View Full Version : Joey Brunk transferring from Butler
Center Joey Brunk is leaving Butler. Will graduate this summer and will have 2 yrs immediate eligibility. I know I've bashed him here, but maybe with Xavier coaching he could become a badass Center. It was down to X or Butler when he signed, and he stayed in Indy because his father was dying if cancer. He was a teammate of Scruggs at Southport HS in Indy.

Big East has rules about transferring within the conference.

I figured they did. Does that apply even yo grad transfers though? Not that I necessarily want Brunk just wondering.

I can't believe that Xavier would want to commit to Brunk for 2 years. I think they can do better.

Yeah, I wasn't all that impressed

My point was X players are coached differently than Butler. X guys, especially post players, play with a chip on their shoulder. Exposure to the Xavier Way, might be just what he needs to be a force. Steele wanted him pretty bad 3 yrs ago.

Brunk is Junk.
And Butler is in trouble. They are about to fall off the cliff. Only St. Johns may keep them out of the cellar next year with Ponds leaving.
Oh, that's right, DePaul.

We've been saying that Butler will fall off the cliff for a decade now - I'll believe it when I see it. DePaul may actually be competitive again, but losing Max Strus and a couple of other guys will hurt them a bit.

Totally agree.
It's one thing to get by and play it on the cheap and preach the Buthead Way in a small time conference where you become the big fish in a very small pond, riding an exceptional coaching pick and some under the radar talent (e.g. Heywood) to a couple miracle runs, but you can't get away with a lack of investment like that in a conference like the Big East. You'll simply get buried on the recruiting trail.
Hinkle Zeppelin Storage Facility? National Historic Landmark: check. Renovated: well, yes, you have to say that, but with a lot of funding going to fixing aged infrastructure; it doesn't exactly have NBA arena-like amenities. Overall, a great fan experience? Yes, I would have to think so if you're an avid basketball fan and appreciate the sport's history.
Does all that translate well to a recruit evaluating where he wants to spend up to four years of his life? I'll submit that it DOES NOT translate and show well to most modern young players. Imagine a 4* recruit visiting Butler and then visiting Xavier, Marquette and Georgetown. You had better love the Butler coach, because Butler is otherwise going to get boat raced on the facilities checklist. Therein may lay the problem: there is a lot of noise coming from the pugged faithful that Laval isn't cutting it. Coupling a wounded Lavall Jordan with comparatively weak facilities is a road Butler hasn't travelled in a long while, perhaps since we constantly beat the snot out of them in the MCC.

They've finished 6th and tied for last under lavall in his 1st two years and his recruiting isn't great. wouldn't be shocked if they finish near the cellar next year as well

Butler has never played past Friday (once) in the Big East Tournament. They've won one game, (1-6).

True that they've sucked ox balls in the Big East Tournament, but unlike other teams have actually pulled some decent weight in the NCAA Tournament with 4 victories (including a Sweet 16 run in 2017) and 4 overall NCAA Tournament appearances. 2020-21 could be really hairy for Butler if they're not able to replace guys like Kamar Baldwin.
Overall, here's what the Big East unit distribution will look like next year:
2014 - 6 units (Villanova, Creighton, Xavier, Providence)
2015 - 11 units (Villanova, Georgetown, Xavier, St. John's, Providence, Butler)
2016 - 12 units (Villanova, Xavier, Seton Hall, Providence, Butler)
2017 - 13 units (Villanova, Butler, Xavier, Providence, Seton Hall, Creighton, Marquette)
2018 - 13 units (Villanova, Xavier, Seton Hall, Providence, Butler, Creighton)
2019 - 5 units (Villanova, Marquette, Seton Hall, St. John's)
