders can post info leading up to Spain....Only 8 weeks away, that's about halfway to Musketeer Madness!
I notice that some or all of the guys will arrive on campus starting this week and some coordinated activity will begin. To what extent is allowed I have no idea but hoping some of you do. I also read where a series of full practices are permitted leading up the the Spain departure in August. Obviously this is a huge advantage over other teams that are not afforded this added time to gel.....not to mention the luxury of playing some real competition at full speed.

I read somewhere that at this time the players are limited to 8 hours of organized activities....4 hours of training and 4 hours of court time.....per week. I’ve also seen where they can have 10 practice sessions in preparation for the Spain trip, but I’ve not sure what the limits are there as far as time and frequency.

Yeah,
I am really interested to hear who shows up this week and participates in the 4 and 4 hour stuff. The S&C is a given but would love to know what the "organized activities" entail and if Coach and staff are hands on.

I think that all of the freshman and returning players are on campus. I think the court time (with coaches) is mostly skills work and drills. But I’m quite sure that the players will find some time for some inter squad scrimmages on their own. I don’t think there is any limit on what they can do in the practices before the summer trip, but I’m sure there is a limit on the length of time they can practice during those sessions.
Edit..I just read the rules on this and the court time is limited to “skills instruction” Coaches are not allowed to participate in or even watch the strength and conditioning sessions, but there is no limit to the number of coaches allowed to participate in the skills sessions....which are limited to 2 hours per week.
Also, in order to participate all of the freshman must be enrolled in summer school. Returning players and transfers have different rules regarding their eligibility to participate.

This is all true. With the addition that ALL players, new and returning, will be at XU starting this week. There isn't much vacation when you are a D1 College player. Add to that, there is a Summer Academic session starting July 1 that is over the time the team leaves for Spain. Some kids will be getting a head start on school now.

I don't really know the full story. It kind of came up out of nowhere, I got an email about it from the Steele Camp people. It was free and three hours. And the Kanters are doing them around the country (https://themaestrosports.com/camps/#!/form). They gave kids pizza and t-shirts. In a cynical world, where little is done for free, I honestly have thought somehow there was more to the story. But it really seems the Kanters are just good dudes trying to do good deeds. It's pretty cool and refreshing.

OK, so it was more of an appreciation deal as apposed to a serious development camp. I know it was FREE for this event, BUT I'm hoping it can be a every year event and catch fire!

Travis and Mario said that the Kanter's camp at Xavier was a late addition to the list. Only reason Enes added it to the list was because Karem talked him into it. Travis said that "because it was free" it drew a much different group than the traditional coach's camp and provided an opportunity to kids that likely never would have been inside the Cintas center a chance to be involved. Gave away Xavier shirts to the participants. All the players really enjoyed being involved.

I took my son as well. He loves basketball but isn't super talented at it. Being vertically challenged doesn't help. He had a good time. The Kanter guys seem like genuinely nice guys who just want to do good things for people. If you don't have a subscription to The Athletic, I highly recommend it. Shannon's article about Enes and Kerem is great and gives more detail about why Enes does this.

I have been following Enes Kanter's ban from entering Turkey for a long time. He would be arrested the moment he enters Turkey. I applaud him for his take on Turkey's President and then finding ways to help folks in various cities in the USA with his baskbetball camps. I appreciate his brother having played for XU. These seem like 2 really good guys.

FWIW, Myles Hanson (Walk on transfer last year) is getting lots of friendly compliments from Xavier teammates. Wonder if he can contribute anything more than being a walk on. He was a player with a full scholarship then he transferred to walk on at X? Why do that f you are not going to pay and get the $60,000 tuition and room and board bill from X? Mystery!

Everything about Hanson is a mystery. I raised the same question months ago and apparently the Ivy League doesn’t give athletic scholarships. Our 13th remains open, so I guess he could be awarded one for this year. As far as his ability to contribute at this level b-ball wise, Coach was quoted as saying something like “he can EMBARRASS guys if they’re not giving 100%” but some on this board seem to believe he’s only a serviceable practice player. I personally think he’s gonna surprise us all.....there is certainly a need for an athletic wing to spell Naj.
Can you elaborate on those “friendly compliments”?

For those of you not on Facebook, or not following Shannon Russell on there, she had a nice recap of the first practice in preparation for Spain. It lasted about 2.5 hours and some of the rookies were pretty exhausted by the end. The Core 4 were very vocal. Daniel Ramsey did not practice due to a minor knee sprain. Dahmir Bishop has trouble keeping his man in front of him during one on one drills, but had everyone cheering for him to get the drill completed.
Big difference in Travis’s presence compared to last year where it seemed everyone still thought of him as the associate head coach and he had to really yell at them to pay attention and not goof off. Not a problem this year. It’s his team.

That'll happen when you do it your way and lose six games in a row, then buy in and win 6 of 7 and beat Nova. I think they realized trav might know what he's doing.

