Winning the NIT is great once you're relegated to the NIT. But getting to the NCAA Tournament is ALWAYS, 100% better than any NIT result.

Nothing is good about the NIT. I'm going to watch every game and yell at the TV as hard as I would for any other game, but that's because I love Xavier and in spite of it being the NIT.

I’d rather lose in the first round of the NIT than play in the PIG. It’s a disgraceful game that shouldn’t exist in the first place. Plus it’s at UD Arena, a place that shouldn’t exist in any place.

You're overthinking this dramatically, OP.
Winning is better than losing.
Continuing to play is better than being done.
Going to MSG again and lifting a trophy is better than a bus to Dayton and a sad ride home.
Think these people would rather have flown to Dayton and gone home as losers?

You understand the question assumes you've lost the play-in game. This isn't some scenario where you make the play-in game and then see what happens. You went to Dayton and lost to a really bad team. That's what happened. You're out before the tournament even really starts. People prefer this to playing and winning five games?

That's Penn State. The basketball program with 1 NCAA appearance between 2002-now (KenPom only goes back to 2002 and I'm too lazy to look anywhere else). I'd assume Xavier holds themselves to a higher standard than Penn State.
There's definitely an argument that, say, UNC Greensboro would rather win the NIT than lose in the play in game.. But I really think any school that has legitimate yearly Final Four expectations (which should be almost everyone in the Power 6) would rather have had the chance to play in the big dance.

That argument makes literally no sense. You have it exactly backwards. If PSU has made one NCAA in 17 years, then they'd presumably trade anything for the NCAA trip. And teams that are used to being in the NCAA, as Xavier thankfully is, should be willing to set aside a meaningless, losing, forgetful trip to Dayton for the unusual experience of winning the NIT title.

I'd rather see my name called Selection Sunday than win some consolation prize. There's a reason the NIT is referred to as "Not In Tournament." Better to have played in the NCAA and lost than never to have played in the NCAA at all. Talk about meaningless.
I wonder what Hankins, Welage or Castlin would rather do? I'm sure their thinking was they were coming for a chance to win the NIT instead of the chance to say you made the NCAA tournament.

100%. By all rights post-DePaul, this team was dead and buried. It's awesome and amazing that they managed to make it to this place. It just would have been MORE awesome and MORE amazing to have beaten Butler and/or Villanova yet still bow out to Belmont last night in Dayton.

No way Belmont is better than IU, let alone a lot better but that is beside the point. Beat the Hoosiers in a NIT Championship at MSG, or anywhere else for that matter, would send shock waves throughout Indiana/Ohio basketball wise. I am positive that would pay dividends on the recruiting trail. We tend to mine a lot of talent out of Indiana, so a BIG W over them would make our already successful recruiting there even better......plus it would really piss off their fan base, which is nice.

I appreciate the sarcasm but terrible example. UD doesn't have any chance of snagging a big time NC kid from UNC. We actively mine talent in Indiana. When recruiting in the Hoosier state any edge we get vs IU and BU is a good thing.
GoMuskies
03-20-2019, 11:34 AM
That's not going to gain us any edge. Hell, Romeo Langford isn't even playing. You know why? Because the NT is a glorified exhibition. And it's not really that glorified.
Better recruiting edge against IU: we play in the NCAA Tournament. IU plays in the NIT.

Seriously, I don't understand how this is even a debate? I went to Dayton to watch X lose miserably to NC State. I'll still feel much better about that season than I would about this year's team if the win the NIT.
And I don't mean to take anything away from what this team accomplished after the DePaul game, as Gomuskies said. It will be a very nice end to their season, but it wold've been more successful had they made the NCAA game in Dayton and lost. And I would wager that, to a man, our current roster would rather have made the NCAA than have to settle for an NIT championship.
But, hey, if we win that at least will mean we'll be Rob Gronkowski's favorite team, so we've got that going for us.

NIT Champ preferred to PIG Loser. I enjoy watching XU. So watching 4 extra games be AWESOME. At some point clips of our 1958 NIT Champs or honoring those still alive from that squad would seem to happen. Starting next season with an active winning streak is special. We couldn't get thru the 1st round of an 8 team tourney in November, so winning it all in a 32 team event is an achievement. If we win it all, I think others will come around to my way of thinkimg

I’d prefer NIT champ. I still feel like you’re not in the Big Dance until you’re in the field of 64. I also don’t think any conference champs should be in the PIG, even if it’s a huge upset.

Some may say we got screwed on a BS call in the BE tournament. So be it.
It's on to Austin. And then maybe back to Cintas.

I’m aware of the history of the NIT, but it is no longer anywhere close to the ncaa. In the ncaa, you make money for your basketball program and conference. Same cannot be said for the NIT.

Jealousy overfloweth? Maybe just a little hyperbole there? Just because we'd rather be in the NCAA than win the NIT does not mean we're not enjoying watching them play more basketball. I'd love to see them win it all.
However, I would rather be Crash Davis with the 21 glorious days in the majors than be Crash Davis with the home run record but never getting to the show. Because that's the goal of every player that suits up - it's to make the NCAA tourney. The NIT is a nice consolation prize, but it's just that - consolation.

I, agree as well. The winner of the NIT generally get some preseason respect the following year and will certainly be higher in the preseason rankings than who ever lost a game in the play in portion of the NCAA tournament. I would think that in terms of betterment for the team The Following season winning the NIT is far more beneficial than losing in the play-in game

Penn State received 0 votes in both preseason polls this year. First Four loser UCLA was #20 in one poll and #21 in another. First Four loser Arizona State got 3 votes in the AP Poll. Of the three, Penn State and UCLA sucked out loud, while ASU returned to the First Four and got a win this time.

Losing the PIG is an embarrassment. I'm not sure they should even be considered actually in the tournament. They should get back to the 'first round' being the first time all the teams play. PIG losers have not made the tournament and therefore do not constitute a round of tournament play. Its too damn confusing, esp for a UC grad.

The argument for expanding to 68 was that good teams were being left out of the tournament. Hasn't Arizona State vs. St. John's put that argument to rest? Let's go back to 64.

I'm be in favor of expansion only IF all regular season conference champions (assuming there is no tie) get an auto bid and the conference tournament winner gets an auto bid. If a Conference Tourney and Regular Season winner are the same that bid goes into the "at-large" pool. That's really the only way to do it with expansion. It rewards both the hot team and the consistent team.
