Both squads in some throwback uniforms too, hopefully our guys can play a good clean, mistake free game. Agree with Paul's assessment, keep the turnovers down and we definitely could win this thing. Keep giving me irrational hope guys, I love it.

I like your style.

Please allow me to add one thought: may the God's throw a wet blanket on Nova's ability to hit from behind the arc tomorrow. May they remember what Nova seemingly did to us last year from there, and simply say "you shottith your waddith last year, you shall clankith against the rim in the Queen City this year."

Sorry, but I'm not up on my pagan God-speak. Let's go with something like that.

Gillespie must not be allowed to do what he did in Philly. His 6 of 10 from deep was the difference. He's cold of late (8 of 34). Got to be able to fight through those ball screens and hurry his shot. No reason a 6' non athletic, one dimensional guy should be able to burn us again.

Bad thing is I have been optimistic every time we play Nova and we always get crushed. Steele has been winning places though that
Mack struggled to so let’s continue that trend!

I never feel good about playing Villanova. They've struggled recently from three, and I can just see them coming into Cintas and draining 15 threes like they always do.

My checklist for beating Nova today:
- outrebound them
- get Paschall in foul trouble
- <12 threes for Nova
- <12 turnovers for X
- get at least 4 combined threes from Welly, Eli, Castlin,
- get Paul back on track

But yes agree we must keep them off the glass........minimize second chance points and shoot the ball better. Gotta make 35+% of 3's

D was wrapped in the “less than 12 threes” and the outrebounding. I don’t think we’ll force a crazy number of turnovers, so I think those are the two biggest defensive measurables.

Steele has already tied the winningest coach in Xavier history with wins at Providence and Seton Hall. With a win today he will tie another milestone in Mack’s career with 1 win against Nova. Steele in his first year is already making history. X isn’t losing till the sweet 16 bois. I may change my prediction at 3:30. Stay tuned.

Checklist to winning are meaningless after item #1 and that is score more points. After that it doesn’t matter what they do or how they do it. Turn the ball over 20x fetnout rebounded by 10. As long as you score more that’s all that matters. Go get em X

I think Nova sees baskets as wide as the flooded Ohio River when they play us. They might hit 3 straight 3s while we hit 3 straight 2s & you feel demoralized matching 2s against 3s. Our guys need to see that same flooded river with a good barrage if our own 3s

I see no effective movement, as if we were running a play, in our offense.

They may be long rebounds but the only reason they fall into the nova players hands is because our guys run toward the basket instead of getting their butt into the guys chest...its a basic rebounding fundamental.

Nova is halfway to 12 threes. I think if we keep them under that number it’ll bode well for the game. Need a couple set plays for Welly in the 2nd half, maybe a Paul 3 or 2. Open up the inside for Q, Naj, and the bigs. We’re right there and could have a lead if not for a couple extra TOs, like the shot clock violation.

Where was this Xavier team from the last 4 games the rest of the year ? With how terrible the bubble is this year this should have been an NCAA tournament team. The losses at home vs DePaul and Providence and that stupid road loss to terrible Missouri are going to keep this team out of the NCAA tournament.

If they had won those 3 games this team would be in with a win today.

- outrebound them
- get Paschall in foul trouble
- <12 threes for Nova
- <12 turnovers for X
- get at least 4 combined threes from Welly, Eli, Castlin,
- get Paul back on track

Rebounds tied.

Might have been mentioned but it’s worth pointing out again... Harden stepping up and hitting that corner was so pivotal. He also had another key 10 footer and a key assist. Everyone played really well, but it is such a great feeling to see him take that next big step. Agreed... But there was really something different about him today. For the first time, he looked like he felt he belonged. What I mean is... he wasn’t just a guy in there to give someone a breather (which he did)... or in there to hit a few threes (though he did that too)... or even to be a facilitator (had a few key assists as well)... Today he played like he was a starter... someone who was playing up to his original expectation.

He may have scored more points before, but he proved today that he can be the whole package and someone who teammates can count on. Someone who can hit 3s AND midrange jumpers when the team needs it, who will play tight defense and hustle after loose balls, Who can help with breaking the press and making good passes.

Steele's post-game conference said he thinks that the adversity made them a closer bunch and they trust each other more now, and I think he's right. He made adjustments on pick and roll defense and it's paying off big time. This is the type of defense I expected when Steele said we'd be better defensively. The guys are having fun, and starting to pick up some confidence in themselves. Look at the way Harden has come on strong, look at Q, Naji, Scruggs playing solid together. If they can continue the momentum like this, it's not that crazy to think they could win these next three out, gotta take it one game at a time, but my irrational hope is going through the roof.

X has potential to beat just about any BE team- Check

I honestly think Xavier is better than St. John's and Butler. Will be tough but I feel like this team can win out. Carnesecca will be a morgue at 6:30pm on a Thursday and X has played well at Hinkle lately.

Throwing away the PC and Seton Hall games at home really stings now though. Both those teams really suck (personally haven't bought in to either of SJU or SHU this year, 0% chance either wins a tourney game).