Great video... thanks for finding/sharing. Man, I can't wait to see this team in action!! It's gonna be a learning curve for the newcomers but it sounds like there's some strong leaders this year that were maybe discovering that need as the year went on last year. As tough as that losing streak was it seems like that was what really kicked off what will be the destiny of the Travis Steele era... tough guys, athletic and leaders.

So, All 10 practices in preparation for Spain are complete and the above info is the only thing posted on how things progressed. I was hoping some of you insiders/alumns would have caught wind of more details or that maybe someone on campus has heard some chatter regarding who's been killing it but unfortunately nothing new on this thread in almost 3 weeks.
Anyway, the Spain trip is August 7-15, so I guess the team has already flown out or are preparing to do so. Games start Saturday in Barcelona with 2 to follow in Madrid. One should expect all 5 freshman to see plenty of PT along with the 2 transfers. Coach has to get a feel for his bench asap, as it will consist of 6 newcomers, DJ and Hanson.
I am really excited to see how Miles and ZFree can compete. Most European teams feature frontcourts with considerable size, so they will certainly have the opportunity to show what they got. I am hoping Miles will emerge as a force and lay any red shirt speculation to rest,. An efficient back up for Jones is a huge question mark and a key to having a special season, especially as it pertains to BEast success.

No inside information but Daniel Ramsey has missed every practice with an injury. I think knee? Dontarius James appears to have an ankle/foot/lower leg injury as well according to his Instagram story. James' is more recent, he had been practicing. Believe the team heads out tomorrow. Should be a good opportunity to see how the freshmen and transfers react and mesh during a game setting against a different opponent. I think X will wind up with a solid 8-9 man rotation. Goodin, Scruggs, Marshall, Carter, and Jones, with Moore, Tandy, and probably Freemantle all likely regular rotation players. Bishop and James could be wild cards. Ramsey might get reserve minutes. Miles probably redshirts.

But they also shot 60% from 2.....and they are using the international 3-point line and not the old NCAA distance. It will take some getting used to for many of the players and 25% may turnout to be a decent % for a lot of teams with the longer distance going into effect.

Missed a few 3’s in beginning then got warm when they put in all newcomers. As you can tell went cold after. Heard ball was slick and seemed that way in game.
A few things: Carter is so much more skilled with the ball than I remembered. Spacing on offense was night and day from last year. Freemantle is the real deal. He was tough on both sides of the court.

I think this will be one of the story lines to follow into the season. Lots of depth, more fouls to give, more to ramp up the pace and go for steals -- a category we've been grossly lagging on for the last ump-teen years. Now, you want steals not fouls ... let's see how that develops.

OK. with so many new players, I forget who is what #. I could go to the XU roster and see if they have updated roster buy I am lazy. Is #2 KyKy?
Shouldn't KyKy earn the right to be named KyKy like Terrell Holloway did? Tu was not called "Tu" until Mack made him earn it. He then shot 10,000 shots in summer.
Just saying...
Just avoid adding the letter "n" between the "Ky"s!

They won 109-74 against a much better Spain team they played last Saturday. Started off slow and lost Q1. With about 2 minutes left in Q1, we 10 fouls. Refs were calling it tight. Naji looked really sharp and other core 4 played well. Tandy caught fire from 3 and Freemantle is going to be a stud and could be a legitimate stretch 4. Think they shot around 47% from 3. Unbelievable

Agreed. Calling them glorified practice games may even be overstating what they are. I think they're on a a foreign sight seeing tour, and every now and then they stop for a couple of hours to play a basketball game against a really bad team.

I agree 100% with this part. Also it gives Steele an opportunity to use and see different lineups. As for the newcomers, think we have a different view here. We know you get great highlight tapes of new recruits, but these type of games give me (at least) a better idea on what we they can potentially do. Not to say my views are correct just gives me the confidence someone like Freemantle will be able to give us good minutes off the bench this year. Think people smarter then me are saying the same thing about Zach based off what they’ve seen.

Agreed.
It was very clear to me Freemantle would be a solid midrange and 3 point shooter and could handle the ball well from the game I saw him play during his senior year. The big question to me was (and to some extent still is) whether he could hold his own down low against other D1 talented bigs (since he was going against a smaller forward in the game I watched).
I do think scrimmaging against Jones and even D Miles looks to be really helping him prepare for that higher level of talent he will be facing (particularly in the BE) this year. Really excited to see Zach (and all of the new faces) step in and fearlessly contribute with their complementary skills.

Yup, but is nice because it gets things accelerated a bit, extra practices, being able to understand what the road-game preparations are, letting the team gel together more, building team morale etc. In terms of improving on a basketball skill sense, probably not much to gain, but in terms of all of the other extracurricular stuff, pretty beneficial!

Thanks you two for the update on James- I too was wondering why he was not in the box score or in any of the videos of them playing in Spain. A bit of a bummer for him that he missed out on a key opportunity to prove he deserves some minutes this upcoming season. He’ll still have more opportunities.
While I am quite happy that we have more overall talent on the team than last year, I’d still like to see how much James has improved and if that improvement might be enough for him to become a solid contributor this season (getting 10-15 minutes a game). Minutes are going to be tougher to earn this year.

