View Full Version : Walking vs. running

I have an observation from the last two games I saw in person. Wondering if anyone else has noticed this. When we were up on Villanova at Cintas and it looked like the game was in the bag, the Villanova players still ran everywhere. Onto the court, off the court, when substituted, off the court at halftime, back on the court. Even when losing they look energized.
I noticed at Butler the other night the same thing I've seen on multiple occasions; and you have to be in attendance to see this-the Xavier players, especially Jones and Goodin walk everywhere. They LOOK like they've just walked through the desert when they enter the game or leave. Even coming out for the opening tip. Sometimes it takes Jones (and I like Tyrique) a minute just to get off the court when substituted for. Could this approach be a precursor for a bigger problem and that's a slow careless approach to taking care of the ball? I played sports at a local Catholic high school and you never thought about walking ever. If fact you wanted to be the first in-out whatever.
This slow approach also creeps into Xavier's attempts to break full court pressure. Watch how slowly Marshall retrieves a made free throw and attempts to get the ball back in play, essentially allowing the opposition to fully set up their press with no hurry.
Anybody else see what I'm seeing? Even if you're tired, you can't let your opponent see it.

This is a 6 game losing streak take in the midst of a 1 game losing streak. I'm impressed.

I think it’s intentional. We don’t want to get stuck in an uptempo game, so we’re playing slow.

Man seeing these types of hot takes every time we lose is frustrating.

I was thinking that, sounds like some Moeller type pseudo masculinity.

I personally don't care for the way Kenny Frease slouches during the National Anthem. #throwback

I've never seen our student managers sprint around like the Dook student managers, and it really pisses me off. Probably cost us two or three wins this year.

I irrationally hate the fact the Duke managers do this - and I don't even hate Duke, really.

I hate you for not hating duke. And Frease should kneel straighter during the National Anthem. #throwback

What is wrong with playing in the GCL? Check on the number of OHIO State championships held by the GCL. Who has more?

Those that don’t hustle get a Walking Man jersey instead of Running Man!

Thanks gramps, now tell some kid to get off your lawn!!! #oldwhitemantake
Kidding aside, I haven't noticed what you describe. Theoretically, you want all of your players to hustle in, hustle out and show a sense of urgency. But as long as they aren't getting burned because of a lack of hustle, it's not an issue. I find it difficult to believe Coach Steele wouldn't address it. It is an interesting observation, but you may be looking too deep into this.

Maybe Coach told them to play slower since we don't exactly have a deep roster.
Maybe they understand that wasted energy is dumb.
Maybe they want to look around the arena and enjoy the sights.

It is a nice arena, especially with the resent upgrades. The cheer leaders are getting better looking all the time too.

These guys are cutting edge. The future is all about energy management. Time management is so 1980s.

I think there's a greater risk of injury with running. They could bump into another player, a referee, the kid wiping the floor. I applaud the walking. Think it's a great coaching decision if it's done by design.

Hey, the 80's also gave us REM, The Replacements, Husker Du, Aztec Camera, Killing Joke, The The, Oingo Boingo, just to name a few. It wasn't all that bad. :)

You lost me after REM, but that's probably more on me than anything else.

Personally, I like to walk on a treadmill with the incline up to 12 - 15 degrees over running. It really burns a ton of calories and is much easier on the knees.
What's that? This thread is about the players? During stoppages in play?

Moeller has won 4 state titles in the last 20 years and look like they're about to roll to a fifth. Also produced some great players including our all time leading scorer. seems like a good model