So excited and happy for the team and especially for Steele. Convinced now more than ever that this guy is going to be the one to get us that last 2%.

before I even scrolled to the bottom of this page was thinking the exact same thing. I think it's huge that Dwon was here for this one too. He's gotta be thinking he's made a really good choice right about now. Somebody posted there were 8-9 recruits in the house tonight. Wonder other than Odom and Carlson what other priority 2020 kids were there?I think Ramsey was there. He was posting videos on twitter

if we continue to play like this we roll Butler in Hinkle. That roster just isn't all that great, and we are their daddy. SJU is a very talented bunch, but we can beat them.

Remember, we beat DePaul when they were up by 6 with 4 min to go, beat Creighton, Seton Hall, and Butler with them getting the last shot to win, and beating G Town when they were up 19. It could be a LOT worse, we threaded the needle. Great game today and we now have a chance that was unimaginable 2 weeks ago.

During the pregame radio show Byron asked Steele a couple of questions....

Q......what’s the biggest change during this win streak? A.....the defensive is much better than it was earlier

Q.....X scored 75 points in the last Nova game, and lost. Will 75 points be enough to win this game? A.....Yes! Because our defense is so much better.

Coach called it!

Just watched the game. Film study on this will be fun. The pass from Q to Scruggs in the corner for the 3 that put them up 8 may be the play of the season for me. That’s next level stuff there and was placed perfectly. It’s in this recap (http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/game?gameId=401083361) too.

They played Georgetown at home on CBS two years ago.

There was another allegation of a regular season game played in New Jersey, but I cannot confirm that.

I cannot say if I was or was not at that game that may or may not have been played against a team that may or may not have been from the ACC.

There was a tall skinny kid with a yellow sweatshirt on that said Bardstown. Saw him down behind basket then also up in concourse. No idea who he was.

Can you imagine Cintas on 3/9 if we are still on the winning streak!!???

Was a pretty damn good pass from a guy not good enough to play PG at EKU.

Separately, I really think Paul Scruggs will leave Xavier a legend. Naji has obviously blown up the past few weeks, but damn Paul Scruggs is just really really good.

I agree.

There was a question in the post game press conference (with Q, Naji and Scruggs) posed to Naji about Establishing himself as the go to guy on the team. It reallly bothered. The team just finished a game where everyone was stepping up and making big plays and I felt that question showed disrespect to Q and Paul. He made it sound like it was a given- like it was a fact that everyone has already bought into. The truth is that Paul (and even Q) can be considered go to guys who are playing with confidence and making big shots. It’s almost like... “Hey you are the best player - tell us why that is? Just hated that question.

At least Naji handled it well and talked about how everyone is contributing.

This Entire team all deserves credit for coming together and playing better. Yes Naji deserves credit for His play and hit some big threes, but this whole team is stepping up and we need to give them all props.

Final thoughts: the running man is so much better than nova's throwbacks. TBF that holds true for almost any uniform ever worn, but still, good job, good effort nova

... I mean, Naji is our go to guy right now? I think everyone on the team would admit it as well. Just look at our win streak, and look at his numbers. In fact, while Scruggs has been the most reliable player all year, during this win streak, other than today, he hasn't played that well. True, without other players making big shots we'd likely not be on this streak, but no doubt Naji has been the guy during this turnaround.

The real reason for the victory..being on CBS just before they started the second half they had a half minute video of Fiona and her second birthday as well as cute videos since last year. Great defense, few turnovers and Fiona is a winning combination. Watching from Conn and a fan of Xavier and Fiona I was pleasantly surprised to see her featured on a national hoop game

Maybe they should wear the Running Man more often.

Looking over season stats today. Q is shooting 1% higher on FTs than Tyrique. Q is at 67% and Tyrique is at 66%. I can live with his ball security and 3pt% because both have gotten better and close to expectations for him, but man. For next year's sake, and perhaps the big east tournament run, and subsequent NCAA tournament run, he's gotta get that number to around 75%. Last season he shot 79%. (but freshman year he shot something under 60%).

YEah Q was money at the line last year it seemed like. So we know he can do better. Hopefully this winning streak as everyones confidence is going up that translates at the line some too.

Nice article in the Athletic about Harden and the game:

“I tell our guys at the very beginning of the season, ‘If you want to talk about playing time, then be ready for reality when you step into my office.’ The first thing I’m always going to point to is our Xavier Way. We keep track of every stat in practice, from missed shots to turnovers to fouls to drawing fouls, taking a charge, all that stuff. Impact in winning,” Steele said.

“He came up to my office – I’ll never forget – and he said, ‘Coach, how can I get on the floor? How can I gain your trust?’ I said, ‘Well, it starts at the defensive end. I’ve got to know you’re going to do our system.’”

I don't know if I'd do it every time, though. I know Seton Hall wears their throwbacks during Big East play and their modern unis for nonconference play, for example.

Villanova wore their throwbacks from the Sweet 16 onward during the tournament last season.

OK then. Let's start wearing them in the S16 this year.