Yeah, Would have been nice to get a glimpse of what DJ can contribute and I guess the verdict is still out on what Myles Hanson can bring. Although he has seen a few minutes, according to Andy Mac, he also is not 100%. I was holding out hope that at least one of the two can see some solid minutes spelling Naj at the 3 but we’ll have to wait and see. if not, hopefully Ramsey can fill that role when healthy. I haven’t been able to see any Spain action, but will assume Bishop played some SF with Marshall on the bench OR is Coach tinkering with a ZFree, Jones, Carter frontcourt?
Anyway, obviously 6 of the 7 new guys have seen substantial PT in the 2 games and all 6 have put up good numbers. Team 98 is deep and loaded with seasoned veterans at the top. Over 21 years of actual game experience among our upperclassmen and that is a rarity in high D1 these days. So let’s savor every moment from this Spain trip until the end of March.....we got something special brewing here!!

Mystery of all mysteries to me is Myles Hanson getting a full scholarship at an Ivy league school, then leaving a free Ivy league school and deciding to attend a private school and pay $40k-$50k per year and be a walk on for 2 years or more.

I can not find any info on Hanson getting an academic scholly at Columbia, but if not, he probably took advantage of some other financial assistance that the Ivy now offers.
The real mystery is confirming his current status at Xavier. It might be similar to the Leighton Schrand situation last year but why is it so difficult to verify? That was discussed on this board last season. Looks to be common practice when there are less than 13 full rides rostered, single year scholarships are given on an “appreciation” basis. Apparently Schrand was awarded one last year. Could this be done with Hanson this year? It’s entirely possible that this was discussed during his recruitment...come in, work hard on/off the court and earn your scholarship if one comes available. But again, hard to verify.

Holy crap those announcers were bad. They couldn't tell players apart. Would have been nice to know SOMETHING about the opponents. How hard is it to have a roster in front of you and say a name of a player once in awhile....maybe say where he comes from. Some of the "Spanish" players clearly looked American, yet no information. They were constantly mixing up Xavier players...saying the wrong guy scored or whatever. Then, when the shit hit the fan (several times) it was like they had no idea what happened. Clearly the issue was that the Spanish player wrapped his arm around Carter's arm and then just kept dragging him...eventually tossing him to the ground. No mention of this, which must be why Steele was so upset that only Xavier players were punished and the Spanish player got to go to the line for starting the mess.
Later, when, Naji was fouled intentionally (not hard, but the same kind of on purpose fouls they were committing in both games), the Spanish player sort of tried to say "my bad." Naji, feeling it was intentional (which it was), wasn't having the apology. They guy wouldn't let it go and kept trying to reach out and touch Naji to say "my bad." Shortly after this play, he was removed from the game (after the Spanish player was) and I don't know who started the interaction, but Naji got heated and drew the T. This was the right call, but I do feel both situations were instigated by the fact that Spain coached their team to foul on purpose all over the place AND they were constantly trying to wrap up arms of the defensive player and get a foul called on X (which the refs fell for an awful lot).
Meanwhile, the announcers were clueless about the game they were calling. Moreover, Carter leaves the court with a huge ice pack on his head and two trainers with him....and no mention of what happened to him. Anywho, glad to leave 3-0 with some valuable experience. Hopefully, team is fully bonded. Good to see the boys on the court again. Gonna feel like a LONG time until November. :)

It’s not a obsession by any means. More curiosity than anything Yes, he’s a walk on. It’s just that he IS a very high level athlete physically with good size and intellect. Some here have offered there opinions on what his role might be but very little said from the coaching staff or media, other than Coach Steele did say in an interview last year that “He can embarrass people if they’re not giving 100%”. He did see 19 games of D1 action as a freshman including 19 minutes vs Nova and managed some production, so no question he can play at this level. That said, he has been active in the program for over a year now and has the physical tools to contribute. Is he out playing James in practice at the 3? Maybe. Is he ahead of Ramsey in some areas? Probably.
So, the question becomes who will spell Marshall at the 3. I did read where Bishop has played some SF in practice but like I said, I wasn’t able to see any Spain action so IDK who was filling that role when Naj was sitting. Thus my Zach/Ty/Jason frontcourt option. It was a question NOT a prediction.
By the way, it was Schrand that apparently had free tuition last year, not Hanson.

Other than Naji (7-17) and Tandy (6-14) and Zach (1 of 2), no players shot better than 30% from 3 for the three games - and some really struggled. Mack & now Steele like to keep (at least) 1 scholarship open in case a mid-season transfer comes along that you can't pass on. 13 scholarship limit. They had 10 scholarship players last season so they rewarded Schrand & Hanson with a 1-year scholarship. Since they have 12 scholarship players for this season I wouldn't expect any walk-ons to get scholarships, but I suppose they could give one out.
