Is that 8.4 mil split equally between the schools? Or does a portion go to the conference first then the rest is split by the schools? Or do the schools who made tourney get bigger share?

I'm not sure how the Big East splits up the pot. My guess is that it's disproportionate; the schools generating the units get a larger share.
The good news is that I doubt any any of the monies is taken out for administrative expenses for the conference, as I believe we've already read that that funding is taken from the media contract with Fox for that.

I cannot find the chart from this year, but here is the pay outs from last year based on what schools contributed to the conference payout. The American's list of schools is hilarious:

I thought the original "Catholic 7" got a slightly bigger share of the tournament units since they were the ones who had to pony up to keep the rights to the Big East name and Madison Square Garden. I wouldn't expect that to be the case next year since the 6-year window for units will now be exclusive to the New Big East.

Nope. That was never on the table.
As I believe you noted, they didn't have any units to pull forward into the NBE. Those units were lost to the AAC schools in consideration for keeping the naming rights and MSG, etc.
There is some kind of formula involved; it isn't an equal split. But the C7 and New 3 have no bearing on this matter.

This is a quote from the link noted:
It's my understanding that teams in both the old and new Big East negotiated to take their units with them
That seems to indicate the units weren't lost when the BE reformed in 2013.

The units are paid out over a six year period. Meaning that the Big East gets 1/6th of the $8.4 million now, another 1/6th of it next year, and so on. So the BE will still be getting money from both of Nova's championship runs this year.
As far as the distribution of units, the American is the old Big East, and the current Big East began as a brand new conference. In 2013-14, they didn't get any units from the previous five years. Those all went to the American as if the American was still the old Big East. That doesn't matter now since it has been six years, but that was the original agreement/arrangement. I don't know how the American or the Big East shares their money. The money goes to the conference and not directly to the teams. All I know is that the American was still considered the Old Big East, and the New Big East was considered a brand new league.
EDIT: Not to hijack the thread, but the Atlantic Ten made a lot of money off of Xavier, and as best I could tell gave them smaller shares than Duquesne and as big of a share as Fordham, which never made any sense to me. This is one of about fifty things that I couldn't stand when it came to the A10's league office. To more than half the teams in the league you just wanted to say "You're welcome, but not really, and you're never getting anymore so enjoy it while you can." It feels kinda good now that the six years is up, doesn't it!!?

Am I reading this right? X got less tourney money than Duquesne and the same as Fordham? How and Why?

Yes, and I wondered that for ten years and never figured out why.
If you go back into the archives of this site, you'll find me complaining about it on multiple occasions. Haha.
GOD I'm so glad to be done with that league. I respect some of the individual programs, but as a whole it is one of the most poorly managed conferences in the entire country. They've got good teams in big markets and they still can't get their media deals right. I wanted to leave the A10 and just do our own thing with some of the other schools that actually cared about basketball before the Big East was an option, but I guess it worked out pretty well in the end.

As we talked about on here and previous boards for years, Linda Blutarsky was an absolute joke as a Commissioner but some posters on here took me to task for saying that. They always said that it was on the University Presidents to make it better, but my point was U Presidents run entire colleges and can't know all the intricacies of the College Sports business like a Commissioner is supposed to. Plus, a Commissioner has to LEAD the Presidents in making good decisions for the League. Lack of good leadership caused the A10 to admit scofflaws like Fordham who did zero to help, and only stole money from the rest of the schools. In 2004, the A10 had two Elite 8 teams and had a chance to really take off from there, but Blutarsky had no clue how to leverage that performance with a TV deal. McGlade is better, but not by much.
See Val Ackerman. A Commissioner who knows what the hell she's doing, understands the media landscape, works her contacts and the important partners like Fox & Madison Square Garden then produces. Who knows what stuff has come her way that was tempting to recommend at the time, but after further thought, she shot down? We are lucky to have her as the Leader.

Xavier and Butler got $ from A10 last year? Maybe it is paid out over 5 years.....

Nope. They left that money behind (especially Butler who never feasted on their units after they left the Horizon in 2012).
